Knowledge among physical education professionals about poliomyelitis and post-poliomyelitis syndrome: a cross-sectional study in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Post-poliomyelitis syndrome is a clinical condition that can affect poliomyelitis survivors with the onset of new symptoms several years after the acute disease. These symptoms include new muscular weakness, fatigue, pain, onset or aggravation of muscle atrophy, muscle cramps, onset or aggravation of pre-existing difficulties in accomplishing daily life activities, cold intolerance, sleep disorders, dysphonia or dysphagia, and respiratory deficiency. The treatment of post-poliomyelitis syndrome requires a multiprofessional health team because the rehabilitation procedures include l…

[History of development of the live poliomyelitis vaccine from Sabin attenuated strains in 1959 and idea of poliomyelitis eradication].

In 1958 Poliomyelitis Institute in Moscow and Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg received from A. Sabin the attenuated strains of poliomyelitis virus. The characteristics of the strains were thoroughly studied by A. A. Smorodintsev and coworkers. They found that the virulence of the strains fluctuated slightly in 10 consecutive passages through the intestine of the non-immune children. A part of the Sabin material was used by A. A. Smorodintsev and M. P. Chumakov in the beginning of 1959 for immunizing approximately 40000 children in Estonia, Lithuania, and Latvia. Epidemic p…

DESIGN: A cross-sectional study. SUBJECTS: One hundred and ninety-five polio patients attending postpolio clinic in Jerusalem. METHODS: Emotional distress (ED) was measured using the general health questionnaire (GHQ-12). Demographic, medical, social and functional data were recorded using a specific structured questionnair…

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--India, 2002.

Since the World Health Assembly resolved in May 1988 to eradicate poliomyelitis, the estimated global incidence of polio has decreased >99%, and three World Health Organization (WHO) regions (Americas, Western Pacific, and European) have been certified as polio-free. In 1995, India began accelerating polio eradication activities. By 2001, poliovirus circulation had been limited largely to the two northern states of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar, with 268 cases reported nationwide. However, in 2002, a major regional resurgence of polio occurred. As of January 25, 2003, a total of 1,556 cases wer…

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--Egypt, 2002.

Since the World Health Assembly resolved in 1988 to eradicate poliomyelitis globally, the number of countries in which polio is endemic has declined 94% from 125 countries to seven. The estimated number of wild poliovirus-positive cases worldwide has decreased >99%, and three World Health Organization (WHO) regions (Americas, European, and Western Pacific) are now certified as polio-free. Substantial progress has been made in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, where poliovirus is endemic in four (Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan, and Somalia) of 23 countries. This report summarizes progress during …

Progress toward poliomyelitis eradication--Egypt, 2001.

The 1988 World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis worldwide by 2000. Since then, the estimated number of polio cases has decreased by >99%. The Americas and the Western Pacific regions of the World Health Organization (WHO) have been certified polio-free, and it is expected that the European Region will be certified this year. Progress also has been made in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR), where polio is endemic in five of 22 countries (Afghanistan, Egypt, Pakistan, Somalia, and Sudan). This report summarizes progress toward polio eradication from 1997 through 2001 in E…

Oral poliomyelitis vaccine: time to change?

For 3 decades, vaccination against poliomyelitis has rested mainly on the use of the oral attenuated vaccine (OPV). In countries where wild type poliomyelitis has been successfully controlled by OPV, the rare cases of poliomyelitis that can still be identified occur in vaccinees or their contacts and are caused by vaccine related strains. Over years, data indicating that the inactivated vaccine (IPV) also has the potential to control poliomyelitis and that there are no known risks associated with the use of this vaccine have accumulated. The reasons for changes in vaccine policy in industriali…

Progress toward global poliomyelitis eradication, 2000.

In 1988, the World Health Assembly resolved to eradicate poliomyelitis globally by 2000 (1). Substantial progress toward this goal has been reported from all six World Health Organization (WHO) regions; 20 countries reported poliovirus transmission in December 2000 compared with 30 in 1999. WHO has prepared a global action plan that anticipates certification of polio eradication in 2005 (2). This report summarizes the status of the eradication effort and describes the remaining tasks to be completed to reach global polio eradication

Nonpoliovirus poliomyelitis simulating Guillain-Barré syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Paralytic poliomyelitis due to the wild-type poliovirus has been eradicated in the United States because of effective immunization programs. In the postvaccination era, most cases are caused by other RNA viruses, such as coxsackievirus or echovirus. The condition usually begins with a fever and upper respiratory tract or gastrointestinal tract symptoms that progress to a "paralytic" phase characterized by limb weakness, areflexia, and, occasionally, respiratory failure that superficially resemble Guillain-Barré syndrome. OBJECTIVE: To describe 2 patients with nonpoliovirus poliomy…

Poliomyelitis in Oman. II. Toward eradication.

In the past decade, the Sultanate of Oman has experienced three outbreaks of paralytic poliomyelitis--a widespread polio type 1 epidemic in 1988/1989, four cases of polio type 3 in three different regions in 1991, and a localized type 1 outbreak in 1993. The lessons learnt from each of these epidemics have guided us to modify and improve our polio eradication activities. Currently, these activities include administration of five primary and three booster doses of trivalent oral polio vaccine, yearly national immunization campaigns (NIDs) since 1995 with coverage of >90%, localized immunization…
