Theories and determinants of self-care and self-efficacy in inflammatory bowel diseases: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is a chronic condition requiring complex, lifelong self-care. While self-care and self-efficacy are critical for improving patient outcomes, the theoretical underpinnings and key determinants influencing these processes are not well synthesized. A comprehensive understanding is essential for developing effective, patient-centred interventions. This systematic review aimed to evaluate theories and determinants of self-care and self-efficacy in IBD patients. METHODS: Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we searched PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Sci

A close look at sociality in DSM criteria.

PURPOSE: The importance of sociality in psychology and psychotherapy is quite undisputed; however, this construct risks being underestimated in psychiatric nosography. The aim of the review was to assess the relevance of sociality in DSM 5 criteria. METHOD: Sociality-laden criteria of 192 selected DSM categories have been identified through a textual grid. Second, the criteria have been classified into 6 categories, i.e., (1) Affiliation and Attachment (AA), (2) Social Communication (SC), (3) Perception and Understanding of Others (PUO), (4) Culture, (5) Clinical Significance Criterion (CSC)

Healthy ageing and home: the perspectives of very old people in five European countries.

This paper reports on in-depth research, using a grounded theory approach, to examine the ways in which very old people perceive healthy ageing in the context of living alone at home within urban settings in five European countries. This qualitative study was part of a cross-national project entitled ENABLE-AGE which examined the relationship between home and healthy ageing. Interviews explored the notion of healthy ageing, the meaning and importance of home, conceptualisations of independence and autonomy and links between healthy ageing and home. Data analysis identified five ways in which o

YSQ-GeMS: Development of a Short Form of the Young Schema Questionnaire for Geriatric Mental Health Care Using Item Response Theory.

Schema therapy is effective for older adults with personality disorders, but the Young Schema Questionnaire (YSQ) may be too lengthy for use in geriatric mental health care. This study evaluated the construct validity of the YSQ-L2 in adults aged 35-97 years receiving residential or outpatient geriatric, psychiatric or medical care and developed a shorter form for this population. Data from 214 participants from Dutch nursing homes and outpatient services were analysed using Item Response Theory across 16 YSQ-L2 subscales. Each subscale was reduced to five items based on discrimination, diffic

Collective narcissism moderates the effect of in-group image threat on intergroup hostility.

Results of 4 experiments demonstrated that under in-group image threat collective narcissism predicts retaliatory intergroup hostility. Under in-group criticism (vs. praise) collective narcissists expressed intention to harm the offending out-group but not other, nonoffending out-groups. This effect was specific to collective narcissism and was replicated in studies that accounted for the overlap between collective narcissism and individual narcissism, in-group positivity (in-group identification, blind and constructive patriotism), social dominance orientation, and right wing authoritarianism

Persons with acquired profound hearing loss (APHL): how do they and their families adapt to the challenge?

The study examined the impact of acquired profound hearing loss (APHL) on the relationship between the hearing impaired person and their normally hearing close family member, usually a partner, and identified the kinds of adjustment leading to maintenance or deterioration of the relationship. The participants were 25 people with APHL and 25 family members, interviewed separately in their own home. Analysis of the interview transcripts adopted a grounded theory methodology. The different levels of analysis were linked in terms of a core category based on the social construction of a committed r

[The Psychiatric and Social-Communication Record, an instrument for the standardized inventory of neurotic findings].

The comparable documentation of neurotic conditions is a supposition for the scientific access to neuroses, especially concerning psychotherapy research and epidemiology. Efforts on this field have rarely brought satisfying results. This paper shows the construction and the application of a documentary scheme, which describes neurotic conditions under a psychoanalytic point of view and accentuates the aspect of interpersonal relationships: The psychic and socialcommunicative report (PSB). In contrast to other charts, PSB avoids the use of psychoanalytic theory and of psychopathological terms a

Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology Questionnaire in Swedish Prehospital Care: Translation, Cross-Cultural Adaptation, and Pilot Psychometric Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital technologies in emergency medical services (EMS) have become crucial for patient outcomes and survival, and the integration of novel technologies drives rapid transformation within EMS. Understanding the acceptance and use of digital technology among EMS health care providers is paramount for implementation and effective use of novel digital tools. Currently, instruments assessing acceptance of technology are lacking within the Swedish EMS context. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to translate and culturally adapt the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology

Patient perspectives on adherence to a virtual multimodal (P)REHABILITATION program in gastrointestinal cancer: a theory-driven qualitative behavioural analysis.

PURPOSE: This qualitative study explored barriers and facilitators to adherence among participants of a virtual multimodal (p)rehabilitation program for gastrointestinal cancer surgery and investigated how these aligned with constructs from Temporal Self-Regulation Theory (TST), a theoretical behaviour change framework. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with participants of the PRIORITY-CONNECT 2 Pilot Trial, a virtual multimodal (p)rehabilitation program for patients undergoing major gastrointestinal cancer surgery. TST informed the development of the semi-stru

Hypermentalizing: the development and validation of a self-report measure.

INTRODUCTION: Hypermentalizing (referred to as excessive theory of mind or biased mindreading) is defined as the tendency to make assumptions about other people's mental states that go beyond observable data. Despite recent interest in this construct, no self-report measure of hypermentalizing exists. The aim of the current study was to fully operationalize the construct of hypermentalizing by developing a theoretically grounded (attachment-based) self-report measure of hypermentalizing assessing mentalizing related to parents, peers and intimate partners; and evaluate the new measure for its

Interpersonal emotion regulation and emotional adjustment in adolescence: Directional associations and strategy-specific effects.

BACKGROUND: Previous theories and empirical studies suggest that interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) and specific IER strategies are closely linked to emotional adjustment. However, reciprocal associations among these constructs have rarely been examined while accounting for the temporal stability, and the existing evidence remains mixed. Using random intercept cross-lagged panel models (RI-CLPM), this study examined within-person bidirectional associations between IER and emotional adjustment (depressive symptoms and life satisfaction) among Chinese early adolescents. This study then inves

A conceptual framework related to ICT-AT competence development: The theoretical foundations of ENTELIS.

This paper provides an overview of the construction of a conceptual framework regarding ICT-Assistive Technology (ICT-AT) competence development, designed to gain awareness of the elements involved and to facilitate the understanding and exchange among stakeholders of the ENTELIS (European Network for Technology Enhanced Learning in an Inclusive Society) project. The framework was designed based on the basic principles of Activity Theory, which however have been adapted and adjusted to the project's objectives. Hence, it includes a map of actors and other parameters functioning in a person sur

There's no place like (a) home: ontological security among persons with serious mental illness in the United States.

As the homelessness 'crisis' in the United States enters a third decade, few are as adversely affected as persons with serious mental illness. Despite recent evidence favoring a 'housing first' approach, the dominant 'treatment first' approach persists in which individuals must climb a ladder of program requirements before becoming eligible for an apartment of their own. Drawing upon the concept of 'ontological security', this qualitative study examines the subjective meaning of 'home' among 39 persons who were part of a unique urban experiment that provided New York City's homeless mentally i

Improving patient information leaflets: developing and applying an evaluative model of patient-centredness for text.

The purpose of this paper is to present an evaluative model of patient-centredness for text and to illustrate how this can be applied to patient information leaflets (PILs) that accompany medication in the European Union. Patients have criticized PILs for sidelining their experiences, knowledge and affective needs, and denying their individuality. The health communication paradigm of patient-centredness provides valuable purchase on these issues, taking its starting point in the dignity and integrity of the patient as a person. Employing this evaluative model involves two stages. First, a Fouc

Treatment and generalization of complex sentence production in agrammatism.

The present study applies single-subject experimental design to examine (a) the acquisition and generalization of complex sentence production in agrammatism using Linguistic Specific Treatment (LST) and (b) the utility of syntactic theory in guiding hypotheses of treatment effects. LST trains construction and production of complex sentence structures. Four sentence types were selected for study: object clefts and object-extracted matrix and embedded questions (which are noncanonical with wh-movement), and embedded actives (which are canonical with no overt movement). All sentences contain over

Finding Peace in Pixels: Exploring the Therapeutic Mechanisms of Virtual Nature for Young Adults' Mental Well-Being.

Background: This investigation examines the phenomenological dimensions of young adults' engagement with virtual natural environments for psychological stress amelioration through rigorous thematic analysis. Contemporary epidemiological data reveal a concerning prevalence of stress among young adults aged 18 to 29 years, with approximately 30% reporting moderate to severe manifestations. Despite virtual reality (VR)'s emergence as a promising modality for mental well-being interventions, a significant lacuna exists regarding the qualitative understanding of these immersive experiences. Reunification of Object and View-Center Background Information in the Primate Medial Temporal Lobe.

Recent work has shown that the medial temporal lobe (MTL), including the hippocampus (HPC) and its surrounding limbic cortices, plays a role in scene perception in addition to episodic memory. The two basic factors of scene perception are the object ("what") and location ("where"). In this review, we first summarize the anatomical knowledge related to visual inputs to the MTL and physiological studies examining object-related information processed along the ventral pathway briefly. Thereafter, we discuss the space-related information, the processing of which was unclear, presumably because of

Evaluation of a scale of patient-reported outcomes for the assessment of myasthenia gravis patients in China.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate a scale of patient-reported outcomes for the assessment of myasthenia gravis patients (MG-PRO) in China. METHODS: A total of 100 MG patients were interviewed for the field testing. Another 56 MG patients were selected and assessed with the MG-PRO scale before treatment and at 1, 2 and 4 weeks after treatment. The classical test theory and item response theory (IRT) were used to assess the psychometric characteristics of the MG-PRO scale. RESULTS: The MG-PRO scale included 4 dimensions: physical, psychological, social environment, and treatment. Confirmatory factor anal

Female orgasm rates are largely independent of other traits: implications for "female orgasmic disorder" and evolutionary theories of orgasm.

INTRODUCTION: The criteria for "female orgasmic disorder" (FOD) assume that low rates of orgasm are dysfunctional, implying that high rates are functional. Evolutionary theories about the function of female orgasm predict correlations of orgasm rates with sexual attitudes and behavior and other fitness-related traits. AIM: To test hypothesized evolutionary functions of the female orgasm. METHODS: We examined such correlations in a community sample of 2,914 adult female Australian twins who reported their orgasm rates during masturbation, intercourse, and other sexual activities, and who comp
