The axillary lymph nodes in a radical mastectomy specimen from a 70-year-old insulin-dependent diabetic patient contained significantly vacuolated sinus histiocytes. The histologic picture closely resembled metastatic signet ring cell adenocarcinoma. The signet ring histiocytes did not stain with the mucicarmine or periodic acid-schiff stains or any of the immunohistochemical epithelial markers. The differential diagnosis and the possible origin of these vacuolated histiocytes are discussed.

We present a case of a patient with a history of Blau syndrome, who presented with acute onset of widespread florid painful folliculitis rash, which was resistant to the treatment with multiple courses of antibiotics in the community. Despite of the negative skin swab and negative periodic acid-schiff (PAS)stain on the skin biopsy, clinical diagnosis was fungal folliculitis and patient responded well to the course of itraconazole.

We report a case of disseminated histoplasmosis in a 37-year-old male acquired immunodeficiency syndrome patient from south India. The patient presented with high-grade fever, cough, conjunctival nodule and papulonodular hyperpigmented skin lesions. Histology of skin lesions and conjunctival nodule showed numerous intracellular Periodic Acid Schiff-positive rounded yeast cells within macrophages. Bone marrow aspirate confirmed disseminated histoplasmosis. The patient showed dramatic response after starting treatment with Amphotercin B.

In six cases of Whipple's disease the characteristic macrophages could be stained immunocytochemically using a first layer antiserum to group B streptococci. Other types of periodic acid Schiff positive macrophages were negative. The staining appears to be due to a rhamnose containing polysaccharide as shown by a blocking test. The method may be useful for confirming the diagnosis in rectal biopsy and peripheral nodes, especially if small intestinal findings are atypical.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the distribution and amount of elastic fibers in the dermis of clinically normal dogs and dogs with dermatoses, particularly solar dermatitis.
DESIGN: Skin specimens from 7 anatomic sites were obtained from 19 clinically normal dogs after euthanasia to evaluate the normal distribution of elastic fibers. This study compared the intestinal goblet cell density of turkey poults at 2 different ages using Alcian blue-periodic acid-Shiff (AB-PAS) and mucicarmine stains. We studied mutations of the adult voltage-gated skeletal muscle sodium channel gene in 12 families, from diverse ethnic backgrounds, with hyperkalemic periodic paralysis (HyperPP). We describe a novel procedure, using ligase chain reaction (LCR), to simultaneously identify two different point mutations (previously described) and one rare, apparently benign polymorphism that results in a nonconservative amino acid substitution.
