Revamping a Collapsed Kidney Care System: The ESKD Dialysis Program in Syria.

Years of political turmoil, conflicts, and mismanagement in Syria led to a catastrophic situation in all aspects of life including population health. The political change that occurred in December 2024 brought hopes for reform and prosperity. In this article, the authors report the findings on the status of the ESKD dialysis facilities in the country from a Syrian Ministry of Health committee charged with improving kidney care. The committee identified major problems in all aspects of care. About one fourth of the surveyed 116 facilities had no physicians, and none of them had a peritoneal dia

Determinants of viral haemorrhagic fever risk in Africa's tropical moist forests: A scoping review of spatial, socio-economic, and environmental factors.

BACKGROUND: Viral haemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) are identified by international health authorities as priorities for research and development, as they pose a threat to global health and economy. VHFs are zoonotic diseases whose acute forms in humans present a haemorrhagic syndrome and shock, with mortality rates of up to 90%. This work aims at synthetizing existing knowledge on spatial and spatially aggregable determinants that support the emergence and maintenance of VHFs in African countries covered by tropical moist forest, to better identify and map areas at risk. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDI

Macro level factors influencing strategic responses to emergent pandemics: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Strategic planning is critical for successful pandemic management. This study aimed to identify and review the scope and analytic depth of situation analyses conducted to understand their utility, and capture the documented macro-level factors impacting pandemic management. METHODS: To synthesise this disparate body of literature, we adopted a two-step search and review process. A systematic search of the literature was conducted to identify all studies since 2000, that have 1) employed a situation analysis; and 2) examined contextual factors influencing pandemic management. The i

Adults Experiencing Homelessness in the US-Mexico Border Region: A Photovoice Project.

Homelessness is a social, economic, and political crisis in the United States. In particular, the US-Mexico Border region has seen a surge of homelessness, specifically among veterans, women victims of intimate partner violence, and immigrants. In 2014, 12 persons in El Paso, TX, with experience of being homeless used the photovoice methodology to participate in a project titled, "The Voices and Images of the Residents of the Opportunity Center for the Homeless: A Visual Project on the Identity and Challenges Homeless Adults Face on the Border Region." The project was led by faculty from the D

Lessons in ambivalence: The Shanghai Municipal Council's opium policies, 1906-1917.

BACKGROUND: Shanghai was considered to be a "capital of opium" in modern China, hence the history of opium in the city has received significant attention. In the Shanghai International Settlement, where Chinese and foreigners lived as neighbours, drugs were considered by the administration as both "trouble maker", and important financial resource. This paper explores how the Shanghai Municipal Council (SMC), the most senior governing body in the settlement, used its position to maximize political and economic profit from the trade and consumption of opium. METHODS: The paper is based on docum

Control, elimination, and eradication of river blindness: scenarios, timelines, and ivermectin treatment needs in Africa.

River blindness (onchocerciasis) causes severe itching, skin lesions, and vision impairment including blindness. More than 99% of all current cases are found in sub-Saharan Africa. Fortunately, vector control and community-directed treatment with ivermectin have significantly reduced morbidity. Studies in Mali and Senegal proved the feasibility of elimination with ivermectin administration. The treatment goal is shifting from control to elimination in endemic African regions. Given limited resources, national and global policymakers need a rigorous analysis comparing investment options. For th

Evaluating Challenges and Opportunities to Boost Forest Productivity in the Kashmir Himalayas.

Forests are vital ecosystems that sustain biodiversity, regulate climate, and support local livelihoods. However, in the Kashmir Himalayas, forest productivity faces multiple constraints, including financial limitations, population pressure, land-use changes, and political instability. This study employs expert-based assessments and the Garrett ranking method to systematically evaluate the key challenges and opportunities for improving forest resource productivity in the region. Findings reveal that financial limitations (Mean Garrett Score [MGS] 70.80; R1), increasing population pressure (MGS

The lingering impacts of COVID-19 on older women in Kenya and Uganda: A quantitative analysis of health, wellbeing, and WASH insecurity.

BACKGROUND: The world appears to be experiencing more than its fair share of shocks: climatic disasters, pandemics, wars and political events that have far-reaching consequences for vulnerable populations globally. One such example was the COVID-19 pandemic, which resulted in both direct and indirect impacts on older women, especially those residing in Sub-Saharan Africa, due to the already fragile economic and health care systems in place, as well as the lack of infrastructure for public services. While substantial literature now exists documenting the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable populat

Global health at crossroads: uniting together to overcome challenges, restore trust and advance priorities for a sustainable future.

The world is currently facing an unprecedented convergence of crises that threaten the core pillars of public health, scientific integrity, and social stability. These challenges are profoundly interconnected and have the potential to exacerbate global inequalities, jeopardize health security, and undermine the progress achieved through decades of international collaboration. Our viewpoint declaration, developed by 366 healthcare workers and scientists from 119 countries across six continents, highlights the urgent need for global solidarity and collective action to address these interconnecte

A political economy of hope: Materialisations of social class and inequity in women's imaginings of alcohol (free) futures.

This paper explores how social class shapes affective experiences, integrating the sociology of emotions with political economic theory to examine how systems of dis/advantage influence women's hopes and hopefulness about their futures and the potential for reductions in alcohol consumption. Using 149 open-ended qualitative interviews with 86 women across three studies, we analyse 'hope stories' to investigate how capacities for hopefulness are embedded in the social practices and temporal orientations of gender and class. Interviews focused on the role of alcohol in daily life and perceptions

The double-edged sword of scapegoration: how anti-immigrant hostility harms both immigrants and host societies.

Immigration is among the most consequential social phenomena of the 21st century, yet the psychological dimensions of anti-immigrant hostility-particularly its bidirectional harms-remain insufficiently theorized. This paper introduces and defines the concept of scapegoration, a portmanteau of scapegoating and immigration, to describe the systematic attribution of structural societal failures to immigrant populations as a means of deflecting responsibility from institutional and political actors. Unlike xenophobia, which denotes generalized fear or hostility toward foreigners, scapegoration cap

The Cholera Epidemic in Zimbabwe, 2008-2009: A Review and Critique of the Evidence.

The 2008-2009 Zimbabwe cholera epidemic resulted in 98,585 reported cases and caused more than 4,000 deaths. In this study, we used a mixed-methods approach that combined primary qualitative data from a 2008 Physicians for Human Rights-led investigation with a systematic review and content analysis of the scientific literature. Our initial investigation included semi-structured interviews of 92 key informants, which we supplemented with reviews of the social science and human rights literature, as well as international news reports. Our systematic review of the scientific literature retrieved

Between healing and repression: The role of medicine and psychiatry in Hohenschönhausen prison as reconstructed from memories.

This study investigates the role of medical, and in particular psychiatric, care in the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen remand prison, situated within the repressive state security apparatus of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Drawing on 11 oral history interviews with former political prisoners, two physicians in different capacities, and a lawyer, it examines the tensions between the professional mandate of care and the political embedding of medical practice. The central question is how doctors navigated a system that structurally intertwined care and control. The findings reveal a complex and

Bringing leaders together to support the development of children's palliative care across the Asia Pacific region-an interdisciplinary workshop.

Globally, there are over 21 million children in need of palliative care. Over a quarter (28%) of these children live in the Asia Pacific region, where access to children's palliative care is limited or absent. Diversity in culture, economies, and political systems across the region has resulted in significant variation in how health services are developed, funded, and delivered. For children's palliative care, services are often poorly coordinated across health systems, with limited integration into national health policies. Despite this there is a growing group of passionate clinicians and fo…

Affects of ableism in medical education: happiness, resignation, and the disabled killjoy.

Exclusion is not only an experience but a feeling. Yet, studies of disabled medical learners have paid little attention to their emotions. Affect theory provides a lens for studying how emotions are produced by socio-political ways of being and knowing. In this study, we investigated affects circulating through disabled student narratives to explore how these students perceived disability and agency within an ableist system. We conducted a reflexive thematic analysis of 674 open-text responses by disabled medical students from the 2019 and 2020 AAMC Year Two Questionnaire about their experienc
