The role of motion and number of element locations in mirror symmetry perception.

The human visual system has specialised mechanisms for encoding mirror-symmetry and for detecting symmetric motion-directions for objects that loom or recede from the observers. The contribution of motion to mirror-symmetry perception has never been investigated. Here we examine symmetry detection thresholds for stationary (static and dynamic flicker) and symmetrically moving patterns (inwards, outwards, random directions) with and without positional symmetry. We also measured motion detection and direction-discrimination thresholds for horizontal (left, right) and symmetrically moving pattern

Selective scene perception deficits in a case of topographical disorientation.

Topographical disorientation (TD) is a neuropsychological condition characterized by an inability to find one's way, even in familiar environments. One common contributing cause of TD is landmark agnosia, a visual recognition impairment specific to scenes and landmarks. Although many cases of TD with landmark agnosia have been documented, little is known about the perceptual mechanisms which lead to selective deficits in recognizing scenes. In the present study, we test LH, a man who exhibits TD and landmark agnosia, on measures of scene perception that require selectively attending to either

Illusory feature slowing: evidence for perceptual models of global facial change.

Upright static faces are widely thought to recruit holistic representations, whereby individual features are integrated into nondecomposable wholes for recognition and interpretation. In contrast, little is known about the perceptual integration of dynamic features when viewing moving faces. People are frequently exposed to correlated eye and mouth movements, such as the characteristic changes that accompany facial emotion, yawning, sneezing, and laughter. However, it is unclear whether the visual system is sensitive to these dynamic regularities, encoding facial behavior relative to a set of

Are dyslexic children sensitive to the morphological structure of words when they read? The case of dyslexic readers of French.

Typically, research has cited a deficient use of word recognition procedures mainly caused by a phonological deficit as the source of dyslexic students' reading difficulties. However, recent studies have shown that morphological processing also plays an important part in reading. In the present study, sensitivity to the morphological structure of words was assessed with a plausibility judgment task, where participants determined which of two pseudo-words most resembled a real word in French, and with a decomposition task requiring participants to extract the base forms of morphologically compl

Evolutionary constraints on visual cortex architecture from the dynamics of hallucinations.

In the cat or primate primary visual cortex (V1), normal vision corresponds to a state where neural excitation patterns are driven by external visual stimuli. A spectacular failure mode of V1 occurs when such patterns are overwhelmed by spontaneously generated spatially self-organized patterns of neural excitation. These are experienced as geometric visual hallucinations. The problem of identifying the mechanisms by which V1 avoids this failure is made acute by recent advances in the statistical mechanics of pattern formation, which suggest that the hallucinatory state should be very robust. Visual agnosia for line drawings and silhouettes without apparent impairment of real-object recognition: a case report.

We report on a patient with visual agnosia for line drawings and silhouette pictures following cerebral infarction in the region of the right posterior cerebral artery. The patient retained the ability to recognize real objects and their photographs, and could precisely copy line drawings of objects that she could not name. This case report highlights the importance of clinicians and researchers paying special attention to avoid overlooking agnosia in such cases. The factors that lead to problems in the identification of stimuli other than real objects in agnosic cases are discussed.

When does the brain register deviances from standard word spellings?--An ERP study.

Event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to the standard form of words (e.g., taxi) were compared with ERPs in response to letter-altered (e.g., taksi) or case-altered forms (e.g., taXi). The altered forms always resulted in the same reading as the standard forms. First divergences between ERPs were found at around 160 ms. At occipital sites, the peak amplitude of the N160 was higher for standard than letter-altered strings. At frontal and central sites, the standard strings diverged from the altered strings persistently by higher positivity from about 160 ms onwards. These early ERP differ

Spatiotemporal characteristics of dynamic feature binding in visual working memory.

It has been proposed that visual working memory can hold a set of four to five coherent object representations. As a test of this proposal, I devised a paradigm called multiple object permanence tracking (MOPT) that measures memory for feature-location binding in dynamic situations. Observers were asked to detect any feature switch in the middle of a regular rotation of a pattern with multiple objects behind an occluder. The feature switch detection performance dramatically declined as the pattern rotation velocity increased. The behavioral evidence for the use of multiple color-shape conjunct

Lambda response by orientation of striped patterns.

A lambda response is an averaged occipital EEG potential associated with the offsets of saccadic eye movements. In the present experiment, two participants were asked to make horizontal saccades across horizontal or vertical white-black stripes. Analysis of orientations of striped patterns showed horizontal saccades across vertical stripes produced larger amplitudes of the lambda response than did horizontal saccades across horizontal stripes. Therefore, when the lambda response is used as the index of mental workload, it is necessary to take notice of the orientation of stimulus pattern.

Misdirected visual motion in the peripheral visual field.

An object moving against a textured background is accurately perceived when viewed foveally, but when viewed peripherally the object's perceived direction of motion may deviate from veridical by as much as 90 deg. The illusory direction is oblique to the orientation of the background contours, which may themselves be moving or stationary. In several experiments, we examined the boundary conditions for occurrence of the illusion and tested hypotheses concerning its basis. This illusion of perceived direction dramatizes differences in motion processing between the fovea and the periphery.

Electrophysiological evidence for visual-vestibular interaction in man.

The aim of the experiments reported here was to confirm electrophysiologically the results of psychophysical experiments, which demonstrated that thresholds for object-motion detection are significantly raised during both concurrent active or passive sinusoidal head oscillations and during visually induced self-motion perception (circularvection, CV). This intersensory inhibition could now be demonstrated electrophysiologically by recording visual motion evoked potentials both during concurrent sinusoidal head oscillations and during visually induced apparent self-motion of the objectively sta

Contrast sensitivity and pattern ERG in Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia.

Patients with Waldenstrom's macroglobulinaemia (WM) and age matched controls have been examined using tests of contrast sensitivity and pattern electroretinography. The patients with WM were in remission on maintenance treatment and had only moderately elevated plasma viscosity. They showed evidence of abnormal contrast sensitivity but there was no significant difference in amplitude of the pattern ERG between patients and controls.

Why have multiple cortical areas?

Image processing requires free access to information about all parts of an image, but a nerve cell in V1 can only interact directly with a tiny fraction of the other cells in V1. The problem this poses might be alleviated by forming secondary "neural images" in which information is re-arranged, and some possible rules of projection for forming such images are explored. It is also suggested that all parts of the cerebral cortex detect, and subsequently signal, suspicious coincidences in their inputs. Acquiring knowledge of the associative structure of sensory messages, in the form of the unexpe

Two spatio-temporal filters in human vision. 2. Selective modification in amblyopia, albinism, and hemianopia.

We have used the psychophysical methods described in the first paper of this series (Holliday and Ruddock, 1983) to determine selected spatial and temporal response characteristics of the ST1 and ST2 filters for subjects suffering visual defects. Data are given for 19 amblyopes, an albino and a hemianope, and comparison data are also given for a number of subjects with normal vision. The ST1 spatial responses for both the "normal" and "amblyopic" eyes of 12 convergent strabismic amblyopes are displaced to low spatial frequencies compared to the normal curve, which implies that there is a loss

Neural Mechanism of Noise Affecting Face Recognition.

Face recognition is one of the most important cognitive functions for humans in social activities. The ability will be negatively affected when the face images deteriorate. However, the neural process of extracting facial information under challenging conditions is still poorly understood. Therefore, it is necessary to further understand the neurophysiological relevance of this effect. We examined patients with multiple subdural electrodes (ECoG) monitored for clinical purposes. During the experimental task, the patients were presented with face and house images with different noise levels and

Visual search errors are persistent in a laboratory analog of the incidental finding problem.

When radiologists search for a specific target (e.g., lung cancer), they are also asked to report any other clinically significant "incidental findings" (e.g., pneumonia). These incidental findings are missed at an undesirably high rate. In an effort to understand and reduce these errors, Wolfe et al. (Cognitive Research: Principles and Implications 2:35, 2017) developed "mixed hybrid search" as a model system for incidental findings. In this task, non-expert observers memorize six targets: half of these targets are specific images (analogous to the suspected diagnosis in the clinical task). T

A Cross-Modal Working Memory Binding Span Deficit in Reading Disability.

Successful reading demands the ability to combine visual-phonological information into a single representation and is associated with an efficient short-term memory. Reading disability may consequently involve an impaired working memory binding of visual and phonological information. The present study proposes two span tasks for assessing visual-phonological working memory binding. The tasks involved memorizing cross-modal associations between nonsense figures and nonwords, and they were administered, with other working memory measures, to children with and without a reading disability. The ta

Remembering faces and scenes: The mixed-category advantage in visual working memory.

We examined the mixed-category memory advantage for faces and scenes to determine how domain-specific cortical resources constrain visual working memory. Consistent with previous findings, visual working memory for a display of 2 faces and 2 scenes was better than that for a display of 4 faces or 4 scenes. This pattern was unaffected by manipulations of encoding duration. However, the mixed-category advantage was carried solely by faces: Memory for scenes was not better when scenes were encoded with faces rather than with other scenes. The asymmetry between faces and scenes was found when item

Pinpointing the neural signatures of single-exposure visual recognition memory.

Memories of the images that we have seen are thought to be reflected in the reduction of neural responses in high-level visual areas such as inferotemporal (IT) cortex, a phenomenon known as repetition suppression (RS). We challenged this hypothesis with a task that required rhesus monkeys to report whether images were novel or repeated while ignoring variations in contrast, a stimulus attribute that is also known to modulate the overall IT response. The monkeys' behavior was largely contrast invariant, contrary to the predictions of an RS-inspired decoder, which could not distinguish response

What the study of voice recognition in normal subjects and brain-damaged patients tells us about models of familiar people recognition.

In recent years it has been shown that a disorder in recognizing familiar people can be observed in patients with lesions affecting the anterior parts of the temporal lobes and that these disorders can be multi-modal, simultaneously affecting the visual, auditory and linguistic channels that allow person identification. Several authors have also shown that patients with right anterior temporal atrophy are more impaired in assessing familiarity and in retrieving person-specific semantic information from faces than from names, whereas the opposite pattern of performance can be observed in patien
