The effects of standing, lifting and noise exposure on preterm birth, growth restriction, and perinatal death in healthy low-risk working military women.

OBJECTIVE: The effects of standing, lifting and noise in low-risk, healthy pregnant women are uncertain. In the past, the heterogeneity of the populations studied, the limitations of the designs of the retrospective and case control studies, and a failure of some of the larger investigations to evaluate all the potential confounding variables has hampered many studies. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate, throughout pregnancy, the effects of standing, repetitive lifting, and noise in the workplace compared with no standing, lifting or noise exposure, on maternal and perinatal out

Elevated brain weight/liver weight ratio in normal body weight centile term perinatal deaths: an indicator of terminal intrauterine malnourishment.

A proportion of antepartum/intrapartum intrauterine deaths (IUDs) with normal or elevated body weight (BW) centile also show an elevated brain weight/liver weight (BLR) ratio. We postulate that this may be an indication of intrauterine malnourishment/incipient intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), which may have a bearing on the cause of death. Searching our departmental postmortem database, we identified 331 IUD/intrapartum deaths (254; 77%) or early neonatal deaths (77; 23%), ≥37/40 weeks gestation in a 4-year period. The customized BW centile, BLR, brain weight/thymus weight ratio (BTR),

External causes are leading causes of death in women of reproductive age: a registry study on maternal perinatal health, hypertensive pregnancy disorders and mortality in Finland.

BACKGROUND: There is a known association between pre-eclampsia (PE) and other hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), and increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). Reproductive history is associated with maternal mortality. We studied the causes of death in women of reproductive age and how a history of HDP affects mortality. METHODS: We collected and analysed the perinatal data of national registers in a study of 555 345 women born in Finland during 1966-1990. The follow-up started from the woman's first birth and ended on the first CVD, death or at the end of the follow-up of 23 y

A missense mutation in the transcription factor ETV5 leads to sterility, increased embryonic and perinatal death, postnatal growth restriction, renal asymmetry and polydactyly in the mouse.

ETV5 (Ets variant gene 5) is a transcription factor that is required for fertility. In this study, we demonstrate that ETV5 plays additional roles in embryonic and postnatal developmental processes in the mouse. Through a genome-wide mouse mutagenesis approach, we generated a sterile mouse line that carried a nonsense mutation in exon 12 of the Etv5 gene. The mutation led to the conversion of lysine at position 412 into a premature termination codon (PTC) within the ETS DNA binding domain of the protein. We showed that the PTC-containing allele produced a highly unstable mRNA, which in turn re

Classifying stillbirths in a tertiary care hospital of India: International Classification of Disease-perinatal Mortality (ICD-PM) versus cause of death-associated condition (CODAC) system.

A number of classification system are available to classify stillbirths, but there remains a lack of a uniform global system of classification. This study evaluated the feasibility of the ICD-PM classification system and COD-AC to classify the stillbirths and to discuss the interpretation of "the newer" classification system (ICD-PM) over the COD-AC system. Over a period of one year, out of 5776 total births 314 were stillborns with a stillbirth rate of 54 per 1000 total births. As per ICD PM Classification System, 69.1% of stillbirths were ante partum and rest intrapartum. The associated mate

SURVIVAL UNTIL DISCHARGE OF VERY-LOW-BIRTH-WEIGHT INFANTS IN TWO CROATIAN PERINATAL CARE REGIONS: A RETROSPECTIVE COHORT STUDY OF TIME AND CAUSE OF DEATH.

We investigated mortality, causes, timing and risk factors for death until hospital discharge in very-low-birth-weight (VLBW) infants born in two Croatian perinatal care regions. This retrospective study included 252 live born VLBW infants. The mortality rate until hospital discharge was 30.5% (77/252). VLBW infants who died had by 4 weeks lower gestational age (GA) than surviving infants (median GA, 25 vs. 29 weeks), lower birth weight (BW) (mean BW, 756.4 vs. 1126.4 g), lower 5-minute Apgar score (median 5 vs. 8) and were more often resuscitated at birth (41.6 vs. 19.4%; p<0.001 all). Intertwin umbilical vein diameter-to-abdominal circumference discordance in type 1 selective fetal growth restriction twins: association with risk of perinatal death in the smaller twin.

OBJECTIVE: Selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR) is a common complication of monochorionic-diamniotic twin pregnancies, and there is no unified clinical standard for determining the optimal timing of intervention. This study aimed to explore the value of ultrasound parameters for identifying risk of perinatal death (PND) of the smaller twin complicated with type 1 sFGR. METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included 49 women with type 1 sFGR twin pregnancies who received regular prenatal ultrasound examination and had complete clinical and follow-up data. The perinatal bereavement project: development and evaluation of supportive guidelines for families experiencing stillbirth and neonatal death in Southeast Brazil-a quasi-experimental before-and-after study.

BACKGROUND: For most parents, getting pregnant means having a child. Generally, the couple outlines plans and has expectations regarding the baby. When these plans are interrupted because of a perinatal loss, it turns out to be a traumatic experience for the family. Validating the grief of these losses has been a challenge to Brazilian society, which is evident considering the childbirth care offered to bereaved families in maternity wards. Positively assessed care that brings physical and emotional memories about the baby has a positive impact on the bereavement process that family undergoes.

Perinatal asphyxia leads to PARP-1 overactivity, p65 translocation, IL-1β and TNF-α overexpression, and apoptotic-like cell death in mesencephalon of neonatal rats: prevention by systemic neonatal nicotinamide administration.

Perinatal asphyxia (PA) is a leading cause of neuronal damage in newborns, resulting in long-term neurological and cognitive deficits, in part due to impairment of mesostriatal and mesolimbic neurocircuitries. The insult can be as severe as to menace the integrity of the genome, triggering the overactivation of sentinel proteins, including poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1). PARP-1 overactivation implies increased energy demands, worsening the metabolic failure and depleting further NAD(+) availability. Using a global PA rat model, we report here evidence that hypoxia increases PARP-1 act

A comparison of the effects of parental risk markers on pre- and perinatal variables in multiple patient cohorts with fetal alcohol syndrome, autism, Tourette syndrome, and sudden infant death syndrome: an enviromic analysis.

The prevalence and magnitude of effect of individual risk markers for specific developmental disorders vary widely across diagnostic category. The four study cohorts for this project were patients from four diagnostic registries in North Dakota for fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS), autism, sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), and Tourette syndrome. These four cohorts were used to estimate prevalence and magnitude of effect of parental risk markers in patients with developmental disabilities. Cases with North Dakota birth certificates were matched with controls. Using birth certificate data, we the
