Bio-based fertilizers (BBFs) produced from organic waste contribute to closed-loop nutrient cycles and circular agriculture. However, persistent organic contaminants, such as per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), as well as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be present in organic waste or be formed during valorization processes. Consequently, these hazardous substances may be introduced into agricultural soils and the food chain via BBFs. This study assessed the exposure of 84 target substances

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a widespread and persistent environmental contaminant. Plants are able to take up a range of harmful organic compounds, including some of the most abundant environmental pollutants like TCE. In this study, complementary DNA microarrays were constructed to have a better view of transcript expression in Arabidopsis thaliana during TCE-induced stress. The microarray analysis demonstrated the complexity of gene expression patterns resulting from TCE. A total of 1,020 transcripts were differentially up-regulated by TCE. Those genes might specifically contribute to the TCE

Esterases play a crucial role in the degradation of phthalic acid esters (PAEs), the common persistent organic pollutants and endocrine disrupting chemicals. However, only a few esterases for PAEs degradation have been characterized. In this study, a novel esterase from Desulfurellaceae bacterium (DeEst) has been identified. We found its hydrolytic activity toward three regioisomers of benzene-dicarboxylic acid esters (i.e., diethyl phthalate, diethyl isophthalate, and diethyl terephthalate). Notably, DeEst is capable of hydrolyzing diethyl phthalate and other PAEs to phthalic acid (PA). The b

Microplastics (MPs) are widespread environmental pollutants. This study primarily examines the changes in electro distribution of aged MPs in aquatic environments and their subsequent impact on the environment. Under the action of natural and artificial aging, the electron cloud arrangement of MPs will change, thus affecting the relevant properties of MPs. Among them, the free radicals formed by advanced oxidation technology will be enriched on the surface of MPs carrying benzene rings, and react with other pollutants (organic pollutants, heavy metals, etc.) adsorbed by MPs to form environment

In a cross-sectional study among 953 young Danish men (2008-2011), Jensen et al. reported that sleep disturbances showed inverse U-shaped associations with semen parameters and testis size (Am J Epidemiol. 2013;177(10):1027-1037). Sleep disturbances were associated with several factors likely to affect semen parameters (such as history of sexually transmitted infections) that cannot all be efficiently controlled for, leaving room for residual confounding. Future studies could adopt a longitudinal design and rely on objective personal measures of sleep quality and duration using accelerometers.

As rising global emissions and climate change amplify environmental contamination, long-term monitoring is essential to quantify trends and assess or predict impacts on wildlife. Over the past four decades, such monitoring was part of a Trilateral Monitoring and Assessment Program (TMAP), in which levels of various persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and total mercury were measured in eggs of Eurasian oystercatchers (Haematopus ostralegus) and common terns (Sterna hirundo) breeding across the Wadden Sea. The pollutants examined included six dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane isomers (Σ DDT), cis

Environmental xenobiotics, encompassing a wide spectrum of chemical pollutants such as particulate matter-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs), heavy metals, endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pesticides, and emerging contaminants like nanomaterials and microplastics, have been increasingly implicated in impairing lung tissue function. These agents enter the body primarily through inhalation, particularly via outdoor air pollution, indoor contaminants, and occupational exposures, with additional contributions

Organochlorine compounds (OCs) such as chlorobenzenes (CB) are persistent organic pollutants that are ubiquitous in soils at organochlorine pesticides (OCP) production sites. Long-term contamination with OCs might alter the soil microbial structure and further affect soil functions. However, the effects of OCs regarding the shaping of microbial community structures in the soils of OCs-contaminated sites remain obscure, especially in the vertical soil profile where pollutants are highly concealed. Hence this paper explored the status and causes of OCs pollution (CB, hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH),

The Sea of Marmara is undergoing a severe marine pollution crisis driven by chronic nutrient enrichment and recurrent mucilage outbreaks. The physical mechanisms controlling transport, accumulation and persistence of pollutants and organic matter remain insufficiently resolved. Here, we quantify how three-dimensional (3D) circulation regulates dispersal and retention in this strongly stratified, semi-enclosed basin. A high-resolution Lagrangian particle-tracking framework forced by the Coastal and Regional Ocean COmmunity model (CROCO) resolves transport pathways and transit times, with partic

Rapid warming in the Antarctic Peninsula not only affects ecosystem structure and species distributions but may also alter the transport, bioavailability, and effects of persistent pollutants - heightening the urgency of understanding contaminant dynamics in this vulnerable region. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are globally recognized persistent organic pollutants, yet their occurrence in Antarctic biota remains poorly constrained. We quantified 15 PFAS in feathers, eggshells and guano of Pygoscelis penguins collected at three colonies on King George Island (2021-2022). Most analy

Kidney disease is a growing global public health challenge that accounts for substantial morbidity, premature mortality, and rising healthcare costs. Although diabetes mellitus and hypertension remain the principal clinical risk factors for renal injury, accumulating evidence indicates that environmental pollution represents an independent and globally pervasive contributor to kidney disease burden. Long-term exposure to environmental toxicants, including heavy metals, ambient air pollutants, persistent organic pollutants, and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, has been consistently associated wi

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants, and detecting them at trace-levels in complex aquatic products remains challenging. Herein, a novel natural product derived covalent organic polymer was synthesized via a mild diazo-coupling reaction between aloeemodin and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. As a solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating, it exhibited excellent adsorption affinity for OCPs due to multiple interactions (hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and halogen bonding), which was confirmed by density functional theory calculations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

Persistent polyhalogenated organic pollutants are present worldwide and accumulate along the food chain. They interfere with human and animal health and are particularly harmful for pre- and perinatal neurodevelopment. The mechanisms behind the observed effects vary depending on the specific compound investigated. Co-planar polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can act via the arylhydrocarbon receptor while many ortho-substituted PCBs disrupt intracellular Ca(2+) homeostasis. A common mechanism for a wide variety of PCBs is interference with thyroid hormone (TH) signalling in developing brain, by c

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) is a persistent organic pollutant that has attracted much attention due to its wide environmental distribution and potential toxicity. Intestinal microbiota is an important regulator of host health, and its composition and metabolic function are easily interfered with by environmental pollutants. In this study, the effects of PFOS exposure on gut microbiota, lipid metabolism, and host health were investigated in mice. The results showed that PFOS exposure did not significantly change α diversity, but significantly affected the β diversity and community stru

The decline in insect populations is indisputable. Currently, the effects of persistent organic pollutants on insect populations have not been sufficiently investigated. Maternal transfer of pollutants is considered to be an inherently correct reason for sex differences in pollutant levels in oviparous organisms. Therefore, in this study, we exposed silkworms (Bombyx mori) to different levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to investigate their effects on silkworm development and the sex-specific regulation of PCBs during metamorphosis. PCB exposure causes disorders in amino acid, energy,

The pervasive spread of microplastics (MPs) in the environment (including air, water, and food) has raised concerns regarding human health. These pollutants have been detected in various human tissues such as lungs, colon, blood, placenta, tumors, and body fluids. MPs may act as vectors for toxic and carcinogenic substances, including heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants. They can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and genotoxicity, thereby altering cellular and metabolic processes, mechanisms implicated in cancer pathogenesis. Recent studies highlight the presence of MPs in huma

Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have been shown to form on the surfaces of various types of transition metal-containing particulate matter (PM), and it has been demonstrated they are capable of initiating adverse health impacts. Following sonification and solvent extraction for chemical analysis, they are partially converted to molecular species. Alcoholic solvents extracted the EPFRs with near 100% efficiency, while nonpolar hydrocarbon solvents exhibited <20% efficiency and dichloromethane exhibited 20-55% efficiency. The extracted radicals reacted in solution to form multip

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent organic pollutants that exhibit high bioaccumulation and toxicity, posing a significant threat to marine ecosystems. This study integrated transcriptomics, computational modeling, and experimental validation to elucidate the detoxification metabolism and hepatotoxicity of a PAHs mixture (phenanthrene: chrysene: benzo[a]pyrene = 1:1:1) in the Manila clam (Ruditapes philippinarum). PAHs exposure activated detoxification genes via aryl hydrocarbon receptor and HR96-like pathways, with additional modulation through neurotransmitter-mediated NF

The objective of this study was to investigate the transport behavior of two organic and persistent contaminants (alachlor and pentachlorobenzene) on Danube alluvial sediment in the absence and in the presence of microbially inoculated biochar produced at 400 °C and three hydrochars produced at 180, 200, and 220 °C. Stainless steel columns were used for the sorption experiments in nonequilibrium conditions. Obtained results were modeled using the advective-dispersive equation under nonequilibrium conditions. Transport of these compounds through the alluvial sediment column showed that the rete

At the local scale, environmental surveillance often overlooks diet-related exposures. In this study, we examined whether community cats managed through Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) programs could serve as effective sentinels of human-relevant chemical mixtures shaped by local food environments. Intraoperative whole blood samples from 205 free-roaming cats were collected on two islands of the Canary archipelago, La Graciosa (n = 107) and Gran Canaria (n = 98), and analyzed for 55 elements and >360 organic contaminants using validated ICP-MS and micro-QuEChERS LC/GC-MS/MS workflows. The islands dis
