OBJECTIVES: To describe the frequency, severity, management and complications of guanfacine exposures in paediatric and adolescent patients referred to a state Poisons Information Centre or presenting to two EDs.
METHODS: A multicentre, retrospective review of guanfacine exposures from July 2017 to October 2023 in patients aged ≤19 years that were discussed with the Victorian Poisons Information Centre or presented to the Royal Children's Hospital or Austin Health EDs, Melbourne. INTRODUCTION: Mental health problems among youth have escalated over the past decade, with increased rates of self-harm, including suicide attempts by ingestion. Social media use has been linked to youth mental health, including "challenges" urging youth to ingest substances for recreational and other purposes. Bupropion is an antidepressant medication with expanding indications including smoking cessation, weight loss, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and amphetamine dependence. CONTEXT: Methadone is used in France since March 1995, only for opioid maintenance treatment, in a syrup form. For the launching of a capsule form in April 2008, French health authorities requested a prospective survey of all cases involving exposure to methadone in either of the two available pharmaceutical forms.
OBJECTIVE: The aim was to document, in different circumstances and compare the safety of the new capsule form to the syrup. This report presents the findings of one arm of the study, devoted to methadone-related suicide attempts.

METHOD: We conducted a retrospective analysis of cases of exposure to cocaine, amphetamines (amphetamine, methamphetamine, and 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine [MDMA]) and methylphenidate reported to the Swiss Toxicological Information Centre between 1997 and 2009.

Confusion between acetone fingernail polish removers and artificial fingernail products containing acetonitrile and N,N-dimethyl-p-toluidine has resulted in pediatric morbidity and mortality. In the present case, a 20-month-old boy drank less than one ounce of Remove Artificial Nail Remover containing 100% nitroethane. In the emergency department he displayed cyanosis and 39% methemoglobinemia. Following intravenous methylene blue, the child's methemoglobin level dropped to 5.7% and he recovered uneventfully. Alcohol intoxication is a common ingestion in pediatrics with close to 10,000 reports to poison control centers annually. Hypoglycemia, neurological depression (ataxia, coma, nystagmus, etc.) and unstable vitals (hypothermia, hypotension, bradycardia, and respiratory depression) are common presentations. METHODS: Seven cases of acute and acute-on-chronic topiramate toxicity observed in two clinical units of Polish Poison Control Centers in 2004-2005 were analyzed.
