Two patients are described in whom varices in the renal pelves and upper ureters had been demonstrated angiographically. In the patients the varices were due to compression of the renal veins by the superior mesenteric artery. Renal vein varices should be considered as a cause of undiagnosed haematuria and, where necessary, phlebography should be carried out.

A study of 46 patients at different stages of deep-vein thrombosis of the legs, using venous-occlusion plethysmography, doppler ultrasonic flowmetry and radiopaque phlebography, has identified structural and functional mechanisms compensating venous outflow for clinically inapparent nonocclusive thrombosis, acute occlusion of a major venous trunk and post-thrombotic disease.

We experienced 4 patients with total occlusion of the subclavian vein in whom permanent pacemakers were implanted. Occlusion of the subclavian vein was not clinically apparent in these 4 patients. The pacing lead was inserted through the contralateral subclavian vein in a 65-year-old male. In a 80-year-old male, the pacing lead was inserted trough the internal jugular vein because of occlusion of both subclavian veins. The pacing lead was passed through the occluded portion of the innominate vein in a 84-year-old male. Phlebography-guided venipuncture was not difficult in a 79-year-old female

The investigation comprises 19 patients with acute deep vein thrombosis of the leg treated with streptokinase. The acute clinical symptoms rapidly subsided in 15 patients. Phlebography, performed immediately after treatment, revealed complete thrombus regression in 7 cases, restoration of venous flow but remnants of thrombi in 4 and no effect in 7. One woman was not evaluated radiologically due to pregnancy. The phlebographic restoration seemed to be correlated to the duration of the thrombotic symptoms. Follow-up examinations 6-50 months after the thrombotic incident demonstrated normal phleb

The case history of a patient with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) is described. The underlaying disease proved to be essential thrombocytosis. Congential elliptocytosis was also present. The value of the conventional liver scan, percutaneous splenoportoscintigraphy and isotopic phlebography of the inferior vena cava in the diagnosis of BCS is described. It is suggested that a combination of these three noninvasive techniques be used when BCS is suspected.

The superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) is a uncommon complication of thyroid cancers. It is produced as consequence of the mediastinal spread of the tumor or by intravascular invasion with thrombosis. We describe a case of insular thyroid carcinoma with an SVCS solved by putting an intravenous stent. The patient was a 73 year old male that consulted for aphonia and presence of a tumor in the right side of the neck of two months of evolution. The PAAF of thyroid suggested the diagnosis of "follicular tumor". A total thyroidectomy was performed on the patient and the sample histological study re

Problems of resistant thrombolysis and early rethrombosis during and immediately after streptokinase therapy have been studied with sequential phlebography in 39 patients. Early rethrombosis and resistant thrombolysis were found to correlate with the behavior of plasminogen and fibrinogen to streptokinase. Anticoagulants given during streptokinase therapy do not seem to affect these problems in a dramatic way.

A patient with droopy shoulder syndrome (DSS) presented postural symptoms of venous compression of the left upper limb, in addition to those of traction at the brachial plexus. An antegrade phlebography clearly demonstrated impaired patency of the subclavian vein on neck extension. Recognition and management of the compromised venous drainage in patients with DSS is important in preventing vascular complications of the upper limbs.

Two patients with venous obstruction of the arm are reported. Obstruction in one patient was caused by a congenital web of the subclavian vein, in the second by granulomatous thrombophlebitis of the brachiocephalic vein. Both patients were successfully treated by operation. All obstructive symptoms subsided completely. Control phlebography one week and three months postoperatively showed patent reconstructions.

OBJECTIVE: To study the effect of coil embolization of the insufficient ovarian vein (IOV) on varices of the lower limb (VLL).
METHOD: From December 2005 until May 2008, we selected all patients with phlebograms that were performed in our hospital to confirm the diagnosis of insufficiency of the ovarian vein. The CEAP (clinical, aetiological, anatomical and pathological elements) classification was used to classify the lower-limb venous disease in each patient. All patients with suspected IOV in combination with VLL underwent a phlebography. If IOV was found, coil embolization of the ovarian

INTRODUCTION: Nutcracker syndrome (NCS) is a rare condition characterized by the entrapment of the left renal vein (LRV) between the superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and the aorta. It was first described in 1950 and the term nutcracker was attributed by de Schepper in 1972.
CLINICAL CASE: A 20-year-old female patient was admitted to the urology department with a history of hematuria and left flank pain. Basic hematuria investigation was inconclusive. Further investigation revealed a nutcracker syndrome on retrograde phlebography. Surveillance was the option first chosen. Three years later and

Four patients exhibiting signs of partial aberrant oculomotor regeneration without a preceding acute third nerve palsy had meningiomas involving the cavernous sinus. Two of the patients had preceding sixth nerve palsies. We propose that slowly progressive primary aberrant oculomotor regeneration is diagnostic of intracavernous meningioma. The best diagnostic studies are orbital phlebography, carotid arteriography, and possibly computerized axial tomography.

A case is described in which deep vein thrombosis of the calf was initially diagnosed on the basis of the clinical signs and the radiofibrinogen uptake in a patient suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. The correct diagnosis of ruptured popliteal cyst was later established by arthrography and phlebography. Attention is drawn to the unreliability of the radiofibrinogen uptake test in the presence of ruptured popliteal cyst and alternative diagnostic methods are discussed.

Between May 1981 and October 1982, 259 varicoceles were identified by phlebography. It was possible to occlude 217 with Varicocid using a percutaneous Seldinger catheterisation technique under local anaesthesia. This method is an alternative to standard surgical techniques and has several advantages. It is cheap, it can be carried out on an out-patient basis, it lacks the risks associated with general anaesthesia and there are few complications.

Diagnosing inflammatory and thrombotic venous diseases by analysing coagulation is difficult because the results obtained with this method are not certain. Not all persons concerned use scintigraphy, the ultrasonic methods, infrared photography and phlebography as routine diagnostic methods. The surest way of diagnosing inflammatory and thrombotic venous diseases is still to bear in mind the limitations and the criteria mentioned and to combine the clinical and paraclinical methods into a diagnostic mosaic.

The authors analysed the results of examination and dynamic follow up (from 2003 to 2011) of twenty-one 15-to-55-year-old male patients presenting with hypoplasia or aplasia of the inferior vena cava. The diagnosis was verified by means of SCT- or MRT-phlebography. The disease was newly diagnosed at the age of 15-55 years (mean 25.9±2.6). The pathology manifested itself as a clinical course of thrombosis of deep veins of lower limbs in 16 (76.2%) patients and by oedema thereof in 5 (23.8%) subjects. Of the 16 patients with symptomatology of deep vein thrombosis, 13 patients had proximal (iliof

Primary hyperaldosteroneism (PHA) is one of the main causes of secondary arterial hypertension (AH). Medical histories of 62 patients with PHA were analyzed. aldosterone-produced adenoma (APA) was diagnosed in 37 (59.7%) patients (all of them were operated), idiopathic hyperaldosteroneism (IHA)--in 25 (40.3%) patients, 11 of them were operated. Complex clinical and instrumental examination (hormonal analysis, USI, CT, MRT, in difficult cases in 35 patients--selective phlebography with blood sampling) was carried out in all the patients. Clinical picture in the majority patients with PHA was un

OBJECTIVES: Duplex ultrasonography performance in detecting embolic foci has not been proven satisfactory compared with phlebography or autopsic findings. In case of suspected pulmonary embolism, the embolic focus is only discovered in 11 to 18% of the cases compared with more than 30% with phlebography. For overt acute pulmonary embolism, the discovery rate is in the 30 to 45% range versus 70 to 80% with phlebography or autopsy findings. This discrepancy might result from the fact that duplex ultrasonographic explorations are generally limited to the deep collectors at the cruropopliteal leve

A patent lumen after deep vein thrombosis can be achieved but at the cost of valve destruction which occurs in 50 to 75% of the cases within 6 to 12 months after the thrombotic event. The diagnosis of post-thrombotic valve destruction is made on the basis of direct consequences of venous back flow. Photoplethysmographic measurement of venous filling pressure while walking or after a Valsava manoeuvre lacks specificity and is insufficiently sensitive, especially in case of minimal back flow. Retrograde femoral phlebography can miss distal back flow if the femoral valves functions correctly. Dyn

PURPOSE: The venous filling index (VFI) was introduced as a noninvasive measure of venous valvular reflux. Because it is quantitative, identifying increasingly severe reflux should be possible. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the sensitivity and predictive value of the VFI as a predictor of phlebographically demonstrated "critical" venous reflux.
METHODS: Thirty-one limbs with suspected venous insufficiency underwent both descending phlebography and air plethysmography. Nine limbs had deep venous reflux ending above the knee on descending phlebography (group 1), and 22 limbs had "cri
