A Primer for Radiation Oncologists on Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery: Key Concepts and Principles.

AIMS: Interdisciplinary collaboration is crucial in modern medicine to enhance patient outcomes. As radiation oncology and plastic surgery continue to advance, radiation oncologists must understand plastic surgery principles to improve decision-making and patient care. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This primer article outlines key plastic surgery concepts relevant to radiation oncologists. It reviews principles of tissue healing, reconstructive surgical options, and the interaction between plastic surgery techniques and radiation treatments based on the existing literature. RESULTS: We describe var

Nebuchadnezzar's Transformation Related to Modern Plastic Surgery.

Metamorphosis is a rare theme in Hebrew tradition, yet the transformation of King Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4 offers profound insights into themes of humility, redemption, and renewal. This study explores Nebuchadnezzar's beastly transformation, marked by long hair, overgrown nails, and animalistic behavior, as a metaphorical framework for modern plastic and reconstructive surgery. His eventual restoration to human form parallels the journey of reconstructive patients recovering from disfigurement or trauma, addressing both aesthetic and psychological challenges. The transformation highlights 3

Facial aesthetic training in U.S. plastic surgery residency: A multi-source analysis of resident exposure and market demand.

This study assesses the relationship between operative exposure in U.S. plastic surgery residency and procedural demand in facial aesthetics by comparing national ACGME case log data from 935 independent-track residents (2013-2021) with global and U.S. procedural volume trends reported by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (2014-2022). A comparative trend analysis of five facial aesthetic procedures, rhinoplasty, blepharoplasty, facelift, brow lift, and other head and neck aesthetic procedures, showed that resident case volume increased significantly for rhinoplasty (4.35%

Demystifying Velopharyngeal Dysfunction for Plastic Surgery Trainees Part 3: Objective Assessment and Surgical Decision-Making.

Velopharyngeal dysfunction (VPD) is the inability to achieve proper closure of the velopharyngeal (VP) port, affecting speech and swallowing. After an auditory-perceptual speech evaluation by a speech-language pathologist, objective assessment of the VP port is required to determine the need for surgical intervention. This 3-part series provides a comprehensive discussion on (1) the anatomy and physiology of the velopharyngeal mechanism; (2) fundamental speech terminology and principles of perceptual speech assessment for VPD; and (3) techniques for objective evaluation of the VP port and surg

Assessing the Impact of COVID-19 on Facial Aesthetic Surgery Search Interest.

The global COVID-19 pandemic reshaped many components of modern health care practice. Before the pandemic, research was beginning to demonstrate the impact of self-facing cameras, selfie images, and webcams on patient interest in head and neck (H&N) aesthetic surgery. We sought to determine temporal changes in patient interest in aesthetic surgery of the H&N as compared with the rest of the body because of COVID-19, and the subsequent surge in Web-conferencing and telecommunication. The 2020 Plastic Surgery Trends Report produced by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons was used to identify

Primary care doctor's perception about the scope of plastic surgeons: A national survey.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgery is characterized by a broad spectrum of aesthetic and reconstructive surgical expertise that is not defined by an anatomic area. The authors sought to identify primary care doctors' perceptions of different fields of plastic surgery. METHODS: A short, anonymous, web-based survey was administered to primary care doctors in Portugal. Respondents were asked to choose the specialist they perceived to be an expert for 29 specific clinical areas, including 20 that are the core of plastic surgery practice. Specialists for selection included the following choices: dermatol

The Influence of Photo Editing Applications on Patients Seeking Facial Plastic Surgery Services.

BACKGROUND: The utilization of the smartphone and social media have introduced paradigm shifts to cosmetic surgery. Much has been studied regarding social media and its influences in plastic surgery; however, little is known about facial editing applications and how these relate to plastic surgery practices. OBJECTIVES: The authors sought to discover if face-editing applications influence patients' pursuit of plastic surgery, who utilizes these applications, and why. METHODS: An anonymous survey was administered between September and December 2019, including questions about demographics, fam

Adult Cranioplasty and Perioperative Patient Safety: Does Plastic Surgery Facility Volume Matter?

Cranioplasty lies at the intersection of neurosurgery and plastic surgery, though little is known about the impact of plastic surgery involvement. The authors hypothesized that adult cranioplasty patients at higher volume plastic surgery facilities would have improved inpatient outcomes. Adult cranioplasty encounters were extracted from the National Inpatient Sample from 2012 to 2014 based on International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes. Regression models included the following variables: age, gender, race/ethnicity, Elixhauser Comorbidity Index, payer, hospital size,

Regeneration in medicine: a plastic surgeons "tail" of disease, stem cells, and a possible future.

Regeneration in medicine is a concept that has roots dating back to the earliest known records of medical interventions. Unfortunately, its elusive promise has still yet to become a reality. In the field of plastic surgery, we use the common tools of the surgeon grounded in basic operative principles to achieve the present day equivalent of regenerative medicine. These reconstructive efforts involve a broad range of clinical deformities, both congenital and acquired. Outlined in this review are comments on clinical conditions and the current limitations to reconstruct these clinical entities i

[Establishment of rabbit orbital hypertelorism model and evaluation of effects of surgical correction].

OBJECTIVE: To establish a rabbit model of orbital hypertelorism for plastic and reconstructive surgery and evaluate the surgical effects. METHODS: Orbital osteotomies and medial translocation was performed in 16 New Zealand rabbits (4 to 6 months old) by combined intracranial-extracranial approach. The interorbital distance (IOD) and bone healing between the orbits were evaluated with gross measurement. X-ray and histological examinations were performed immediately and 12 weeks after the operation. RESULTS: The average IOD of the rabbits was 0.74 cm after completion of the operation, but inc
