PURPOSE: This study evaluates the function of the retina according to multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and its light sensitivity according to microperimetry (MP) in patients with thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) associated with malignant hypertension (MH).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study analyzed mfERG and MP data of 20 patients (40 eyes) aged 40.4±7.4 years (18 men, 2 women) with MH-associated TMA. In all patients TMA of the kidneys was verified by nephrobiopsy. The control group consisted of 20 healthy individuals (40 eyes) of the appropriate age.

Roofers working with coal-tar pitch develop burning eyes and conjunctivitis which they subjectively associate with sun exposure. A coal-tar pitch distillate instilled in the conjunctivae of rabbits produced minimal or mild irritation in the absence of ultraviolet radiation, but irradiation with long-ultraviolet produced marked photophobia and severe keratoconjunctivitis.

A 69-year-old male dentist in Caracas, Venezuela, was referred to our Cornea Clinic with a history of pain, photophobia, and blurred vision on his left eye. Routine biomicroscopic examination with a slit lamp showed a worm in the corneal stroma of his left eye. The worm was surgically removed and was identified morphologically as Gnathostoma binucleatum.

A human immunodeficiency virus-negative 63-year-old male with autoimmune hemolytic anemia presented with decreased vision, photophobia and hearing loss. After initial testing seemed consistent with sarcoidosis, he was found to have disseminated Cryptococcus with a cryptococcoma of the left eye. Treatment with systemic anti-fungal therapy improved the patient's condition.

An unusual case of entropion, corneal ulcer and corneal haemorrhages in a one-humped camel (Camelus dromedaries) is described. The most prominent clinical findings were entropion of both eyelids, severe blephrospasm, epiphora, conjunctivitis, conjunctival oedema, mucopurulent conjunctival discharges, hyperaemia, lacrimation and photophobia. Corneal ulcers and corneal haemorrhages were also observed.

BACKGROUND: Pupil distortion and aphakia are common complications that follow blunt injury of the eye globe, surgical complications, and iris coloboma.
