The olive compound 4-hydroxytyrosol inactivates Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and Staphylococcal Enterotoxin A (SEA).

The foodborne pathogen Staphylococcus aureus produces the virulent staphylococcal enterotoxin A (SEA), a single chain protein which consists of 233 amino acid residues with a molecular weight of 27078 Da. SEA is a superantigen that is reported to contribute to animal (mastitis) and human (emesis, diarrhea, atopic dermatitis, arthritis, and toxic shock) syndromes. Changes in the native structural integrity may inactivate the toxin by preventing molecular interaction with cell membrane receptor sites of their host cells. In the present study, we evaluated the ability of the pure olive compound 4

Effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester on cerebral cortex: structural changes resulting from middle cerebral artery ischemia reperfusion.

Overproduction of free radicals is important in the pathogenesis of the cerebral damage induced by ischemia reperfusion. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester, an active component of propolis extract, exhibits antioxidant properties. The study was carried out in 16 male Wistar albino rats, divided into two groups: ischemia reperfusion and ischemia reperfusion with caffeic acid phenethyl ester. The middle cerebral artery was occluded for 60 min with an intraluminal suture, followed by 24-h reperfusion. In this study, widespread infarcted areas, red neurons (eosinophilic degeneration), pyknotic cells, va

Protective effects of caffeic acid phenethyl ester on skeletal muscle ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats.

There is a great evidence that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play an important role in the pathophysiology of ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury in skeletal muscle. Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is a component of honeybee propolis. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and free radical scavenger properties. The aim of this study is to determine the protective effects of CAPE against I/R injury in respect of protein oxidation, neutrophil in filtration, and the activities of xanthine oxidase (XO) and adenosine deaminase (AD) on an in vivo model of skeletal muscle I/R injury. Rats were divid

Beneficial bacterial inoculation modulates hormonal-redox responses associated with enhanced floral volatile biosynthesis in Rosa damascena.

Damask rose (Rosa damascena) is an economically important aromatic crop whose fragrance quality is largely determined by the biosynthesis of floral biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs). Beneficial microorganisms have emerged as sustainable biostimulants for improving plant growth and stress tolerance; however, their influence on floral volatile composition remains insufficiently understood. This study evaluated the effects of inoculation with Bacillus pumilus, Bacillus thuringiensis, and the salt-tolerant bacterium Vibrio campbellii on plant growth, physiological responses, antioxidant-

Navigational Signals for Insect and Slug Parasitic Nematodes: The Role of Ascorbate-Glutathione System and Volatiles Released by Insect-Damaged Sweet Pepper Roots.

This study of underground multitrophic communication, involving plant roots, insects, and parasitic nematodes, is an emerging field with significant implications for understanding plant-insect-nematode interactions. Our research investigated the impact of wireworm (Agriotes lineatus L. [Coleoptera: Elateridae]) infestations on the ascorbate-glutathione system in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) plants in order to study the potential role in root-exudate-mediated nematode chemotaxis. We observed that an A. lineatus infestation led to a decrease in leaf ascorbate levels and an increase in root

Mediterranean diet adherence modulates the plasma antioxidant response to long-term extra-virgin olive oil consumption in older adults.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Phenolic compounds in extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) may improve oxidative status, yet responses may vary across populations and dietary contexts. This study was aimed to evaluate whether long-term consumption of a tyrosol/hydroxytyrosol-enriched EVOO (HP-EVOO) improves plasma total antioxidant capacity (TEAC) in older adults at high cardiovascular risk, and whether baseline adherence to a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) modifies this response. METHODS: In this pilot randomized intervention trial, 34 older adults (73.1 ± 5.9 years; 65% men) stratified as healthy controls or p

Age-dependent osteoprotective effects of hydroxytyrosol acetate: enhanced bone integrity via gut-bone axis activation.

Osteoporosis, a disorder with reduced bone mass and biomechanical properties, poses a geriatric health challenge. Though natural antioxidants like hydroxytyrosol acetate (HT-ac) have diverse regulatory effects, its impact on bone health is underexplored. This study examined HT-ac's age-specific effects on bone health in murine models. Mice were allocated to control and HT-ac groups, with the latter receiving HT-ac for 20 weeks. Assessments included bone density, microarchitecture, and biomechanical evaluation, alongside gut microbiota analysis and detection of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Re

Volatile 2-Phenylethanol and β-Cyclocitral Trigger Defense-Related Transcriptional and Metabolic Changes in Grapevine Leaves Against Downy Mildew.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are produced by grapevine leaves in response to phytopathogen infection. In particular, 2-phenylethanol and β-cyclocitral were triggered by Plasmopara viticola inoculation in downy mildew-resistant genotypes, but no information is available on their involvement in plant resistance induction. This study aimed to clarify transcriptional and metabolic changes associated with VOC-induced resistance activated by 2-phenylethanol and β-cyclocitral treatments against P. viticola. Both VOCs decreased downy mildew severity on grapevine leaf disks by complex reprogrammin

Inhibitory effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester, a plant-derived polyphenolic compound, on rat intestinal contractility.

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) exerts pharmacological actions (e.g. anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive) which are relevant for potential clinical application in the digestive tract. However, no study has been published on its possible effects on intestinal motility, to date. In the present study, we investigated the effect of this plant-derived polyphenolic compound on the spontaneous contractions of the rat isolated ileum. CAPE reduced (in a tetrodotoxin-insensitive manner) spontaneous ileal contractions and this effect was reduced by the L-type Ca2+ channel blocker nifedipine and the ch

Volatile organic compounds from the salt-tolerant Glutamicibacter halophytocola KLBMP 5180 enhance salt stress tolerance in tomato seedlings by regulating antioxidant defense, ion homeostasis, and auxin, jasmonic acid/ethylene signaling pathways.

The application of salt-tolerant plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) represents a promising strategy to alleviate salt stress in crops. However, the mechanisms by which volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from actinomycetes mitigate salinity stress remain unclear. In this study, exposure to VOCs from the halotolerant actinomycete Glutamicibacter halophytocola KLBMP 5180 significantly promotes the growth of tomato seedlings under salt stress, as evidenced by increased fresh weight, lateral root number, and chlorophyll content. Physiological analyses show that VOCs exposure reduces oxidati
