The concept of a person with a disability has evolved from a medical-biological perspective to a biopsychosocial understanding that considers the dynamic interaction between functioning, disability, and contextual factors, as proposed by the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health. However, a tension can be observed between this model and legislation that automatically recognizes certain conditions as disabilities without the corresponding functional assessment. Among these conditions are monocular vision, autism spectrum disorder, and fibromyalgia. This opinion arti

Robots increasingly share spaces with people, supporting delivery services and mobility for the aging populations, yet their ability to share space comfortably lacks understanding and benchmarks for designers and policy-makers. We compared human-robot (HRI) and human-human (HHI) interactions across four real-world crowd datasets spanning Europe, North America, and Asia, using a unified pipeline to detect interactions, stratify by crowd density, and model pedestrian behavior. Local motion patterns (speed, acceleration, and jerk) remained closely matched between HRI and HHI across all densities.

An increasing number of studies have used multi-armed bandit tasks to investigate individual differences in exploration behavior. However, the psychometric properties of exploration measures remain unexplored. We examine the test-retest reliability, convergent, divergent, and external validity of model-based estimates of exploration strategies using three canonical paradigms. Our results revealed poor to moderate reliability, with minimal correlations for the same strategy across tasks. We then provide actionable recommendations for how to improve reliability and convergence across tasks: Simp

The collection of early embryonic stages from the donor animal and their in vitro development through to transfer back into a recipient animal has gained enormous importance both in understanding embryo physiology and in its application for breeding purposes. Whereas not so long ago the focus was on embryo retrieval after superovulation from the donor animal, oocyte collection by follicular puncture followed by in vitro production (IVP) is now the main source of bovine embryos. However, as recent years of intensive research have shown, it appears to be very difficult to reproduce the extreme c

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by pervasive difficulties with self-image, interpersonal relationships, emotion regulation and impulse control. Impulsive behaviors can be assessed using tasks such as the stop-signal task (SST). Traditional SSTs are repetitive and cognitively demanding, requiring sustained attention and effort over extended periods. This can be challenging, particularly for clinical populations who often experience difficulties with attention, emotional regulation, and frustration tolerance. In this study, we examined whether a gamified version of the SST

In recent years, family counseling programs have grown significantly. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a counseling program designed for Late Talkers (LT) or children with Development Language Disorder (DLD) aged 3-6. It also seeks to analyze the differences between its implementation in virtual and in-person settings and to gather the opinions of speech therapists and families about the program. A quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design was employed with two groups, each consisting of 17 children, totaling 34 children: one in an in-person setting and the other in

Considering the worldwide impact of heart failure, it is crucial to develop approaches that can help us comprehend its root cause and make accurate predictions about its outcome. This is essential for lowering the suffering and death rates connected with this widespread illness. Cardiomyopathies frequently result from genetic factors, and the study of heart failure genetics is advancing quickly. Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is the most prevalent kind of cardiomyopathy, encompassing both genetic and nongenetic abnormalities. It is distinguished by the enlargement of the left ventricle or both v

Healthcare providers often are uncertain about how best to assess and manage breast cancer risk. Women at average risk wonder when to start mammography and how often to go. Women at increased risk might inquire about genetic testing, MRI screening, and preventive measures. Patients who carry gene mutations face higher stakes and more complex risk management choices, but only some are aware of their status. This article helps clinicians stratify breast cancer risk and discusses a newer genomic test, the polygenic risk score, that may enable more personalized risk management and decision-making.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological testing is essential for both clinical and basic stroke research; however, the in-person nature of this testing is a limitation. Virtual testing overcomes the hurdles of geographic location, mobility issues and permits social distancing, yet its validity has received relatively little investigation, particularly in comparison with in-person testing.
METHOD: We expand on our prior findings of virtual testing feasibility by assessing virtual versus in-person administration of language and communication tasks with 48 left-hemisphere stroke patients (21 F, 27 M; mean

Telemedicine, defined as practicing medicine at a distance, has grown in popularity over the past ten years, as advances in consumer technology have permitted its expansion. Dermatology is a field that especially lends itself to this method of care, as many common dermatological diagnoses can be made upon visual inspection. With social distancing becoming the new standard in this age of COVID-19, telemedicine emerges as a key tool in continuing patient care without interruption. In this pilot study, we examine the reliability of acne vulgaris diagnostic assessments made via patient-taken photo

PURPOSE: Recurrently mutated genes and chromosomal abnormalities have been identified in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). We aim to integrate these genomic features into disease classification and prognostication.
METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 2,043 patients. Using Bayesian networks and Dirichlet processes, we combined mutations in 47 genes with cytogenetic abnormalities to identify genetic associations and subgroups. Random-effects Cox proportional hazards multistate modeling was used for developing prognostic models. An independent validation on 318 cases was performed.
RESULTS: We

Background The present study was undertaken in a borderline personality disorder unit in Cambridge, UK. Our aim was to evaluate patient and staff perspectives on the current risk assessment procedure and to assemble opinions on a proposed change to this procedure. Methodology Structured interviews were conducted with patients and risk-assessing staff. Likert-scale and open questions were asked to gather both quantitative and qualitative data on both the preexisting risk assessment procedure and the proposed change to the procedure. The qualitative data was assembled into key themes. Results Pa

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Accelerometer threshold values to detect physical activity intensity in the oldest old persons with coronary artery disease (CAD) are lacking as well as knowledge about their free-living physical activity behavior. The purpose of this study was 2-fold. (1) To assess the sensitivity and specificity of 3 existing intensity threshold values for ActiGraph accelerometers for the oldest old persons with CAD. (2) To assess free-living physical activity, applying the threshold values with the highest sensitivity and specificity for assessing at least moderate intensity, among t

To facilitate personalized health care for multifactorial diseases, risks of genetic and clinical/environmental factors should be assessed together for each individual in an integrated fashion. This approach is possible with the likelihood ratio (LR)-based risk assessment system, as this system can incorporate manifold tests. We examined the usefulness of this system for assessing type 2 diabetes (T2D). Our system employed 29 genetic susceptibility variants, body mass index (BMI), and hypertension as risk factors whose LRs can be estimated from openly available T2D association data for the Jap

This paper presents an assessment of a lower limb exoskeleton for providing legged mobility to people with paraplegia. In particular, the paper presents a single-subject case study comparing legged locomotion using the exoskeleton to locomotion using knee-ankle-foot orthoses (KAFOs) on a subject with a T10 motor and sensory complete injury. The assessment utilizes three assessment instruments to characterize legged mobility, which are the timed up-and-go test, the Ten-Meter Walk Test (10 MWT), and the Six-Minute Walk Test (6 MWT), which collectively assess the subject's ability to stand, walk,

Reinforcement is a cornerstone for treating adaptive skills and eliminating problem behaviors for persons evincing mental retardation. To effectively use reinforcement, professionals must find reinforcers that are most effective for each individual. Establishing reinforcers is particularly important for persons functioning in the severe and profound ranges of mental retardation as reinforcers are often difficult to identify in this population. The current study aimed at developing a reinforcer rating scale that-would have applicability on a broad clinical basis, looking specifically at the psy
