Short single-wedge stems have higher risk of periprosthetic fracture than other cementless stem designs in Dorr type A femurs: a finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of total hip arthroplasty (THA) femoral stems that transmit force in a favourable manner to the femur may minimise periprosthetic fractures. Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computerised method that analyses the effect of forces applied to a structure with complex shape. Our aim was to apply FEA to compare primary THA cementless stem designs and their association with periprosthetic fracture risk. METHODS: 3-dimensional (3D) models of a Dorr Type A femur and 5 commonly used primary THA cementless stem designs (short single wedge, standard-length single wedge, modular, do

Overexpression of an Alfalfa Gene, MsCKX5, Confers Cold Tolerance in Transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana.

BACKGROUND: Cytokinin oxidase/dehydrogenase (CKX) can irreversibly degrade cytokinin, regulating the growth and development of plants and helping them cope with environmental stress. METHODS: To understand the expression characteristics and the biological functions of CKX in alfalfa (Medicago sativa), a novel gene, designated as MsCKX5 (GenBank: PV934228), was cloned, characterized and overexpressed in Arabidopsis thaliana. RESULTS: qRT-PCR results showed that MsCKX5 gene expression was clearly tissue-specific and had the highest expression level in the stems. In addition, the expression lev

Exploration of cassava plant xylem for water treatment: preparation, characterization and filtration capability.

Flood is among the natural disasters that commonly happened in Malaysia every year. During the flood, victims faced clean water shortages and deterioration of the environment resulting in long waiting times for aid to access. Hence, affordable and efficient filters are needed to supply clean water in the affected areas. Application of xylem tissue inside plant stem has the potential as a filter for water filtration. This research focuses on xylem tissue in Malaysian tropical plants from cassava stem. Cassava stems were prepared in a small-scale set-up as the xylem was used as a filter. Effects

A Constitutively Active Cytokinin Receptor Variant Increases Cambial Activity and Stem Growth in Poplar.

The cambial meristem is responsible for bark and wood formation in woody plants. The activity of the cambial meristem is controlled by various factors; one of them is the plant hormone cytokinin. Here, we have explored different approaches to genetically engineering cambial activity in poplar plants by the ectopic expression of a cytokinin biosynthesis gene with enhanced activity (named ROCK4) or of a gene encoding a constitutively active cytokinin receptor variant (ROCK3). Both genes are derived from Arabidopsis thaliana and were expressed in poplar trees under the control of their own promot

Phytoaccumulation of lead by sunflower (Helianthus annuus), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), and vetiver (Vetiveria zizanioides).

The ability of three plant species: Helianthus annuus, Nicotiana tabacum, and Vetiveria zizanioides for phytoaccumulation of Pb was studied. Plants were grown in hydroponic solution containing Pb(NO3)2 at concentration of 0.25 and 2.5 mM Pb in the presence or absence of chelating agents (EDTA or DTPA). Lead (Pb) transport and localization within the tissues of the plant species was determined using scanning electron microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers (SEM-EDS). The addition of chelators increased Pb uptake as compared to plants grown in solution containing Pb alone.

Effect of biofertilizers on leaf yield, nitrate amount, mineral content and antioxidants of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture.

Hydroponics is one of the systems in agriculture which reinforce productivity by controlling environmental and growing conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of three bio-fertilizers, namely bacteria, micro-algae, and mycorrhiza, on basil leaf yield and quality (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture system. Soil has rich amounts of beneficial microorganisms, supporting plant nutrition, producing phytohormones, controlling phytopathogens, and improving soil structure. However, soilless culture usually contains no beneficial microorganisms if we do not include them in the system

Pithy protection: Nicotiana attenuata's jasmonic acid-mediated defenses are required to resist stem-boring weevil larvae.

Folivory is the best studied plant-herbivore interaction, but it is unclear whether the signaling and resistance traits important for the defense of leaves are also important for other plant parts. Larvae of the tobacco stem weevil, Trichobaris mucorea, burrow into stems of Nicotiana attenuata and feed on the pith. Transgenic N. attenuata lines silenced in signaling and foliar defense traits were evaluated in a 2-year field study for resistance against attack by naturally occurring T. mucorea larva. Plants silenced in early jasmonic acid (JA) biosynthesis (antisense [as]-lipoxygenase3 [lox3];

Endophytic fungi from Cissus quadrangularis plant a promising source of bioactive compounds.

Cissus quadrangularis is a succulent, perennial plant belonging to the family Vitaceae typically found in Asia and Africa's tropical and subtropical forest zones. It is an ancient medicinal plant, containing phytosterols, polyphenols, flavonoids, carbohydrates, and ascorbic acid. Due to the presence of phytosterols it plays a crucial role in bone fracture healing. However, due to the limited resources of these medicinal plants there is a need to search for a reservoir of biologically active metabolites. This medicinal property of the plants therefore may be attributed to the endophytic fungi w

First Report of Soybean Neocosmospora Stem Rot Caused by Neocosmospora vasinfecta var. vasinfecta in China.

During October 2009, the occurrence of a disease on soybean (Glycine max) was observed in several fields in Boluo County and Zengcheng City, Guangdong Province. Top leaves of infected plants initially turned yellow and plants eventually were defoliated, while stems and roots became black and rotted. The stem lesions sometimes extended 10 to 15 cm upward from the soil surface. Orange-to-brown spherical fruiting bodies, which were very similar with those of the soybean red crown rot pathogen, scattered or congregated on the stem lesions. Plants with symptoms were sampled from fields. Fruiting bo

Comprehensive Insights into Plant-Derived Bioactive Peptides: Sources, Technological Strategies, and Health Implications.

Interest in sustainable protein sources is increasing because of environmental concerns related to animal agriculture and the growing burden of chronic non-communicable diseases. Plant-derived bioactive peptides (PDBAPs), amino acid sequences released from dietary proteins, are gaining attention because experimental studies have reported activities relevant to hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and cancer-associated processes. Although animal proteins have long been major sources of bioactive peptides, plant materials may offer advantages such as abundance, potentially lower production costs, and

Warm temperature and mild water stress cooperatively promote root elongation.

Warm temperatures have a dramatic effect on plant development. In shoots, stems elongate, and leaves are raised in a developmental program called thermomorphogenesis. This results in enhanced leaf cooling capacity.1 Roots also undergo thermomorphogenesis, but the mechanism by which this occurs is less well understood. Main root elongation is enhanced at warm temperatures, in an autonomous response that likely requires other signaling pathways than those involved in light and temperature signaling of the shoot.2 It was recently speculated that due to the close correlation between warm temperatu

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Profiling of the GATA Gene Family Reveals Candidate Genes Associated with GA3-Induced Shoot Elongation in Citrus grandis 'Wanbai'.

Plant GATA transcription factors are zinc-finger proteins involved in signal transduction, growth and development. However, their potential involvement in plant height and gibberellin-associated shoot growth in pummelo insufficiently characterised. In this study, members of the CgGATA gene family were identified genome-wide and characterised through analyses of physicochemical properties, chromosomal distribution, phylogenetic relationships, gene structures, conserved motifs, collinearity and predicted cis-acting elements in putative upstream regulatory regions. RT-qPCR was used to examine exp

Identification of the DOG1 Gene Family in Cultivated Peanut and Negative Regulation of Ralstonia solanacearum Infection by AhDOG1-L4.

Bacterial wilt, caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, is a devastating soilborne disease often referred to as plant cancer. It threatens hundreds of species of plants and causes losses in yield and a deterioration in the quality of infected plants. Delay of Germination 1 (DOG1) plays vital roles in plant growth, development, and abiotic and biotic stress responses. However, the functions of DOG1 in biotic stress remain unexplored in cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.). In this study, we systematically identified and characterized the AhDOG1 gene family in peanut using bioinformatics approaches

A modified diet to support conservation of the Atala hairstreak butterfly (Eumaeus atala Poey).

Raising insects in a laboratory for release into the wild is a common conservation practice, but maintaining breeding colonies year-round can be limited by seasonal food availability. Food availability is particularly challenging for insects which depend on specific host plants. For example, our early efforts to rear the imperiled Atala hairstreak butterfly (Eumaeus atala Poey) resulted in colony failure during winter due to lack of food. To overcome this barrier, we developed a modified freeze-dried host plant diet to support the colony. The diet consisted of reconstituted freeze-dried leaves

A High-Throughput, Field-Based Phenotyping Technology for Tall Biomass Crops.

Recent advances in omics technologies have not been accompanied by equally efficient, cost-effective, and accurate phenotyping methods required to dissect the genetic architecture of complex traits. Even though high-throughput phenotyping platforms have been developed for controlled environments, field-based aerial and ground technologies have only been designed and deployed for short-stature crops. Therefore, we developed and tested Phenobot 1.0, an auto-steered and self-propelled field-based high-throughput phenotyping platform for tall dense canopy crops, such as sorghum (Sorghum bicolor).

Flavonoid-Rich Cyperus esculentus Extracts Disrupt Cellular and Metabolic Functions in Staphylococcus aureus.

The escalating threat of antibiotic resistance, particularly from Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), has become a critical challenge in both public health and animal husbandry. The extensive use of conventional antibiotics in livestock production accelerates the emergence of resistant strains, heightening risks to food safety and human health. Although plant-derived bioactive compounds are increasingly recognized as promising alternatives to synthetic antimicrobials, the mechanisms underlying their efficacy-and the potential for synergistic action among different plant parts-remain poorly unde

Hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide regulate the adaptation to iron deficiency through affecting Fe homeostasis and thiol redox modification in Glycine max seedlings.

Iron (Fe) is a vital microelement required for the growth and development of plants. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and nitric oxide (NO), as messenger molecules, participated in the regulation of plant physiological processes. Here, we studied the interaction effects of H2S and NO on the adaptation to Fe deficiency in Glycine max L. Physiological, biochemical and molecular approaches were conducted to analyze the role of H2S and NO in regulating the adaptation to Fe deficiency in soybean. We found that H2S and NO had obvious rescuing function on the Fe deficiency-induced the plant growth inhibition,
