OBJECTIVES: The etiopathogenesis of Peyronie's disease (PD) remains not clearly understood. The most accepted theory attributes the histological lesions of PD to the effects of trauma to the corpora cavernosum of the penis. The aim of our study is to verify whether similar histological features exist between these two tissues, providing new evidence in favor of the traumatic theory in the etiopathogenesis of Peyronie's disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective observational study was carried out at our institution from January 2013 to June 2018, involving patients having undergone surgery

INTRODUCTION: Peyronie's disease (PD) has historically been managed by at least 1 treatment, including oral supplements or medications, intralesional injections, or surgery. Adjunctive mechanical therapies also have been described, including penile traction therapy (PTT) and vacuum erection devices (VEDs), although relatively limited data are available on their use with PD.
AIM: To review and summarize the published literature on the role and efficacy of PTT and VED in men with PD.
METHODS: A PubMed search was performed of all publications on PTT and VED in men with PD from inception through

Peyronie's disease (PD) is a poorly understood clinical entity. We performed an in-depth analysis of the knowledge base and current practice patterns of urologists in the United States. A 46-question instrument was created by two experienced PD practitioners and emailed to current American Urology Association members nationally. Questions were either multiple-choice or used a visual analogue scale. Responses regarding treatment options were answered by ranking a list of utilized therapies by preference. Data were aggregated and mean values for each category compiled. Responses were received fr

Peyronie's disease is a benign disorder of the penis but the etiology is still unknown. A wound healing disorder after repetitive microtraumatic lesions with inelastic scar formation of the tunica albuginea potentially leads to the typical symptoms of penile plaque formation, penile pain, deviation and erectile dysfunction. A non-surgical therapy based on a clear pathophysiology does not exist although the benefit of several conservative treatment options is under discussion. In the stable stage of the disease patients with Peyronie's disease frequently undergo penile surgery. Depending on the

We can look at tissue injury as if a picket fence were damaged by the process of trauma. A fetus has the capability to repair the fence so that it is almost identical to what it was before the injury. In contrast, in adults the wound healing response can normally put the fence back together so that it is still functional, although its appearance may not be optimal. In the case of a hypertrophic scar too many pickets have been replaced in the fence, and neither the function nor the appearance is optimal. Perhaps when we understand the process by which the fetus heals and hypertrophic scars over

Between 1969 and 1984, a group of 54 patients with plastic induration of the penis was treated at the Medical Radiation Institute of the University of Tübingen. During the first years conventional X-ray irradiation was applied, and since 1974 patients were submitted to 3 or 5 MeV electron irradiation of a linear accelerator, until a total focal dose of 20 Gy was accumulated. 78% of these patients were between 50 and 60 years old. Sixteen patients suffered from a simultaneous Dupuytren contracture, one patient had a fibrosis of mamma virilis. The treatment results reached from satisfactory unti

Induratio penis plastica (or Peyronie's disease) is a rather rare malady, probably caused by chronic inflammation or recurrent microtrauma. The most common complaints are pain on erection and difficulties in performing sexual intercourse. Conservative treatment having been rather disappointing until now, infiltration with superoxide dismutase (Orgotein) seems to be an important advance. In more than one half of the patients positive effects concerning pain, deviation of the penis and extension of the plaques have been achieved. If after two years of conservative therapy there is no improvement

The cause of Peyronie's disease remains obscure. Reports based upon limited data reach conclusions that remain unverified. Leads are needed. Can available information open avenues for further studies? From reports in the literature and from observations in the laboratory and on patients, it is probably that two factors are involved; one, an inherent tendency to abnormal production of fibrous tissue; the other, mechanical stresses which stimulate and direct location of deposit. The fibrous tissue production appears to be an individual diathesis, from systemic factors yet undefined. Mechanical s
