Plants Causing Toxic Myopathies.

Boxelder and sycamore maple contain hypoglycin A (HGA), the toxic metabolite of which, MCPA-CoA, inhibits fatty acid β-oxidation, causing seasonal pasture myopathy (SPM) or atypical myopathy (AM), respectively. White snakeroot and rayless goldenrod contain multiple benzofuran ketones (BFKs). The identity/toxicity of BFKs appear variable, possibly involving interactions between toxins/toxic metabolites, but ultimately inhibit cellular energy metabolism. Unthrifty horses grazing sparse pastures during the fall appear predisposed to these plant-associated, frequently fatal, toxic myopathies. Toxi

Senecio spp poisoning in cattle in southern Brazil.

Epidemiological, clinical, necropsy and histopathological data were accumulated during the study of 15 outbreaks of Senecio spp poisoning in cattle occurring during the last 3 y in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Morbidity averaged 17% and mortality was virtually 100%. The peak mortality occurred during spring and early summer. The most constant clinical signs included anorexia, depression, tenesmus often followed by rectal prolapse, and rough hair coat. Affected animals remained apart from the rest of the herd, lost weight, presented ascites, and had signs of digestive and neurologica

Oak (Quercus rubor)poisoning in cattle.

Two outbreaks of oak poisoning in cattle in the Republic of South Africa are described. In the first outbreak 22 out of 80 head of cattle were severely affected while 40 out of a herd of 135 cattle were affected in the second outbreak. Of these 40, only one survived after 9 months despite vigorous treatment. Only young cattle under 2 years were affected during both outbreaks in spite of an average herd age of approximately 6 years in the second group of cattle. Clinical signs included severe weakness with a swaying gait, diarrhoea and dehydration. Some were pot bellied while others were emacia

Urushiol Patch Test Using the T.R.U.E. TEST System.

BACKGROUND: Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac are the most common causes of allergic contact dermatitis in North America. Although extensive efforts have been made to develop therapies that prevent and treat allergic contact dermatitis to these plants, there lacks an entirely effective method, besides complete avoidance. Efforts to develop a more effective preventive therapy, such as a vaccine, are ongoing. To accurately evaluate the efficacy of these new therapies, an appropriate assessment tool is needed. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and appropriate dos

Suspected cyanide toxicity in cattle associated with ingestion of laurel - a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cyanide is one of the most rapidly acting toxins affecting cattle, with poisoning typically occurring following ingestion of cya … ich subsequently died. CONCLUSIONS: The large fatality rate serves as a timely reminder to include plant poisoning as a differential diagnosis when dealing with large numbers of rapid fatalities. Failure to thoroughly examine rumen contents and collect a detailed history in this case, could easily have allowed death to be attributed to other causes and the invol …

Patterns of acute poisoning for children during outbreak of Corona virus in Makkah region Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Poisoning occurs when a person is exposed to an external substance at a too high dose for them. It is possible for young children to be exposed to chemicals. Lungs, the heart, CNS, the digestive tract, and kidneys can be poisoned. In 2004, over 45,000 children and teenagers died from acute poisoning, representing 13% of all accidental poisoning deaths worldwide. Poisoning patterns vary by exposure type, age group, poison type, and dose. AIM: This study assessed the pattern of acute poisoning with drugs, chemicals, and natural toxins among children (<12 years old). The study was do

Acute renal failure induced by bentazone: 2 case reports and a comprehensive review.

Bentazone is a herbicide widely used in the agrochemical field and acts by interference in photosynthesis in plants. Case reports of bentazone poisoning in humans are rare, but hepatorenal damage and death have been described, though the mechanism of toxicity remains speculative. We describe 2 cases of acute bentazone poisoning and compare these with other literature reports. The clinical picture included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain with gastrointestinal corrosive injury, dyspnea and acute hepatorenal dysfunction. Respiratory failure, acute hepatitis, acute renal failure requiri

Acute oral toxicity of sodium cyanide in birds.

Sensitivities of six avian species, black vulture (Coragyps atratus), American kestrel (Falco sparverius), Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica), domestic chicken (Gallus domesticus), eastern screech-owl (Otus asio), and European starling (Sturnus vulgaris), to acute poisoning by sodium cyanide (NaCN) were compared by single dose LD50's. Three species, domestic chickens, black vultures, and turkey vultures (Cathartes aura), were dosed with NaCN to determine cyanide residues in those that died and also in survivors, in addition to postmortem fate. Three flesh-eating species (black vulture, America

Old poisons, new signaling molecules: the case of hydrogen cyanide.

The high phenotypic plasticity developed by plants includes rapid responses and adaptations to aggressive or changing environments. To achieve this, they evolved extremely efficient mechanisms of signaling mediated by a wide range of molecules, including small signal molecules. Among them, hydrogen cyanide (HCN) has been largely ignored due to its toxic characteristics. However, not only is it present in living organisms, but it has been shown that it serves several functions in all kingdoms of life. Research using model plants has changed the traditional point of view, and it has been demonst

Suspected avocado (Persea americana) poisoning in goats.

A herd of 15 Cameroon goats was suspected of having been poisoned by eating leaves of the Fuerte variety of avocado pear (Persea americana). Two of the affected goats were examined clinically, while necropsies were carried out on 3 of the 4 that had died. The most significant clinical findings were tachycardia, hyperpnoea and evidence of lung oedema. At necropsy severe lung oedema, hydrothorax and hydropericardium were present. Severe myocardial degeneration, necrosis and fibrosis were the major histopathological findings.

[Contact allergy caused by poison ivy (Toxicodendron spp].

Within 3 days two female patients presented with an eruption featuring erythema, edema, vesicles and bullae. We suspected poison ivy allergy which was subsequently proven by history and positive patch tests. In Germany the risk of specific hypersensitivity to Toxicodendron species is low, since the distribution of such plants is confined to botanical gardens. Other species belonging to the family of Anacardiaceae contain urushiols as well (e.g., mango, cashew) and may cause allergic contact dermatitis.

[Mycotoxins as a cause of disease in human beings].

Secondary metabolites, toxic to macro-organisms and micro-organisms, are produced by certain molds and some plant parasitic living fungi. A risk is given for man worldwide by ingestion or apparently also be other routes always undetected. In vivo-effects of the various mycotoxins are different, but mainly the liver is affected, expecially by the intake of smaller amounts of these poisons. Accordingly cirrhosis of the liver or primary liver carcinoma are expected in man as well as in animals and were already proved outside of Europe.

Acute poisoning due to ingestion of Datura stramonium - a case report.

Datura stramonium (DS) is a widespread annual plant, containing atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine, which can produce poisoning with a severe anticholinergic syndrome. Teenagers ingest the roots, seeds or the entire plant to obtain its hallucinogenic and euphoric effects. We presented the case of a 22 year old male who was admitted to the Emergency Room in a coma after consuming Datura stramonium, 2 hours earlier. The patient presented with fever, tachycardia with right bundle branch block, and urinary retention. Rapid sequence induction and intubation was performed immediately, with sedat

Herbicide poisoning referrals to an Australian State Poisons Information Centre: a retrospective case series.

INTRODUCTION: Herbicides are chemicals used to control weeds and plants. Globally, herbicide exposures are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. However, the Australian experience is not well understood. We aimed to characterize herbicide exposures to an Australian State Poisons Centre. METHODS: This is a retrospective series of all herbicide exposures referred to the Queensland Poisons Information Centre from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2023. Data regarding demographics, exposure details and clinical features were retrieved from the unit database. RESULTS: There were 1,833

[Acute intoxication in adults - what you should know].

Ingestion of household products and plants are the leading cause for calls to the poison control centres as far as children are involved. Severe intoxication in children has become infrequent due to childproofed package and blister packs for drugs. Chemical accidents in adults give rise to hospital admission in only 5 %. Suicidal selfpoisonings are still a challenge for paramedics, emergency and hospital doctors. Natural toxins as amatoxins, cholchicine and snakebites can lead to severe intoxication. Sedatives, antidepressants and analgesics are the drugs which are often used for suicidal inte

Potential Toxicity of Medicinal Plants Inventoried in Northeastern Morocco: An Ethnobotanical Approach.

Herbal medicine and its therapeutic applications are widely practiced in northeastern Morocco, and people are knowledgeable about it. Nonetheless, there is a significant knowledge gap regarding their safety. In this study, we reveal the toxic and potential toxic species used as medicines by people in northeastern Morocco in order to compile and document indigenous knowledge of those herbs. Structured and semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, and simple random sampling was used as a sampling technique. Based on this information, species were collected, identified, and herbarium

Monitoring CO as a plant signaling molecule under heavy metal stress using carbon nanodots.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is widely recognized as a significant environmental pollutant and is associated with numerous instances of accidental poisoning in humans. However, it also serves a pivotal role as a signaling molecule in plants, exhibiting functions analogous to those of other gaseous signaling molecules, including nitric oxide (NO) and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). In plant physiology, CO is synthesized as an integral component of the defense mechanism against oxidative damage, particularly under abiotic stress conditions such as drought, salinity, and exposure to heavy metals. Current researc

"Mad honey and the heart: a case report of transient bradycardia and hypotension from Nepal".

BACKGROUND: Consuming honey contaminated with grayanotoxins, which are derived from specific Rhododendron species (known locally as Laliguras) found in Nepal’s hilly and Himalayan regions, can result in mad honey poisoning. There are plants with high concentrations of Grayanotoxin in a number of places across the world, including Brazil, Japan, Nepal, Turkey, and North America. CASE PRESENTATION: We documented a case of a 59-year-old male exhibiting acute nausea, recurrent vomiting, dizziness, hypotension (BP 60/40 mmHg), and bradycardia (42 bpm) approximately 60–80 min following the consumpti
