The relation between Schneiderian membrane thickening and radiodiagnostic features of periapical pathology.

This study aimed to assess the relationship between Schneiderian membrane thickening and periapical pathology in a retrospective analysis of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images. For this, 147 CBCT scans containing 258 sinuses and 1,181 teeth were assessed. Discontinuation of the lamina dura, widening of the periodontal ligament space, apical periodontitis (AP), and partly demineralized maxillary sinus floor associated with AP were considered periapical pathology. Maxillary sinus mucosal thickening (MSMT) was classified as odontogenic or non-odontogenic. An irregular band with a focal t

The challenges of treating a fused tooth.

This paper describes and discusses the multidisciplinary treatment involving a permanent maxillary lateral incisor fused to a supernumerary tooth, both presenting pulp necrosis and periapical lesion. A 15-year-old male patient sought treatment complaining of pain, swelling and mobility on the maxillary right lateral incisor. After clinical and radiographic examination, root canal preparation was performed according to the crown-down technique and a calcium hydroxide dressing was placed for 15 days. The patient returned and the definitive endodontic filling was done with thermomechanical compac

A study to determine the added value of 740 screening panoramic radiographs compared to intraoral radiography in the management of adult (>18 years) dentate patients in a primary care setting.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the added value of panoramic radiography in new dentate patients attending for routine treatment. METHODS: Thirty-seven general dental practitioners using panoramic radiographs routinely were recruited. Twenty dentate patients were identified prospectively by each participating dentist if they were new to the practice, attending for an examination and requesting any treatment deemed necessary. A panoramic radiograph was taken with appropriate intraoral radiographs in line with national guidelines. Each dentist completed a radiological report for the panoramic radiograph

Results of root canal treatment in dogs: 127 cases (1995-2000).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate results of root canal treatment in dogs. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION: 127 tooth roots in 64 dogs. PROCEDURE: Radiographs obtained before surgery, immediately after surgery, and during follow-up examinations after surgery were evaluated by 2 individuals. Treatment was considered successful if the periodontal ligament space was normal and possible preoperative root resorption, if present, had ceased. Treatment was considered to show no evidence of failure if possible preoperative root resorption had ceased but a preexisting periapical lesion had remai

Periapical healing after direct pulp capping with calcium-enriched mixture cement: a case report.

This article describes a successful direct pulp capping of a mature symptomatic mandibular second molar in a 14-year-old girl. The patient was referred with sensitivity to cold beverages and pain on chewing on the second left mandibular molar. Clinical examinations revealed extensive coronal caries and sensitivity to percussion. Radiographically, the tooth was mature and had a widened apical periodontal ligament (PDL) and a narrow periapical lesion. The concluding diagnosis was symptomatic irreversible pulpitis with symptomatic apical periodontitis. Treatment included caries removal under rubb

Assessment of periradicular microbiota by DNA-DNA hybridization.

In the present study the "checkerboard" DNA-DNA hybridization technique was used to identify bacteria in periapical endodontic lesions of asymptomatic teeth. Thirty-four patients with root-filled teeth and apical periodontitis were divided into two groups, each containing 17 patients. In Group 1, a marginal incision was performed during surgery to expose the lesion, and in Group 2, a submarginal incision was applied. The gingiva and mucosa were swabbed with an 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate solution prior to surgery. Bacterial DNA was identified in all samples from the two groups using 40 differ

Conservative approach in the management of radicular cyst in a child: case report.

Radicular cyst is the most common odontogenic cystic lesion of inflammatory origin. It is also known as periapical cyst, apical periodontal cyst, root end cyst, or dental cyst. It arises from epithelial residues in the periodontal ligament as a result of inflammation. The inflammation usually follows the death of dental pulp. This paper presents a case report of a patient with radicular cyst associated with a primary molar.

BiodentineTM Full Pulpotomy in Mature Permanent Teeth with Irreversible Pulpitis and Apical Periodontitis.

Vital pulp therapy, including direct pulp capping and partial and full pulpotomy, is primarily indicated for immature or mature permanent teeth with reversible pulpitis. Mature permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis are frequently treated with root canal therapy. This report presents two cases of full pulpotomy using BiodentineTM in mature permanent teeth with irreversible pulpitis and acute apical periodontitis. The periapical radiograph illustrated a deep carious lesion extended to the pulp with apical radiolucency lesion or widened periodontal ligament space. Full pulpotomy with a trica

Detection of presence or absence of herpes simplex virus, Epstein Barr virus and human cytomegalovirus in infected pulp using a polymerase chain reaction.

The development of methods to amplify nucleic acids has provided a way of identifying and quantifying infectious pathogens in infected pulp and periapical region. Recent studies have detected human herpes virus in periapical pathosis and periodontitis. The aim of this study is to detect the presence or absence of herpes simplex virus, human cytomegalovirus and Epstein Barr virus in an infected pulp. Ten pulp tissue samples from teeth with irreversible pulpitis and eight control samples were subjected to polymerase chain reaction(Perkin - Elmer Gene Amplification System) for detection of human

The interleukin gene landscape: understanding its influence on inflammatory mechanisms in apical periodontitis.

Apical periodontitis is a common inflammatory illness caused by microbial infections in the root canal system, which destroys the periapical tissue. This disease's course and severity are highly regulated by a complex interaction of host immunological responses and genetic variables, particularly interleukin (IL) gene polymorphisms. These genetic variants influence cytokine production, the inflammatory cascade, and the ability to resolve infections. Polymorphisms in important cytokines (e.g., IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10, TNF-α, and IL-17) have been linked to worsening or reducing inflammation, affectin

[Effect of weather on odontogenic abscesses].

An increased frequency of odontogenous abcesses was observed on certain days in the course of routine clinical practice. We therefore investigated the possibility of a statistically significant weather-related odontogenous soft-tissue purulence originating from chronic apical periodontitis. Medical reports of patients treated between 1970 and 1977 were used. Our study indicated that the frequency of odontogenous abcesses was significantly higher with cyclonic weather conditions, i.e., weather with low barometric pressure.

Tooth autotransplantation using an interdisciplinary approach to rehabilitation in a young patient: Case report with 7-year follow-up.

This case report demonstrates the possibility of functional and aesthetic rehabilitation using an interdisciplinary approach in a child following avulsion of a tooth. Autotransplantation after the development of calcific metamorphosis of the pulp and acute apical periodontitis provided satisfactory repair after root canal treatment. A 7-year-old white boy avulsed the right maxillary central incisor (tooth 11). The extra-alveolar time exceeded 60 minutes, and this triggered external replacement resorption of the avulsed tooth. At 11 years of age, the child underwent tooth autotransplantation. A

Successful Healing of Periapical Pathology with Partial Pulpotomy in a Mature Permanent Molar: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Vital pulp therapy approaches are preferred over non-surgical root canal treatment, giving the advantage of preserving the vitality of the dental pulp and thus maintaining its benefits. Such approaches can be performed in teeth having normal apical area; however, performing vital pulp therapy approaches in teeth associated with periapical pathology remains controversial. CASE REPORT We present a case of a mature mandibular right first permanent molar tooth in a medically fit 10-year-old female diagnosed as asymptomatic irreversible pulpitis with asymptomatic apical periodontitis wit
