This study characterizes the pathological findings in Atlantic Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) chicks from the Canary Islands associated with illegal hunting cases. A retrospective analysis of necropsy archives, including imaging techniques (X-rays and computed tomography) and histopathological examinations, was conducted on twenty juvenile shearwaters. The study revealed significant cranioencephalic trauma as the primary cause of death in both poaching events. Differences in the methods used by the perpetrators were noted, with variations in skull fractures and associated injuries. T

Aprosencephaly is a rare condition in veterinary and human medicine characterized by the complete absence of telencephalon and diencephalon. Some cases are accompanied by a facial dysmorphism designated as otocephaly. A stillborn lamb had splanchnocranial anomalies that were classified by computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and pathologic examination as aprosencephaly and otocephaly. The brain included parts of the cerebellum and brainstem but no telencephalon, diencephalon, or mesencephalon. The cerebellum had a structurally normal cortex with expression of neuronal nuclear antig

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Hoof lamellar pathology in horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) has not been described previously.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the histomorphometry and pathological lesions in hoof lamellar tissue of animals that had PPID with or without concurrent laminitis, with reference to age-matched controls. We hypothesised that lamellar lesions consistent with laminitis would be associated with PPID, even in animals without current or historical laminitis.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case-control study.
METHODS: Mid-dorsal hoof histological sections were o

Candidiasis is a fungal disease caused by Candida albicans or other members of the genus Candida. Descriptions of candidiasis are comparatively reduced in veterinary relative to human medicine, with no cases of mammary candidiasis being identified in pet animals. This report presents the cytological, pathological, and molecular findings of mammary candidiasis with embolic dissemination in a postpartum dog. A 1-year-old, female Shih-tzu dog that had recently given birth was admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital in Southern Brazil after repeated episodes of intermittent mammary disease and

Alternative therapies that can help achieve complete remission in dogs with lymphoma include total body irradiation and hematopoietic cell transplant, though there are few reports describing successes and pathologic sequelae of these procedures. During a 10-year period, 94 dogs with multicentric lymphoma received a hematopoietic cell transplant following total body irradiation at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Seven of these 94 dogs (7%) died prior to discharge, five (5%) of which presented for postmortem examination. Of these dogs, four received an autologous

Pathologic lesions of the orbitozygomaticomaxillary complex (OZMC) and caudal oral cavity can be a challenge in veterinary oromaxillofacial surgery. Neoplastic lesions that are in close proximity to or invading the orbit may result in significant loss of structural integrity after curative intent surgery. This in turn may alter the topography of the bulbous oculi (globe) with resultant enophthalmos, diplopia, and entropion. Historically, orbital exenterations have been deemed a suitable option to avoid these complications. However, lesions that do not include the globe in the surgical margin m

Toxoplasma gondii is an intensely studied protozoan parasite. It is also used as a model organism to research additional clinically relevant human and veterinary parasites due to ease of in vitro culture and genetic manipulation. Recently, it has been developed as a model of inflammatory bowel disease, due to their similar pathologies. However, researchers vary widely in how they use T. gondii, which makes study comparisons and interpretation difficult. The aim of this review is to provide researchers with a tool to: (i) determine the appropriateness of the different T. gondii models to their

Two wild adult Nubian ibex (Capra nubiana) were captured and admitted to the Hebrew University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with various neurologic signs, including alerted mentation, head tilt, and pathologic nystagmus. The lesion in the central nervous system was localized to the forebrain in one ibex and to the cerebellum of the other. Both ibex's were diagnosed with brain cyst using computed tomography (CT). Craniectomy was performed to remove the cysts, and both animals returned to their natural environment after a rehabilitation period. Parasitologic examination revealed cysts of Taenia

Case records of 36 dogs with confirmed leptospirosis diagnosed at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine from 1980 to 1995 were reviewed retrospectively, and clinical, serological and pathological findings were recorded to characterise the epidemiology of this disease in upstate New York. Titres were directed predominantly against serovars grippotyphosa and/or pomona in 31 of 34 dogs. Convalescent titres were measured for 53 per cent of dogs. The most common clinical presentation was acute renal failure. Increased liver enzyme activity was documented in 22 of 36 dogs. It is clear fr

Since World War II, the military has experienced outbreaks of Q fever among deploying units including recent case reports of Q fever in US military personnel returning from serving in the Middle East during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. Occupational exposure and prevalence of Q fever among US Army Veterinary Corps officers have not been examined. A retrospective serosurvey and observational study of 500 military veterinarians were conducted using archived serum specimens from military veterinarians who entered and served between 1989 and 2008 and were tested for expos

Hip dysplasia (HD) is an arthropathy with an incompletely understood pathophysiology. Existing induction HD models fall short of providing feasible data to test new therapeutic strategies. This study aimed to characterize and validate a new surgical model of HD in rabbits. Seventeen 6-week-old male New Zealand white rabbits were randomly assigned to 3 groups: GI (n = 3) - control group, with six normal hips (NH); GII (n = 7) - seven left instability surgery hips (ISH) and seven right surgery sham hips (SSH); GIII (n = 7) - seven left instability surgery hips, followed by hindlimb bandage immob

Clinical and pathological diagnoses were compared in a prospective study of 145 dogs. A diagnostic work up had been performed on all dogs of which 36 (24.8%) died and 109 (75.2%) were euthanatized. In 119 dogs (82.1%) both a clinical and patholical diagnosis was made, in 20 dogs (13.8%) no pathological diagnosis could be made and in 6 dogs (4.1%) no clinical diagnosis was established. In the 119 dogs the agreement level between clinical and pathological diagnosis was scored by the referring veterinarian together with a pathologist. Total agreement was found in 61 cases (51.3%) and disagreement
