Melatonin is an important component of the avian circadian system. This study investigates the effects of pinealectomy (Pin-X) and melatonin implantation (Mel) on electroretinogram (ERG) rhythms in chicks. Feeding rhythms were monitored to obtain a phase reference for ERG recordings. Pin-X and Mel had little or no effect on feeding rhythms. Sham-operated Pin-X and vehicle implantation had no effect on ERG rhythms in the light-dark (LD) cycle or constant darkness (DD). In vitro gastric vagal afferents' (GVAs) unit activities were recorded from the ventral GVA nerve strands in rats. The responsiveness of 16 GVA terminals to close intra-arterial injection of vehicle (0.1 ml), leptin (350 pmol), and cholecystokinin (CCK)-8 (10 pmol) was analyzed to generate a spike count-versus-time histogram. The authors describe two cases of allergic contact dermatitis to colophony included in the formulation of flexible collodion BP, the vehicle of a wart paint. Patch and repeated open application tests confirmed absence of contact allergy to other constituents. The patients were known to be allergic to various adhesive plasters. The use of flexible collodion USP, which does not contain colophony, is highly advisable whenever possible.

The supply of ethanol and other substances to the rat has necessitated the development of quite complex dietary preparation and feeding techniques. This study reports the use of ethanol/water solutions in conjunction with normal rat chow diet to provide up to 30 g/kg/day ethanol to study animals. By additionally supplying agar gels containing ethanol, voluntary intake of ethanol was raised to a possible maximum of 48 g/kg/day. Conventional preparations of diazepam for i.v. use contain solvents which cause pain on injection and thrombophlebitis in a high percentage of cases. However, diazepam can be dissolved with advantage in the oleaginous phase of an oil-in-water emulsion (Diazemuls). Diazemuls has been given to 9492 patients without serious side-effects.
