The FOOTSTEP self-management foot care programme: are rheumatoid arthritis patients physically able to participate?

BACKGROUND: The FOOTSTEP self-management foot care programme is a clinical and cost-effective programme for basic foot care in the elderly. The aim of this study was to determine if patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) would be physically able to participate. METHODS: A consecutive cohort of RA patients undergoing podiatry care underwent tests for sight, reach and grip strength to determine their physical ability to undertake self-managed foot care. RESULTS: Thirty RA patients (10 male, 20 female), with a median age of 61 years (range 42 to 84) and disease duration of 10 years (range one

[Evaluation of an online discussion forum for depressive patients and their relatives--an examination focussing motives and effects of participation].

OBJECTIVE: The profile of psychiatric patients, who write within the online discussion forum of the German Research Network on Depression and Suicidality, is described. The question of which diagnoses are predominant among the forum members and the question of their treatment status shall be answered. Furthermore, the effects of participation in the forum on individual handling of the illness are examined. METHODS: 55 active users were interviewed by telephone using a computer-assisted version of a fully structured psychiatric interview (DIA-X) and online with the Beck Depression Inventory (B

Recruitment and retention of palliative cancer patients and their partners participating in a longitudinal evaluation of a psychosocial retreat program.

OBJECTIVE: The negative impact of a palliative cancer diagnosis on the quality of life of patients and their partners is well documented. Unfortunately, research on interventions to improve psychological and spiritual well-being of these couples has been considered impractical because of the deleterious influence of disease progression on participation. This study evaluated the feasibility of offering the Tapestry Retreat, an intensive psychosocial intervention for palliative care patients and their partners. METHODS: Participants in the Tapestry Retreat included 15 patients with advanced bre

Disclosure of genetics research results after the death of the patient participant: a qualitative study of the impact on relatives.

When a gene mutation is identified in a research study following the death of the study participant, it is not clear whether such information should be made available to relatives. We report here an evaluation of the impact on relatives of being informed of study results that detected pathogenic BRCA2 mutations in a male relative, now deceased, who had early onset (under the age of 55) prostate cancer. The breast and ovarian cancer risk was unknown to the living relatives. Qualitative analysis of interviews with thirteen relatives indicated that those who had a higher risk perception, resultin

Calcium metabolism in elderly hypertensive patients: possible participation of exaggerated sodium, calcium and phosphate excretion.

1. Renal handling of electrolytes, including calcium (Ca), in response to physiological saline infusion (20 mL/kg, i.v., for 2 h) as well as basal circulating levels of Ca-regulating hormones were compared in 27 hypertensive elderly females (mean age 80 +/- 9 years), in 44 normotensive elderly females (79 +/- 9 years) and in 19 young normotensive females (23 +/- 4 years). 2. The hypertensive elderly females showed excessive increase in urine volume and urinary excretions of sodium (Na), Ca and inorganic phosphate (P) in response to saline infusion, associated with slight but significant decrea

Attitudes and Willingness to Participate in Drug Clinical Trials Among Patients With Cancer: Multistage Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Cancer clinical trials are essential for advancing therapeutic innovations; however, patient enrollment remains a persistent challenge globally. Understanding the attitudes and willingness of patients with cancer to participate in clinical trials is critical for improving recruitment strategies. While previous studies have explored barriers and facilitators, few have integrated multiple data sources or used emerging analytical approaches, such as large language models (LLMs), to capture the multidimensional nature of patient decision-making. Furthermore, limited research has examin

Exploring the pivotal variables of tongue diagnosis between patients with chronic kidney disease and health participants.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a significant global health problem associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) utilizes tongue diagnosis to differentiate symptoms and predict prognosis. This study examines the relationship between tongue characteristics and CKD severity using an automatic tongue diagnosis system (ATDS), which captures tongue images non-invasively to provide objective diagnostic information. METHODS: This cross-sectional, case-control study was conducted from July 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. Participants were divided

Potential Barriers to Participating in Cancer Moonshot Biobank for Low-Income Patients with Cancer of Rural Maine.

Background: The National Cancer Institute's Cancer Moonshot Biobank (CMB) aims to accelerate research on tumor sensitivity and resistance to standard-of-care therapies through collection and distribution of longitudinal biospecimens donated by research participants with cancer. Since low participation among historically underserved populations limits the generalizability of research done with biospecimens, CMB supports local community engagement activities. Objectives: We assessed the factors for enrollment in CMB and related precision oncology trials among rural, low-income adults with cancer

Core Outcome Measure for Life Participation in Patients with CKD: Standardized Outcomes in Nephrology Workshops Report.

KEY POINTS: Patients, caregivers, and health professionals support the use of standardised outcomes in nephrology - life participation as the core outcome measure for life participation in patients with CKD. Further work is needed to pilot and validate the standardised outcomes in nephrology - life participation measure in patients with CKD before the need for KRT. A core outcome measure will support consistent reporting of life participation in trials in patients with CKD. BACKGROUND: Life participation is of critical importance to patients with CKD not requiring KRT, their caregivers, and h

Sports Participation in Patients With Hip Dysplasia Before and Up to 20 Years After Periacetabular Osteotomy.

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic hip dysplasia in skeletally mature, young patients is often treated with periacetabular osteotomy (PAO). While studies have focused on radiographic and pain-related outcomes, evidence on sports participation is limited. PURPOSE: To determine the proportion of patients who (1) participate in sports, (2) perform their preferred sports, and (3) report improved sports performance after PAO and to investigate if preoperative patient characteristics could predict these outcomes during the first 5 years after PAO. STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. METHODS: T

Simulated Patient as a Learner: Medical Volunteers Gain Knowledge by Participating in a Wilderness Medicine Training Session.

IntroductionA multifaceted approach to wilderness medicine education and training is necessary to provide a high-quality learning experience, often requiring innovative instructional techniques. Using volunteers to act as patients in medical education is a well-established practice that helps teach crucial skills. However, more is needed to know if there is potential knowledge acquisition through participation. This study examined the educational benefits for medical students serving as a simulated patient (SP), hypothesizing that these individuals will improve self-assessed knowledge and conf

Participation of Arterial Ischemia in Positional-Related Symptoms among Patients Referred for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome.

Objectives: The coexistence of arterial compression with neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) is associated with a better post-surgical outcome. Forearm transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcpO2) using the minimal decrease from rest of oxygen pressure (DROPmin) can provide an objective estimation of forearm ischemia in TOS. We hypothesized that a linear relationship exists between the prevalence of symptoms (PREVs) and DROPmin during 90° abduction external rotation (AER) provocative maneuvers. Thereafter, we aimed to estimate the proportion of TOS for which arterial participation is present.

Evaluating patient perspectives on participating in scientific research and clinical trials for the treatment of spinal cord injury.

A questionnaire was developed to evaluate patients' perspective on research aimed at improving functions and overcoming complications associated with spinal cord injury (SCI). The first three sections were based on published and validated assessment tools. The final section was developed to assess participant perspectives on research for SCI. One thousand patients were approached, of which 159 participated. Fifty-eight percent of participants were satisfied with their 'life as a whole'. Two factors could be generated that reflected the variance in the data regarding participants' life with a S

Asphyxia at birth affects brain structure in patients on the schizophrenia-bipolar disorder spectrum and healthy participants.

BACKGROUND: Uncertainty exists about what causes brain structure alterations associated with schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorder (BD). Whether a history of asphyxia-related obstetric complication (ASP) - a common but harmful condition for neural tissue - contributes to variations in adult brain structure is unclear. We investigated ASP and its relationship to intracranial (ICV), global brain volumes and regional cortical and subcortical structures. METHODS: A total of 311 patients on the SZ - BD spectrum and 218 healthy control (HC) participants underwent structural magnetic resonance ima
