BACKGROUND: Intraneural ganglion cysts of the peroneal nerve are rare, and there is lack of evidence for the surgical management of this entity. We performed this study to evaluate the imaging, diagnosis, treatment and outcome of seven patients with intraneural ganglion cysts of the peroneal nerve.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively studied the files of seven patients with intraneural ganglion cysts of the peroneal nerve, diagnosed and treated from 2016 to 2019. Diagnostic approach included clinical examination of the leg and foot, magnetic resonance imaging, nerve conduction studies,

BACKGROUND: Common fibular (peroneal) nerve (CFN) entrapment is the most frequent nerve entrapment in the lower extremity. It can cause pain, sensory abnormalities, and reduced ability to dorsiflex the foot or a drop foot. A simple test to assist with diagnosis of CFN entrapment is described as an adjunctive clinical tool for the diagnosis of CFN entrapment and also as a predictor of successful surgical decompression of a CFN entrapment.
METHODS: The test, a lidocaine injection into the peroneus longus muscle at the site of a common fibular nerve entrapment, was studied retrospectively in 21

Peroneal nerve palsy is the most common entrapment neuropathy of the lower extremity. Numerous etiologies have been identified; however, compression remains the most common cause. Although injury to the nerve may occur anywhere along its course from the sciatic origin to the terminal branches in the foot and ankle, the most common site of compressive pathology is at the level of the fibular head. The most common presentation is acute complete or partial foot drop. Associated numbness in the foot or leg may be present, as well. Neurodiagnostic studies may be helpful for identifying the site of

There are many causes for the paralysis of the external sciatic popliteal nerve , such as the intraneural ganglion cyst. In this case, we evaluate a 52-year-old woman with no relevant personal record, who was admitted with paresis of the right foot of 4 months of evolution associated with alterations in the sensitivity that rose up to the posterolateral region of the leg. The diagnosis was based on MR and cyst decompression and disconnection of the articular branch. Given the low incidence of these lesions, their origin is still subject to controversy. The most widely accepted theory is the un

Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsy is characterized by acute, painless, recurrent mononeuropathies secondary to minor trauma or compression. A 16-year-old boy had the first episode of right foot drop after minor motorcycle accident. Electromyography revealed conduction block and slowing velocity conduction of the right deep peroneal nerve at the fibular head. After motor rehabilitation, he fully recovered. Six months later he had the second episode of foot drop in the opposite site after prolonged squatting position. Electromyography revealed sensorimotor polyneuropathy of

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of leprous neuropathy is mostly empirical and electrophysiological studies may not truly represent the clinical findings. This study comprehensively evaluates the neuroelectrophysiology and looks at clinico-electrophysiological dissociation.
METHODS: Conventional electrophysiological recording included evaluation of median, ulnar, radial, tibial, and common peroneal nerve; an extended protocol included great auricular, phrenic, and facial nerves, along with sympathetic skin response and blink reflex. Nerve biopsy and slit skin smear were done to aid categorization.

OBJECTIVE: The incidence, cause, and prognosis of sciatic neuropathy in children is not well understood. We report our 30-year experience of 53 patients with pediatric sciatic neuropathies (SN).
METHODS: Prospective review of the history, physical examination, electrophysiologic findings, and clinical course of children with SN.
RESULTS: The etiology of SN injury was varied and included trauma (13), iatrogenic causes (13) (8 orthopedic surgeries and 5 miscellaneous surgeries), prolonged extrinsic compression and immobilization (6), tumors (7), vascular (5), idiopathic and progressive (4), in

This case report illustrates how a person with a complex series of injuries and surgeries can regain a capacity of hope and healing utilizing the Trager® Approach. The client presents with a Foot Drop on the right side, severe chronic pain and hopelessness, and a desire and willingness to feel better. He survived a forty-foot fall from a tree, twenty years ago, and has lived with extensive repair to his spine. He has been living with pain from the limited mobility of spinal rods, vertebral fusions, and more recent hip replacements. Now, in an aging body, he seeks alternative care after being t

For a foot drop resulting from peroneal nerve palsy transferring the tibialis posterior tendon is a standard surgical treatment. The situation of foot drop with no functioning tibialis posterior presents a challenge. We describe a case of successful flexor hallucis longus transfer in such a case. Key words: foot drop, flexor hallucis longus, peroneal nerve palsy; tendon transfer.

The superficial peroneal nerve is now known as the superficial fibular nerve (SFN). Identification and treatment of entrapment of the SFN are important topics of discussion for foot and ankle surgeons, because overlooking the diagnosis can lead to permanent nerve damage. With the proper tools and skills, surgeons are able to help patients with symptomatic SFN entrapment, patients who often present in some degree of desperation, with the peripheral nerve surgeon as a last resort.

This article thoroughly describes the clinical examination and treatment of common fibular (peroneal) nerve compression. Aspects discussed include the anatomy of the nerve, cause of entrapment, symptoms associated with impairment, and a surgical approach to decompress the entrapped nerve. The standard protocol for decompression as it would apply to the common fibular nerve tunnel is illustrated.

Several systemic and neurological complications can occur with Plasmodium falciparum malaria, of which cerebral malaria is well known and is the most serious. Rarely, patients may suffer a neurological disorder that occurs after complete recovery from P. falciparum infection, an entity known as post-malaria neurological syndrome (PMNS). It is a rare and transient clinical syndrome in which patients with symptomatic malaria infection, after parasitic clearance from the peripheral blood, develop neurological symptoms within 2 months of recovery. We report a case of PMNS manifesting as bilateral

OBJECTIVES: To assess potential correlations between intraepidermal nerve fiber densities (IENFD), graded with light microscopy, and clinical measures of peripheral neuropathy in elderly male subjects with normal glucose tolerance (NGT), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT), and type 2 diabetes (T2DM), respectively.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: IENFD was assessed in thin sections of skin biopsies from distal leg in 86 men (71-77 years); 24 NGT, 15 IGT, and 47 T2DM. Biopsies were immunohistochemically stained for protein gene product (PGP) 9.5, and intraepidermal nerve fibers (IENF) were quantified manu
