A quasi-free-field technique was used to assess the effects of extra-high-frequency-band masking on detection threshold of middle and high (1-7 kHz) frequencies. At an SPL of 60 dB, the 10- to 20-kHz masker produced a slight amount of masking. Increasing the masking level by another 5 dB produced a disproportionate increase of the detection thresholds. This increase was greatest in response to 4- and 5-kHz stimuli, and was detected with both constant and pulsed tones. Decreasing the bandwidth of the masker reduced the magnitude of the effect, but not the frequency-specific pattern of the remot

The processing of spatial and temporal detail was investigated in patients with multiple sclerosis. Normal observers and 13 patients with optic neuritis secondary to multiple sclerosis performed a battery of visual tests that included contrast sensitivity, temporal integration, evoked potentials, and visual masking. The multiple sclerosis patients exhibited losses of pattern processing, and these deficits became more noticeable when the patterns were presented briefly. Moreover, these patients exhibited diverse response patterns for the different visual tests. For some, temporal integration fu

Thresholds for 2-kHz sinusoidal signals were determined in the presence of a notched-noise masker, for six normal-hearing listeners and 12 listeners with cochlear hearing losses. Following Patterson and Nimmo Smith [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 67, 229-245 (1980)], conditions were used where the notch was placed both symmetrically and asymmetrically about the signal frequency. The auditory filter shape for both the low- and high-frequency side of the filter was calculated using the rounded-exponential form of the filter. In six hearing-impaired listeners, the auditory filter shape showed a shallow low-

Remote masking (RM) consists of a rise of the threshold for low-pitched tones when the ear is exposed to a high-frequency noise band delivered with high intensity. This phenomenon has been attributed to mechanical non-linear distortion of the cochlear partition, as an effect of the envelope of a non-uniform signal. The authors studied RM in patients suffering from unilateral Menière's disorder, acoustic neuromata, other sensorineural lesions and presbyacusis. The behaviour of RM in the different experimental groups shows that the RM value is normal in acoustic neuromata; it is variable and not

1. Cats were trained, using an operant procedure, to detect and respond to electrical stimulation delivered in the vicinity of the cochlear nucleus. The electrical stimuli were presented both in silence and in synchrony with repeated noise bursts to determine whether detection thresholds for the electrical stimuli were elevated by the acoustic masking noise. 2. For stimulation sites centered within auditory structures (cochlear nucleus or acoustic nerve root), the acoustic maskers caused a consistent elevation of the electrical detection thresholds. For stimulation sites that were in or border

Most everyday behaviors and laboratory tasks rely on visual, auditory and/or motor-related processes. Yet, to date, there has been no large-scale quantitative synthesis of functional neuroimaging studies mapping the brain regions consistently recruited during such perceptuo-motor processing. We therefore performed three coordinate-based meta-analyses, sampling the results of neuroimaging experiments on visual (n = 114), auditory (n = 122), or motor-related (n = 251) processing, respectively, from the BrainMap database. Our analyses yielded both regions known to be recruited for basic perceptua

OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of the longterm-use of surgical face mask (SFM) on acoustic and auditory-perceptual voice parameters in normophonic subjects without any known risk factor related to voice disorders.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Of 73 normophonic subjects who were previously included in a couple of studies before the COVID-19 outbreak, 25 people (18 female and 7 male) who were free of any known risk factor related to voice disorders during the outbreak were re-evaluated to assess the long-term effect of SFM on voice by using acoustic (mean F0, Jitter-local, Shimmer-local, Cepstral

In amblyopia, abnormal visual experience leads to an extreme form of eye dominance, in which vision through the nondominant eye is degraded. A key aspect of this disorder is perceptual suppression: the image seen by the stronger eye often dominates during binocular viewing, blocking the image of the weaker eye from reaching awareness. Interocular suppression is the focus of ongoing work aimed at understanding and treating amblyopia, yet its physiological basis remains unknown. We measured binocular interactions in visual cortex of anesthetized amblyopic monkeys (female Macaca nemestrina), usin

This paper presents a summary of the main results of our current research programme on the speech-reception threshold for sentences as a function of the sound-pressure level of interfering noise. The experimental results agree with a simple quantitative model in which every hearing loss for speech is interpreted as the sum of a class-A loss (attenuation), characterized by a reduction in the levels of both speech signal and noise, and a class-D loss (distortion), comparable to a reduction in S/N ratio. The experiments confirm the model's prediction that a hearing aid can compensate for class-A

Early detection of dental caries in pediatric populations remains challenging due to limited annotated datasets and the subtle manifestation of incipient lesions. This study introduces Pulp-Caries-GAN, a novel generative adversarial network incorporating a biomimetic optimization strategy for high-fidelity synthetic dental image generation. The framework integrates a multi-loss architecture combining adversarial, pixel-wise, perceptual, and structural similarity losses with a pulp-inspired metaheuristic function that models neurophysiological dynamics of dental pulp tissue to preserve anatomic

INTRODUCTION: Speech perception in adverse listening environments depends not only on the quality of the acoustic signal but also on listeners' ability to recruit higher-level linguistic information. Although semantic constraints are known to influence recognition of syntactically complex speech, it remains unclear how informational masking, in which competing speech interferes with target-speech processing beyond peripheral acoustic overlap, influences the use of these cues during spoken sentence processing. The present study examined the effects of animacy-based semantic constraints on recog

OBJECTIVES: Musicians face an increased risk of hearing loss due to prolonged and repetitive exposure to high-noise levels. Detecting early signs of hearing loss, which are subtle and often elusive to traditional clinical tests like pure-tone audiometry, is essential. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of noise exposure on the electrophysiological and perceptual aspects of subclinical hearing damage in young musicians with normal audiometric thresholds.
DESIGN: The study included 33 musicians and 33 nonmusicians, all aged between 21 and 35 years, with normal audiometric

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the commonest cause of disability in under-40-year-olds. Vestibular features of dizziness (illusory self-motion) or imbalance which affects 50% of TBI patients at 5 years, increases unemployment threefold in TBI survivors. Unfortunately, vestibular diagnoses are cryptogenic in 25% of chronic TBI cases, impeding therapy. We hypothesized that chronic adaptive brain mechanisms uncouple vestibular symptoms from signs. This predicts a masking of vestibular diagnoses chronically but not acutely. Hence, defining the spectrum of vestibular diagnoses in acute TBI should

During perceptual learning the visual representations in the brain are altered, but these changes' causal role has not yet been fully characterized. We used transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to investigate the role of higher visual regions in lateral occipital cortex (LO) in perceptual learning with complex objects. We also investigated whether object learning is dependent on the relevance of the objects for the learning task. Participants were trained in two tasks: object recognition using a backward masking paradigm and an orientation judgment task. During both tasks, an object

BACKGROUND: Williams Syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of genetic origin, characterised by relative proficiency in language in the face of serious impairment in several other domains. Individuals with WS display an unusual sensitivity to noise, known as hyperacusis.
METHODS: In this study, we examined the extent to which hyperacusis interferes with the perception of speech in children and adults with WS. Participants were required to discriminate words which differed in one consonant of a cluster when these contrasts were embedded in a background of noise.
RESULTS: Although the

PURPOSE: A relevant aspect of listening is the effort required during speech processing, which can be assessed by pupillometry. Here, we assessed the pupil dilation response of normal-hearing (NH) and hard of hearing (HH) individuals during listening to clear sentences and masked or degraded sentences. We combined this assessment with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to investigate the neural correlates of the pupil dilation response.
METHOD: Seventeen NH participants (Mage = 46 years) were compared to 17 HH participants (Mage = 45 years) who were individually matched in age and e

PURPOSE: Previous studies have shown that levels for 50% speech intelligibility in quiet and in noise differ for different languages. Here, we aimed to find out whether these differences may relate to different auditory processing of temporal sound features in different languages, and to determine the influence of tinnitus on speech comprehension in different languages.
METHODS: We measured speech intelligibility under various conditions (words in quiet, sentences in babble noise, interrupted sentences) along with tone detection thresholds in quiet [PTA] and in noise [PTAnoise], gap detection
