Photoperiodic regulation of gene expression in brown and white adipose tissue of Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus).

Siberian hamsters exhibit seasonal fluctuations in white adipose tissue (WAT) mass, with peaks in long "summerlike" days (LDs) and nadirs in short "winterlike" days (SDs). These responses can be mimicked in the laboratory after transfer from LDs to SDs. The purpose of the present study was to test whether changes in WAT and brown adipose tissue (BAT) gene expression that are mediated by the sympathetic nervous system in other obesity models are also associated with seasonal adiposity changes in Siberian hamsters. SDs decreased WAT mass and leptin mRNA, increased WAT beta(3)-adrenoceptor mRNA,

Photoperiodic information acquired and stored in vivo is retained in vitro by a circadian oscillator, the avian pineal gland.

Endogenous circadian rhythms have been described in a wide range of organisms from prokaryotes to man. Although basic circadian mechanisms at the molecular level are genetically fixed, certain properties of circadian rhythms at the organismic level can be modified by environmental conditions and subsequently retained for some time, even in organisms shielded from 24-hr environmental variations. To investigate the capacity of animals to acquire and store photoperiodic information, we examined activity and melatonin rhythms in house sparrows during synchronization to two different photoperiods a…

On the primary functions of melatonin in evolution: mediation of photoperiodic signals in a unicell, photooxidation, and scavenging of free radicals.

Melatonin is widely abundant in many eukaryotic taxa, including various animal phyla, angiosperms, and unicells. In the bioluminescent dinoflagellate Gonyaulax polyedra, melatonin is produced in concentrations sometimes exceeding those found in the pineal gland, exhibits a circadian rhythm with a pronounced nocturnal maximum, and mimics the short-day response of asexual encystment. Even more efficient as a cyst inducer is 5-methoxyptryptamine (5MT), which is also periodically formed in Gonyaulax. In this unicell, the photoperiodic signal-transduction pathway presumably involves melatonin forma…

Control of secretory lipid droplets in the harderian gland by testosterone and the photoperiod: comparison of two species of hamsters.

Harderian glands of mammals secrete lipid. They are markedly sexually dimorphic in Syrian (golden) hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus): female g … these two species, in relation to the presence or absence of testosterone and to variations in the photoperiod. In Syrian hamsters, orchidectomy led to a marked increase in the proportion of type 1 lipid droplets in males kept in long (but not short) day photoperiods. In contrast, treatment of females with testosterone led to an increase in type 2 lipid drop …

The cAMP signaling pathway mediates photoperiod-induced follicle development in striped hamsters (Cricetulus barabensis) supported by association analyses.

BACKGROUND: Rodents represent one of the key functional groups in ecosystems, and their population outbreaks can disrupt ecological equilibrium and cause substantial economic losses in agricultural production. Therefore, rational control of rodent populations is essential for maintaining ecosystem stability and minimizing economic damage. The striped hamster displays marked seasonal reproductive patterns, leading to significant fluctuations in population size across seasons. Investigating how female striped hamsters regulate follicle development in response to photoperiodic cues offers a promi…

Peri-Pubertal Height Shifts and Stable Photoperiod-Associated Geographic Patterning Before and After COVID-19 in Japanese Children.

OBJECTIVES: Geographic variation in child body size in Japan has previously been associated with effective day length, a light-related measure. We tested whether this prefecture-level geographic structure remained stable across the COVID-19-related disruption. METHODS: We conducted a prefecture-level ecological analysis using repeated cross-sectional summaries from Japan's School Health Statistics. For each sex and single-year age from 5 to 17 years, we compared a pre-pandemic baseline (2017-2019 mean) with a post-disruption period (2024-2025 mean). Effective day length above 5000 lx (ED5000)

Molecular regulatory mechanisms of Populus deltoides under combined high temperature and short-photoperiod stress associated with DNA methylation.

Populus deltoides is a key species for industrial timber and ecological construction in temperate regions, where increasingly frequent and p … ethylation appears to represent a general response of P. deltoides under high-temperature and short-photoperiod (HS) stress, potentially regulating the expression of 56 genes to activate Ca2+ influx and heat shock proteins, repressing auxin, cytokinin, and cell cycle pathways, thereby initiating stress-protective responses. Neuroendocrine transcriptomics in Eriocheir sinensis: Photoperiod-induced modulation of gonadal development and circadian clock genes in neural tissues.

Photoperiod is a critical environmental cue that orchestrates reproductive physiology and circadian biology in crustaceans, yet the neural gene networks linking photoperiod to ovarian maturation and clock regulation remain largely unknown. To elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying photoperiod regulation of ovarian development and associated circadian rhythmicity, the eyestalk (SG) and brain ganglion (BG) of female Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) from two photoperiod groups (Light (L): Dark (D) = 0 h: 24 h (L0) and L: D = 18 h: 6 h (L18)) were used for transcriptome analysis. Diet/photoperiod mediated changes in cerebellar clock genes causes locomotor shifts and imperative changes in BDNF-TrkB pathway.

Neuropsychological studies report anxiety and depression like symptoms in patients suffering from lifestyle disorder but its impact on locomotor function lacks clarity. Our study investigates locomotor deficits resulting due to perturbations in cerebellum of high fat diet (HFD), chronodisruption (CD) or a combination (HCD) model of lifestyle disorder. Significant downregulation in levels of cerebellar clock genes (Bmal-1, Clock, Per 1 and Per 2) and Bdnf-Trkb pathway genes (Bdnf, TrkB and Syn1 levels) were recorded. Further, locomotor deficits were observed in all the three experimental groups

Perinatal Photoperiod Has Long-Term Effects on the Rest-Activity Cycle and Sleep in Male and Female Mice.

Environmental light conditions during development can have long-lasting effects on the physiology and behavior of an animal. Photoperiod, a clear example of environmental light conditions, is detected by and coded in the suprachiasmatic nucleus. It is therefore possible that differences observed in behavior in adulthood after exposure to different perinatal photoperiods are caused by lasting changes in the suprachiasmatic nucleus or alternatively, in other nuclei affected by perinatal photoperiod. It can then be expected that behavior with strong circadian aspects, like rest-activity and sleep…

Concurrent changes in photoperiod-induced seasonal phenotypes and hypothalamic CART peptide-containing systems in night-migratory redheaded buntings.

This study tested the hypothesis whether hypothalamic cocaine-and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART)-containing systems were involved in photoperiod-induced responses associated with spring migration (hyperphagia and weight gain) and reproduction (gonadal maturation) in migratory songbirds. We specifically chose CART to examine neural mechanism(s) underlying photoperiod-induced responses, since it is a potent anorectic neuropeptide and involved in the regulation of changes in the body mass and reproduction in mammals. We first studied the distribution of CART-immunoreactivity in the hypot…

Effects of hypothyroidism on gonadal function after transition of short day photoperiod in male golden hamsters (Mesocricetus auratus).

Thyroid hormones permit the annual reproductive transition of seasonal breeders. Although, precise function of thyroid hormones in seasonal breeding is not well understood. In the present study, we examined effects of hypothyroidism on the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal axis in adult male golden hamsters after transition of the short-day photoperiod (SD; 8 h light: 16 h dark) condition. We confirmed that hypothyroid, which had been induced by administration of thiouracil in drinking water for 4 weeks, did not have direct effects on testes in male hamsters under the long-day photoperiod. Plasma…

Beta-adrenergic blockers prevent short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression, but not melatonin-induced regression in male Syrian hamsters.

Pineal melatonin synthesis is regulated by norepinephrine at beta-adrenergic receptors on pinealocytes. Melatonin released from the pineal is believed to be responsible for short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression. By blocking melatonin production at the beta-adrenergic receptor with beta-adrenergic antagonists, short photoperiod-induced gonadal regression was prevented. Propranolol or nadolol injected daily in the late afternoon prohibited short photoperiod-produced testicular regression in male Syrian hamsters. Likewise, propranolol and nadolol pellets were able to block short photoperio…

Photoperiod-induced diapause in a North Carolina strain of Aedes sollicitans: photosensitivity of fully formed and developing embryos.

The role of photoperiod in the induction of diapause in eggs laid by field-collected adult Aedes sollicitans mosquitoes was examined at different temperatures. Short-day photoperiods induced a much higher incidence of diapause at 15 degrees than at 22 degrees C, whether eggs were 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 days old postoviposition on exposure. A 6-week exposure to a 6:18 to 10:14 (L:D) photoperiod at 15 degrees caused 87-100% of the eggs tested to enter diapause. The diapause incidence was significantly different for 0- to 5-day-old eggs subjected to a 10:14 photoperiod at 15 degrees and to a combinat…

The effects of castration, testosterone replacement and photoperiod upon hypothalamic beta-endorphin levels in the male Syrian hamster.

Syrian hamsters kept in long day-lengths have active gonads and high circulating levels of gonadal steroids. Under the influence of the pineal gland, animals exposed to short photoperiods undergo testicular regression, have low circulating levels of testosterone and gonadotrophins and elevated levels of beta-endorphin within the hypothalamus. This paper describes the interaction between testosterone and photoperiod in the regulation of beta-endorphin levels in three regions of the hypothalamus. Hypothalamic beta-endorphin levels were measured by a combination of high-performance liquid chromat…

Influence of photoperiod and temperature on weight gain, food consumption, fat pads and thyroxine in male golden hamsters.

Weight gain in control and pinealectomized male golden hamsters is enhanced by exposure to short photoperiods (LD 8:16). Modest temperature reductions (10 degrees C) enhanced weight gain also, especially in the blinded animals. In the absence of both eyes and the pineal gland, neither temperature nor photoperiod had much or any effect on weight gain. Food consumption on the other hand increased only as a consequence of lowered temperature. Efficiency of food utilization was maximal at higher (22 degrees C) temperature and long photoperiods (LD 16:8). Epididymal fat pads in control animals were…

Photoperiod modulation and hormonal application influence flowering, agronomic, morphological and tuber quality traits in greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.).

INTRODUCTION: Greater yam (Dioscorea alata L.) is a vital staple crop in tropical regions, yet its genetic improvement is severely hampered by poor, irregular, or non-flowering in many genotypes. This flowering recalcitrance creates a major bottleneck for conventional breeding. This study aimed to develop methods for flowering induction in D. alata using photoperiod modulation and hormonal applications, and to evaluate the resulting agronomic, morphological and tuber-quality responses. METHOD: Over two consecutive seasons, thirteen genotypes with varying flowering abilities were subjected to …
