Utilization of Swertia chirayita Plant Extracts for Management of Diabetes and Associated Disorders: Present Status, Future Prospects and Limitations.

Diabetes mellitus is referred as common metabolic abnormalities characterized as hyperglycemia, mainly caused due to insufficient production of insulin at cellular level or/and defects in insulin action. Such an endocrine disorder is responsible for serious health problems and its worldwide prevalence is rapidly increasing. Common management of diabetes by oral administration of drugs without creating any side effects is still considered a challenging task and increasing cost of conventional medicine in developing countries is another matter of concern. To address these issues, traditional pre

Antimalarial plants with potential male-factor antifertility properties.

Malaria, caused mainly by Plasmodium falciparum among other Plasmodium species, is one of the main causes of death from parasitic diseases. Malaria is still a health problem mainly because of the cost of effective antimalarial drugs and the growing parasite resistance to conventional antimalarial drugs, making a great proportion of the people in malaria endemic countries dependent on plants for its treatment. Corollary, a large number of the rural populations consume antimalarial herbal preparations in large or excessive quantities despite the fact that it has been reported that some of them c

Acute Toxicity by Salvia Officinalis: A Rare Cause of Intestinal Sub-Occlusion.

Salvia officinalis is a perennial plant commonly used in culinary and medical preparations. Its large intake is usually related to psychiatric disorders (such as pica) and might induce different symptoms (e.g. vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, salivation, arterial hypertension, tachycardia, vertigo, flushes, cyanosis and convulsions) likely ascribable to pro-cholinergic effects of various constituents. The identification of this toxicity is challenging because of its rarity and possible underlying psychiatric comorbidities. Herein we describe the case of a schizophrenic 56-year-old male admitted to

Evidence for the efficacy and safety of topical herbal drugs in dermatology: Part I: Anti-inflammatory agents.

Topical herbal drugs have for centuries been used for treating skin ailments. Although they are currently widely accepted by patients, their scientific esteem among dermatologists in particular is limited. A variety of herbal drugs for topical application deserves consideration regarding their widespread use or their still ill-defined potential with respect to their benefit/risk ratio. Clinically, camomile (Chamomilla recutita) and hamamelis preparations look particularly well documented. While the final proof of efficacy in common dermatoses such as atopic dermatitis is still lacking, there i

[The antibacterial activity of preparations with highly dispersed iron].

High-dispersed magnetized iron preparations of various coercive force and its preparations with Ag, Au, Pt obtained by thermochemical method have been studied for their effect on plants and bacteria pathogenic for animals. It is established that magnetized iron intensifies antibacterial effect of certain metals. Of the studied preparations only high-dispersed Fe-Ag had distinctly expressed bactericidal effect. Other preparations had weak antibacterial effect or had not it at all. All the preparations have strong adsorption capacity.

High-throughput direct profiling of natural products in plant leaves using ambient ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Plant leaves contain natural products that may have nutritional and medicinal values. In this work, a modified ambient ion source of angled direct analysis in real time (aDART) and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) was used for direct surface analysis of different plant leaves. Untreated leaves, leaves with the wax layer removed, and leaf imprints were all successfully analyzed by aDART-HRMS in min, observing abundant natural product information including esters, amino acids, saccharides, flavonoids, alkaloids, alcohols, and ketones/aldehydes. Different plant samples have their unique f

The enzymatic hydrolysate of fucoidan from Sargassum hemiphyllum triggers immunity in plants.

Fucoidans are polysaccharides that consist predominantly of sulfated L-fucoses, from which, fucoidan oligosaccharides (FOSs) are prepared through different methods. Fucoidan has versatile physiological activities, like antiviral functions against SARS CoV-2 and bioactivitiy in enhancing immune responses. Although fucoidan or FOS has been widely used in mammals as functional foods and new drugs, its application in plants is still very limited. Moreover, whether fucoidan or its derived hydrolytic products can trigger immune responses in plants remained unknown. In this work, we demonstrate that

Fermentation and subsequent disposition of 14C-labelled plant cell wall material in the rat.

A 14C-labelled plant cell wall preparation (14C-PCW) produced from spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) cell culture exhibits uniform labelling of the major polysaccharide groups (%): pectins 53, hemicellulose 13, cellulose 21, starch 3. This 14C-PCW preparation has been used in rat studies as a marker for plant cell wall metabolism. Metabolism of the 14C-PCW occurred largely over the first 24 h. This was due to fermentation in the caecum. The pectic fraction of the plant cell walls was degraded completely in the rat gastrointestinal tract, but some [14C]cellulose was still detected after 24 h in th
