Albinism includes a group of genetic disorders with decreased pigmentation. Eye defects include foveal hypoplasia and misrouting of retinal nerve impulses. The primary concerns of those with albinism are low vision and societal misconceptions, which can also lead to social and emotional problems. Persons with albinism can live fairly normal lives when they have appropriate support and resources, including low vision rehabilitation.

OBJECTIVE: Solar lentigines and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) are common pigmentation disorders, and they are usually differentiated by a trained dermatologist. Accurate identification of the spot type is essential for providing patients with the most appropriate skin treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of hyperspectral imaging (HSI) in characterizing and discriminating solar lentigines from PIH, that is, to identify the colorimetric features and chromophore concentrations associated with each pigmentation disorder.
METHODS: Acquisition of HSI was perform…

BACKGROUND: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) promote melanogenesis through activating NLRP3 inflammasome in fibroblasts. Although A20 h … CONCLUSIONS: Fibroblast A20 suppresses AGEs-stimulate melanogenesis in photoaging-associated hyperpigmentation disorders by inhibiting NLRP3 inflammasome activation.

INTRODUCTION: Release of pigments in the anterior chamber is frequently observed in pigment dispersion syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder marked by bilateral pigment deposition on the anterior and possibly posterior lens capsule, zonules of the lens, trabecular meshwork, and corneal endothelium, in addition to radial, spoke-like transillumination defects in the mid peripheral iris [J Ayub Med Coll Abbottabad. 2017;29(3):412-414 and Optom Vis Sci. 1995;72(10):756-762]. Pigmentation of the anterior lens surface has also been associated with intraocular inflammation, pseudoexfoliation syndr

BACKGROUND: During aging, human skin is facing hyperpigmentation disorders: senile lentigo (chronobiologic aging) leads to loss of melanogenesis' control while solar lentigo (UV exposure) promotes an increase of oxidized proteins, melanogenesis, and lipofuscin.
AIMS: Stromal-cell-derived-factor-1 (SDF-1) was identified as key regulator of hyperpigmentation and its expression is reduced in senescent fibroblasts, highlighting this protein as new target for skin hyperpigmentation.
MATERIALS: We developed two skin explant models mimicking of senile and solar lentigo, based on H2 O2 systemic trea…

Pigmented purpuric dermatosis (PPD) is a group of chronic disorders characterized by the extravasation of erythrocytes and marked hemosiderin deposits in the dermis. Schamberg disease is a subtype of pigmented purpuric dermatosis in which nonpalpable purpura is prominent on the lower extremities. No cases of primary antiphospholipid syndrome and pigmented purpuric dermatosis have so far been reported in the literature. We herein report a case of pigmented purpuric dermatosis associated with primary antiphospholipid syndrome.

Black and brown pigmentation of the oral mucosa can occur due to a multitude of non-neoplastic causes. Endogenous or exogenous pigments may be responsible for oral discoloration which can range from innocuous to life-threatening in nature. Physiologic, reactive, and idiopathic melanin production seen in smoker's melanosis, drug-related discolorations, melanotic macule, melanoacanthoma and systemic diseases are presented. Exogenous sources of pigmentation such as amalgam tattoo and black hairy tongue are also discussed. Determining the significance of mucosal pigmented lesions may represent a d

We herein illustrate a case of an adult male presenting with silvery hair and generalized guttate hypopigmented macules on a background of diffuse cutaneous hyperpigmentation, since birth. Histopathology showed enlarged melanocytes with abundant melanin. Based on these clinicopathological features, differential diagnoses considered were Griscelli syndrome 3 (GS3) and familial giagantic melanocytosis. GS3 belongs to a group of inherited autosomal recessive (AR) disorders of partial albinism, known as silvery hair syndromes, while familial gigantic melanocytosis (FGM) is a putative disorder of d

The diagnosis of skin diseases relies on several clinical signs, among which color is of paramount importance. In this review, we consider certain clinical presentations of both eczematous and noneczematous contact dermatitis in which color plays a peculiar role orientating toward the right diagnosis. The conditions that will be discussed include specific clinical-morphologic subtypes of eczematous contact dermatitis, primary melanocytic, and nonmelanocytic contact hyperchromia, black dermographism, contact chemical leukoderma, and others. Based on the physical, chemical, and biologic factors

BACKGROUND: Blue light from electronic devices enriched with a peak at 456 nm affects circadian rhythm and antioxidant balance of skin, necessitating the study of photoprotection against the 456-nm blue light.
AIMS: This study aims to report that blue light (456 nm) can cause skin pigmentation and proposes a new clinical evaluation method for blue light (456 nm) protection based on the skin pigmentation level.
PATIENTS/METHODS: We developed a clinical device (ABC deviceTM ) that emits blue light (peak = 456 nm). Based on the minimal persistent pigment darkening dose (MPPD) determined from vi
