AIM: To create a reliable system for assessing of severity and prediction of the outcome of peritonitis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Critical analysis of the systems for peritonitis severity assessment is presented. The study included outcomes of 347 patients who admitted at the Department of Faculty Surgery of Peoples' Friendship University of Russia in 2015-2016. The cause of peritonitis were destructive forms of acute appendicitis, cholecystitis, perforated gastroduodenal ulcer, various perforation of small and large intestines (including tumor).
RESULTS: Combined forecasting system for periton…

Abdominal cocoon, or idiopathic sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, is a rare condition characterised by the presence of a dense fibrocollagenous membrane partially or totally encapsulating the small bowel leading to recurrent intestinal obstructions. We present the case of a patient who has presented for the fourth time with a small bowel obstruction. Previous laparoscopy revealed a plaque-like reactive process encapsulating much of the small bowel and the liver. After initial adhesiolysis, the patient's obstructions continued to reoccur. Further laparotomy was performed in order to excise …

INTRODUCTION: Vernix caseosa peritonitis (VCP) is a very unusual complication caused by inflammatory response to amniotic fluid spilled into the maternal peritoneal cavity. Twenty-seven cases have been reported, and all occurred after cesarean section.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of VCP following vaginal delivery; this may be the first case reported after vaginal delivery. Mrs. A, 28 years old, gravida 3, para 2, with one previous cesarean section, was admitted at 41 weeks gestation in active labor. Vacuum extraction was performed to deliver a healthy male baby, 4.410 kg, Apgar score…

Abdominal cocoon, the idiopathic form of sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, is a rare condition of unknown etiology that results in an intestinal obstruction due to total or partial encapsulation of the small bowel by a fibrocollagenous membrane. Preoperative diagnosis requires a high index of clinical suspicion. The early clinical features are nonspecific, are often not recognized and it is difficult to make a definite pre-operative diagnosis. Clinical suspicion may be generated by the recurrent episodes of small intestinal obstruction combined with relevant imaging findings and lack of ot…

Various complications have been reported in scrub typhus cases including acute respiratory distress syndrome, encephalitis, pneumonia, pericarditis, acute renal failure, and acute hepatic failure. Few studies have reported on the gastrointestinal manifestations of scrub typhus. Typical gastrointestinal manifestations in patients with scrub typhus include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, hematemesis, melena, and diarrhea. The two cases presented in this study are the first reported cases of peritonitis associated with scrub typhus. This study shows that scrub typhus should also be included in …

In Tanzania, Schistosoma mansoni is endemic and causes intestinal schistosomiasis which affects various internal organs. However, worldwide there have been very few reports of cases of peritonitis due to schistosomal appendicitis. Here we report a rare case of schistosomal appendicitis with peritonitis in a 33 year-old male patient who recovered quickly after surgery.

Biliary atresia, malrotation, meconium peritonitis and transient hypothyroidism are occasionally seen in neonatal infants. Biliary atresia associated with malrotation has been reported in some patients with polysplenia syndrome, but biliary atresia associated with meconium peritonitis has only been described by a few investigators. Here we present a case of meconium peritonitis due to malrotation with volvulus, followed by biliary atresia and transient hypothyroidism during early infancy.

Two women, aged 31 and 37 years, had abdominal pain and fever several months after giving birth and a few weeks after receiving an intrauterine device. Both patients were admitted and treated under the working diagnosis of pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). They appeared to have pneumococcal adnexitis and pneumococcal peritonitis. Both patients recovered after initiating directed antibiotic treatment. Peritonitis in previously healthy adults is seldom caused by pneumococci. Standard antibiotics that are effective when given empirically for PID may be a suboptimal treatment for pneumococcal per…

AIM: To investigate the relationship between encapsulating peritonitis and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF).
METHODS: The patient had a history of type 2 diabetes and laparoscopic cholecystectomy was performed one year ago for cholelithiasis. Eleven months after the operation she developed massive ascites. Biochemical evaluation revealed hyperglycemia, mild Fe deficiency anemia, hypoalbuminemia and a CA-125 level of 2 700 IU. Ascitic evaluation showed characteristics of exudation with a cell count of 580/mm(3). Abdominal CT showed omental thickening and massive ascites. At exploratory lapar…

Pelvic actinomycosis is an infection due to actinomyces organism associated with an intra-uterine contraceptive device. This infection is often revealed by an uni- or bilateral adrenal lesion. Lesions are sometimes more extensive and affect next pelvic organs: rectum, ureter, bladder. Diagnosis is often histologic with percutaneous biopsy or surgical biopsy (laparotomy or coelio surgery). Treatment is mainly medical with prolonged use of penicillin (6 months in severely cases). Surgery must be thrifty and conservative.

They are revised the clinical and diagnostic manifestations of tuberculous peritonitis. For this, it is provided our experience in three cases: 2 women and 1 man with ages between 49 and 79 years old. The more frequent clinical manifestations were general syndrome and ascites in all the cases (100%) and fever in 2 (66%). The mantoux was positive in two cases. The peritoneal fluid presented lymphocytic exudate and determination of adenosine deaminase increased in all the cases. The diagnosis was performed through laparoscopy with peritoneal biopsy with presence of necrotic granulomas. Only in 1…

Most infections causing by Streptococcus pyogenes are known to be putrid both in adults and children, for example laryngitis, impetigo, cellulitis, scarlet fever, septic shock, toxic shock syndrome etc. Their clinical importance relates to a number of causes: 1) about 20% of the population are S. pyogenes carriers; 2) the clinical course of infections is often severe or even fatal; 3) there is real danger of nosocomial outbursts; 4) a world-wide increase in both the rate and invasiveness of the microbe. Acute primary peritonitis due to S. pyogenes seems to be a rare clinical event. In order to…

Ascaris lumbricoides is one of the most common and most widespread helminthic infections of humans. Infection with ascaris appears to be asymptomatic in the vast majority of cases, but may produce serious pulmonary disease or obstruction of biliary or intestinal tract in a small proportion of infected people. We examined under the light of literature this case which caused the granulomatous peritonitis by ascaris, the adult worm, without any evidence of intestinal perforation.

Thirty five patients with tuberculous peritonitis were studied retrospectively. Tuberculous peritonitis was defined as the isolation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis from ascites or dialysate, and/or caseating granuloma/acid-fast bacilli from peritoneal biopsy specimens from patients with pulmonary tuberculosis or a response to treatment for tuberculosis. Among the patients studied, nine with cirrhosis of the liver; seven with diabetes mellitus and six with end-stage renal disease, of whom four had undergone continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis. The most frequent signs of tuberculous periton…

BACKGROUND: Sclerosing peritonitis (SP) is a rare but serious complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). Small-bowel obstruction (SBO) due to encapsulation, dense adhesions, or mural fibrous is characteristic, often associated with peritonitis. The aim of the study was to determine the incidence, clinical features, effect of duration of dialysis, and other possible aetiological factors in severe SP.
METHODS: All dialysis units in Australia were surveyed for possible cases up to 1994. Patients were included if there was either surgical or radiological evidence of sclerosing encapsulating perito…

Peritonitis following suprapubic catheter placement may result from inadvertent placement of the drain through the large and small bowel and bladder base. The author describes a case of infectious peritonitis which developed after suprapubic catheter removal. The patient, underwent suprapubic catheter placement after Burch Colposuspension for genuine stress incontinence. The catheter was removed with a full bladder after an uneventful postoperative course, but the patient subsequently developed acute infectious peritonitis due to extravasated urine from the cystostomy site. It was concluded th…
