Lipid peroxidation was examined in Phaseolus coccineus plants treated with 25 microM Cadmium (Cd) for 12 days at two different growth stages of the primary leaves. The frequencies of chromosome aberrations in 135 workers from nuclear- power plants were compared with those in 135 age-matched controls. A total of 135,000 cells was scored. The frequencies of dicentric chromosome were 1.67 x 10(-3) in the exposed group and 0.49 x 10(-3) in the control group and those of chromosome-type deletion were 3.33 x 10(-3) and 1.10 x 10(-3), respectively. Cutaneous and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis are endemic diseases in South America, especially in the subandean areas of the humid lowlands of Bolivia. Fourteen plants used topically in folk medicine to treat cutaneous leishmaniasis were collected in the tropical regions of colonization and in the rain forest occupied by Chimane Indians. Patients with plant-induced dermatitis frequently present to the emergency department. The range of responses varies from irritant to allergic to photo or granulomatous. To a certain extent the clinical presentations will vary; it is important to determine causation because appropriate emergency therapy treatment also will vary. This review considers the most common forms of plant dermatitis and emphasizes advances in the understanding of pathomechanisms and recommended therapy for each type.

This is a five year study of types of lost-time industrial injuries in a plant dealing with paper manufacturing and timber production. Back injuries accounted for 26% of all lost-time work accidents. Thirty-three point six percent of all back injuries were due to lifting or pulling of timbers at work. This occurred mainly in the timber yard of the plant where heavy manual work occurred.
