BACKGROUND: A "cannot intubate, cannot oxygenate (CICO)" situation is a life-threatening condition that requires emergent management to establish a route for oxygenation to prevent oxygen desaturation. In this paper, we describe airway management in a patient with an extended parotid tumor that invaded the airways during CICO using the endotracheal tube tip in the pharynx (TTIP) technique.
CASE SUMMARY: A 43-year-old man was diagnosed with parotid tumor for > 10 years. Computed tomography and nasopharyngeal fiberoptic examination revealed a substantial mass from the right parotid region with …

BACKGROUND: Parotidectomy in melanoma of the coronal scalp and face with clinically involved cervical lymph node metastasis is based on predicted cervical lymphatic drainage described by O'Brien.
METHODS: In total, 40 parotidectomies with en bloc therapeutic neck dissection were retrospectively analyzed.
RESULTS: Lymphatic spread of melanoma to the parotid lymph nodes was observed in 10 of 40 specimens (25%). Eight of the 10 parotid-positive patients developed a recurrence vs 17 of the 30 parotid-negative patients (P = 0.28). There were no differences in overall survival, melanoma-specific s

Most of the primary malignant lymphomas of the salivary glands originate from the parotid gland. We presented two patients who were admitted with a painless mass in the parotid region and diagnosed to have a lymphoma. Physical examination of a 66-year-old male patient showed a relatively mobile, painless, and firm mass at the inferior aspect of the right parotid gland. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed and a needle biopsy was obtained from the solid lesion extending from the right parotid superficial lobe to the medial deep lobe. Patholog…

To determine the presence of rabies virus in the parotid salivary glands, 12 road-killed rabies-positive hoary foxes (Pseudoalopex vetulus) were tested by using the fluorescent antibody test (FAT) and mouse inoculation test (MIT). All 12 parotid salivary glands were positive for both tests, although in some cases several passages were required. The findings of this study support the importance of the hoary fox as rabies reservoir in the sem-iarid region of Paraíba State, Northeastern Brazil.

The masticator space is a deep facial space with a complex anatomical structure. The purpose of the present study was to precisely define the masticator space to eliminate the use of obsolete and confusing terms to describe the area, and to illustrate the common mass syndromes. Primary tumors are uncommon, usually benign and of a vascular or neural origin. Adjacent lesions, mainly pharyngeal with secondary extension into the masticator space, are especially frequent. Metastases are rare, and infectious pathology is often odontogenic. The most frequent lesion of the masticator space is the odon

Intraparotid lipoma is a rare benign tumor of the parotid gland, accounting for less than 1% of all parotid tumors. Its slow growth and typically painless presentation often lead to delayed diagnosis, which relies primarily on imaging findings. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl presenting with a painless left cheek swelling, evolving since the age of five and causing progressive discomfort, without any associated clinical signs. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated the typical features of an intraparotid lipoma, including high signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images, com

BACKGROUND: Signet ring adenocarcinoma is a recently characterized entity occurring in the minor salivary glands. All reported cases have occurred in minor salivary gland. Pure signet ring adenocarcinoma of a major salivary gland has not been reported in the literature.
METHODS: A 38-year-old woman presented with a mass in the parotid region. Microscopy showed signet ring cells positive for mucicarmine. Immunohistochemistry showed cytokeratin and focal smooth muscle actin (SMA) positivity; an exhaustive search for primary elsewhere did not reveal any suspicious focus.
RESULTS: A diagnosis of…

RATIONALE: Autologous fat grafting is a widely used technique for facial contour restoration and is generally considered safe. Nevertheless, delayed inflammatory reactions may occur and, in rare instances, require surgical intervention. Excision of the inflamed graft in the midface region carries a potential risk of intraoperative injury to critical structures, including the facial nerve and parotid gland.
PATIENT CONCERNS: 24-year-old woman presented with progressive swelling and tenderness of the left cheek 4 years after autologous facial fat grafting.
DIAGNOSIS: Magnetic resonance imaging

BACKGROUND: When a firm facial mass in the cheek region is associated with a high index of clinical suspicion of its being of parotid gland origin, preventive parotidectomy is invariably performed. We report a rare case of a schwannoma that was suspected to be of parotid gland origin in a patient, who underwent successful surgical management using a modified-Blair incision and superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) layer folding method.
CASE SUMMARY: A 27-year-old woman presented to the hospital for evaluation of a firm, fixed, non-tender mass (2.5 cm × 3.5 cm), located anterior to the

Myoepithelioma is an extremely rare benign tumor of the salivary glands that poses a diagnostic challenge because its clinical, radiologic, and cytopathologic characteristics may resemble those of several other salivary gland tumors. Accessory parotid myoepithelioma is even rarer. A 24-year-old female patient presented with a five-year history of a gradually increasing, painless swelling in the right mid-cheek region. Clinical examination revealed a firm, well-demarcated, nontender swelling in the right mid-cheek region without evidence of facial nerve involvement. Ultrasonographic evaluation
