Vaginal Squirting: Experiences, Discoveries, and Strategies in a U.S. Probability Sample of Women Ages 18-93.

Vaginal squirting is a phenomenon in which women expel fluid during the sexual response process, but it remains poorly understood in the extant literature. The study purpose was to use nationally representative data to investigate adult women's experiences with vaginal squirting. We assessed the prevalence of women who have ever squirted in their lifetime, the level of pleasure and concurrency of orgasm women reported during squirting, the ways in which women discovered squirting, and the challenges and/or concerns women experience with squirting. Forty percent of U.S. adult women (M = 47.6 ye

A Model for the Management of Female Sexual Dysfunctions.

Introduction Sexual pleasure is fundamental for the maintenance of health and well-being, but it may be adversely affected by medical and psychosocial conditions. Many patients only feel that their health is fully restored after they resume normal sexual activities. Any discussion of sexuality in a doctor's office is typically limited, mainly because of a lack of models or protocols available to guide the discussion of the topic. Objectives To present a model designed to guide gynecologists in the management of female sexual complaints. Methods This study presents a protocol used to assess wom

Brain's reward circuits mediate itch relief. a functional MRI study of active scratching.

Previous brain imaging studies investigating the brain processing of scratching used an exogenous intervention mimicking scratching, performed not by the subjects themselves, but delivered by an investigator. In real life, scratching is a conscious, voluntary, controlled motor response to itching, which is directed to the perceived site of distress. In this study we aimed to visualize in real-time by brain imaging the core mechanisms of the itch-scratch cycle when scratching was performed by subjects themselves. Secondly, we aimed to assess the correlations between brain patterns of activation

Brain activation to favorite music in healthy controls and depressed patients.

Reward-processing neurocircuitry has been delineated using verbal or visual processing and/or decision-making tasks. We examined more basic processes of listening to enjoyable music in healthy and depressed patients. The paradigm was passive, individualized, and brief. Sixteen depressed and 15 control individuals provided favorite music and identified neutral music from selections provided. In the fMRI scanner, individuals heard their neutral and their favorite music for 3 min each. Favorite versus neutral music-listening contrasts showed greater activation in controls than depressed patients

Management of anhedonia after epilepsy surgery.

Anhedonia is clinically defined as difficulty or inability to feel pleasure or to be motivated to perform activities that were previously pleasurable. Anhedonia is a core feature of depressive disorders but can be present in other conditions such as substance use and anxiety disorders. Herein we report the case of a 34-year-old female who developed marked anhedonia after left cortico-amygdalohippocampectomy. Despite optimal seizure control, the person struggled with anhedonia and other depressive symptoms. After ruling out medico-neurologic complications, she was prescribed with a selective se

Trait mindful attention is associated with greater real-time emotional benefits of positive experiences: Evidence from experimental studies.

Mindfulness has been linked to improved well-being, yet most evidence relies on retrospective self-report, and it is unclear whether more mindful individuals experience greater mood enhancement when exposed to positive experiences in real time. To address this gap, we reanalyzed three experimental datasets employing task-elicited positive contexts-viewing natural images (Study 1), recalling positive memories (Study 2), and aerobic exercise (Study 3)-and conducted a mechanistic follow-up assessing pleasure sensitivity (Study 4). The results show that trait mindfulness, measured with the Mindful

Abnormal Anhedonia as a Potential Endophenotype in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is often accompanied by cognitive, particularly executive function, impairments. Recently, anhedonia has emerged as an apparently important symptom of OCD reflecting altered emotion regulation. These two aspects are often comorbid in OCD. However, little is known about whether anhedonia may be a trait marker for OCD. METHODS: To verify the role of executive function and evaluate the role of anhedonia in OCD and its relationship with OCD symptoms, we recruited 60 OCD patients, 30 unaffected first-degree relatives (FDRs), and 60 healthy controls (

Sexual bondage: a review and unobtrusive investigation.

To investigate unobtrusively how individuals experience sexual bondage, we analyzed all messages about sexual bondage (N = 514) mailed to an international computerized discussion group on sexual bondage in 1990. The most frequent individual experience reported (n = 60) was playful use of bondage to explore new areas of sexual pleasure. Other frequent experiences were the exchange of power, intensified sexual pleasure, and tactile stimulation and bodily sensations. Preference for the dominant-initiator role was expressed in 71% of the messages by male heterosexuals, 11% of the messages by heter

Prevalence, goals and complications of heterosexual anal intercourse in a gynecologic population.

In a prevalence study of 526 consecutive gynecologic patients, a history of heterosexual anal intercourse (AI) was elicited in 25% and was a regular means of sexual gratification in 8% and was thus deemed active, pleasurable, and intercourse (APAI). The prevalence of AI and APAI was similar in patients of Mexican-American, Black-American and Anglo-American background and in patients older or younger than 30 years. The APAI participants were evenly distributed between cancer detection, family planning, free clinic and private consultant populations. The goals of the APAI group associated with h

Sexuality and the middle-aged cardiac patient.

Counseling for the resumption of sexual activity deserves as much attention in a cardiac rehabilitation program as walking or jogging. Research findings enable the counselor to give specific sexual advice. The energey expenditure during coitus for long-married couples is equivalent to that of climbing stairs, and consequently the risk of heart attack is low. However, clustering of psychosocial and physiologic demands, such as illicit affairs, outbursts of anger, alcohol, and hearty meals, may precipitate reinfarction or death. A sexual activities program is successful only if each partner is c

Affective and sensory correlates of hair pulling in pediatric trichotillomania.

Hair pulling in pediatric populations has not received adequate empirical study. Investigations of the affective and sensory states contributing to the etiology and maintenance of hair pulling may help to elucidate the classification of trichotillomania (TTM) as an impulse control disorder or obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder. The current study aimed to examine children's self-reported affective and sensory states associated with hair pulling. Fifteen participants completed a questionnaire assessing children's experiences during first and recent hair pulling episodes. Results revealed tha

Characteristics and clinical correlates of persistent anhedonia in the remitted patients with bipolar depression.

BACKGROUND: Anhedonia is increasingly recognized as a persistent symptom over the course of disease. Findings on the symptoms of anhedonia in remitted bipolar disorder are inconsistent, and little is known about the characteristics and relative factors in these patients. This study was conducted to explore the characteristics and clinical correlates of anhedonia in remitted patients with bipolar depression. METHODS: Sixty bipolar patients in partial remission following a recent depressive episode and sixty healthy controls were recruited from September 2023 to December 2023. Anhedonia was eva

Working while living with cystic fibrosis: Why symptom severity tells us little about employment outcomes?

This article examines the vocational and employment trajectories of people living with cystic fibrosis in French-speaking Switzerland. Drawing on qualitative data, it reveals that clinical severity alone is an ineffective predictor of these trajectories. These are dependent on the resources available within individuals' families. Furthermore, illness serves as a site of socialization: it fosters contrasting attitudes towards effort and pleasure. An ascetic orientation, characterized by discipline and long-term planning, fosters ambitious professional goals, whereas a hedonistic orientation can

Changes in music-evoked emotion and ventral striatal functional connectivity after psilocybin therapy for depression.

BACKGROUND: Music listening is a staple and valued component of psychedelic therapy, and previous work has shown that psychedelics can acutely enhance music-evoked emotion. AIMS: The present study sought to examine subjective responses to music before and after psilocybin therapy for treatment-resistant depression, while functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data was acquired. METHODS: Nineteen patients with treatment-resistant depression received a low oral dose (10 mg) of psilocybin, and a high dose (25 mg) 1 week later. fMRI was performed 1 week prior to the first dosing session an
