Relationship between bone mineral density and clinical features in patients with inflammatory bowel disease: a local study in Turkish population.

This study aimed to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) of patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) in order to determine the possible risk factors for bone loss. A total of 142 patients with UC (n = 88) and CD (n = 54) participated in the study. They were assessed for gender, body mass index (BMI), disease duration and activity, intestinal site of involvement, history of bowel resection, use of steroids, and extra-intestinal findings and complications. The BMD was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. There were no differences in BMD between UC and CD patients

Population-based study of age and sex differences in bone volumetric density, size, geometry, and structure at different skeletal sites.

UNLABELLED: In a population-based, cross-sectional study, we assessed age- and sex-specific changes in bone structure by QCT. Over life, the cross-sectional area of the vertebrae and proximal femur increased by approximately 15% in both sexes, whereas vBMD at these sites decreased by 39-55% and 34-46%, respectively, with greater decreases in women than in men. INTRODUCTION: The changes in bone structure and density with aging that lead to fragility fractures are still unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In an age- and sex-stratified population sample of 373 women and 323 men (age, 20-97 years),

The association between bone mineral density, metacarpal morphometry, and upper limb fractures in children: a population-based case-control study.

The aim of this population-based case-control study was to examine the association between bone mass and upper limb fractures in children aged 9-16 yr. Areal bone mineral density and bone mineral apparent density (BMAD) were measured by both dual energy absorptiometry (DXA) and metacarpal index (MI) by hand radiograph. A total of 321 fracture cases and 321 randomly selected individually matched controls were studied. For all fractures, cases had lower DXA measures at all sites (1.1-3.3%; all P < 0.05). A larger reduction was observed for those with wrist and forearm fractures (1.2-4.5%; all P

Identification and characterization of a newly recognized population of high-Na+, low-K+, low-density sickle and normal red cells.

We describe a population of sickle cell anemia red cells (SS RBCs) ( approximately 4%) and a smaller fraction of normal RBCs (<0.03%) that fail to dehydrate when permeabilized to K(+) with either valinomycin or elevated internal Ca(2+). The nonshrinking, valinomycin-resistant (val-res) fractions, first detected by flow cytometry of density-fractionated SS RBCs, constituted up to 60% of the lightest, reticulocyte-rich (R1) cell fraction, and progressively smaller portions of the slightly denser R2 cells and discocytes. R1 val-res RBCs had a mean cell hemoglobin concentration of approximately 21

Association between the ratio of triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and nocturnal hypertension: a cross-sectional study in a Chinese population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The ratio of triglycerides to high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (TG/HDL-C) serves as a predictive indicator for metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. Simultaneously, nocturnal hypertension significantly increases the risk of target organ damage and cardiovascular events. However, the relationship between the TG/HDL-C ratio and nocturnal hypertension remains unclear. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the efficacy of the TG/HDL-C ratio in predicting the occurrence of nocturnal hypertension and reducing related adverse events. METHOD: Our rigo

Two centuries of carbon emissions (1800-2022): The role of government spending, economic growth, and population density in the United States.

Over the past two centuries, since the onset of the Industrial Revolution, human activities have exerted an unparalleled influence on the environment, with CO2 emissions posing a major challenge to ecological sustainability. In this context, the United States (U.S.) stands out as a prominent historical emitter, providing a unique perspective for examining the underlying triggers of environmental degradation. This study analyzes in-depth the effects of government spending, economic growth, and population density on CO2 emissions based on two centuries of data (1800-2022). The research seeks to …

Bone mineral density as a mediator in the association of abdominal aortic calcification with mortality among the general population aged over 50.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The prevalence of vascular calcification and osteoporosis is increasing in the general population. We aimed to investigate the combined impact of abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) and bone mineral density (BMD) on mortality risk. METHODS AND RESULTS: Data were from the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). AAC was assessed using the AAC-24 scoring system (range 0-24) and categorized as none (0), mild (1-4), or severe (≥5). Bone mineral density (BMD) was classified according to WHO criteria as normal (T-score ≥ -1.0), osteopenia (T-score b

Environmental influences on Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) population densities across 2 urban communities on the U.S.-Mexico border.

The mosquito species Aedes aegypti (Linneaus) is the vector of multiple arboviruses, including dengue, Chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Risk of infections associated with these arboviruses continues to expand as the geographical range of Ae. aegypti extends into temperate regions. Although Ae. aegypti is abundant along the U.S.-Mexico border, the ecology of this mosquito species in this temperate/subtropical desert is not well understood. Our study objective was to estimate the seasonal population density in 2 urban communities: Sparks, El Paso, Texas and Anapra, Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, …

Population-based study of age- and sex-related differences in muscle density and size in thoracic and lumbar spine: the Framingham study.

UNLABELLED: Relative age-related deficit in trunk muscle density was greater in women than men whereas the relative decrease in muscle mass with age was similar in both sexes. The greater muscle fat content and greater age-related fat accumulation among women may contribute to women suffering more functional disabilities than men. INTRODUCTION: A better understanding of the effect of aging on trunk musculature will have implications for physical function, disability, pain, and risk of injury in older adults. Thus, we determined the age- and sex-related differences in muscle density and size o

Mammographic breast density and breast cancer risk in a Mediterranean population: a nested case-control study in the EPIC Florence cohort.

PURPOSE: Mammographic breast density (MBD) has been consistently associated with breast cancer (BC) risk, and at the same time it is modulated by established BC risk factors related to reproductive and hormonal history and to lifestyle. We aimed to evaluate the association between the clinical breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS), a qualitative MBD classification used in clinical setting, and BC risk through a case-control nested in the EPIC Florence cohort where baseline information on reproductive history, lifestyle and anthropometry were collected. METHODS: The study includes

Thigh muscle attenuation measured by computed tomography was associated with the risk of low bone density in community-dwelling elderly population.

OBJECTIVES: Although muscle mass has been shown to be positively related with bone mineral density (BMD), there are only a few studies that investigated the association between muscle strength or muscle quality and BMD. We investigated the effects of muscle strength and muscle fat infiltration, as a measure of muscle quality, adjusted for muscle mass on femoral neck BMD in Korean elderly cohort. METHODS: We recruited 242 men and 231 women aged over 65 years who participated in the Korean Longitudinal Study on Health and Ageing. Leg muscle mass and femoral neck BMD were measured by dual-energy

Direct-to-participant feedback and awareness of bone mineral density testing results in a population-based sample of mid-aged Canadians.

UNLABELLED: This population-based study of mid-aged Canadians assessed awareness of diagnosis by bone mineral density (BMD) following dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) testing and compared the effects of feedback only to the physician with direct-to-participant feedback. Poor recall of osteoporosis results was observed irrespective of the feedback destination, but direct-to-participant feedback improved recall of borderline or normal results. INTRODUCTION: BMD testing provides information about fracture risk. This study assessed whether awareness of results, in a random population sample

Seasonal changes in density and tissue distribution of Onchocerca cervicalis microfilariae in ponies and related changes in Culicoides variipennis populations in Louisiana.

Seasonal changes in density and spatial distribution of Onchocerca cervicalis microfilariae were studied in ventral-midline skin of 15 infected pony mares in southern Louisiana. Triple running mean analysis of data over a 13-mo period indicated that a distinct pattern exists in total microfilariae population density and in microfilariae occurrence in different levels of the dermis. Microfilariae density reaches peak levels in the spring followed by a 58% decrease in the summer, a 19% increase in the fall, and a decrease to the lowest numbers in the winter. Microfilariae were found in all level…

Population densities of black-and-gold howler monkeys (Alouatta caraya) in northeastern Argentina and the possible influence of a yellow fever outbreak.

Habitat disturbances, including stochastic events such as disease outbreaks, can significantly affect primate populations by reducing population density and demographic structure. The black-and-gold howler monkey (Alouatta caraya, IUCN: Near Threatened) is the southernmost species of the genus Alouatta and inhabits a variety of environments throughout its distributional range. In Argentina, A. caraya is classified as vulnerable, but following a yellow fever outbreak (YFO) between 2007 and 2009, the subpopulations in the province of Misiones were reclassified as Endangered. This study provides,…

Investigating the effects of population density of residence and rural/urban classification on rate of influenza-like illness symptoms in England and Wales.

BACKGROUND: Better understanding of risk factors for influenza could help improve seasonal and pandemic planning. There is a dearth of literature on area-level risk factors such as population density and rural/urban living. METHODS: We used data from Flusurvey, an online community-based cohort that records influenza events. The study outcome was symptoms of influenza-like illness (ILI). Multivariable Poisson regression analysis was used to explore associations of both population density and rural/urban status with rate of ILI symptoms and whether these effects differed by vaccination status. …

Dynamics of Onchocerca volvulus microfilarial densities after ivermectin treatment in an ivermectin-naïve and a multiply treated population from Cameroon.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Ivermectin has been the keystone of onchocerciasis control for the last 25 years. Sub-optimal responses to the drug have been reported in Ghanaian communities under long-term treatment. We assessed, in two Cameroonian foci, whether the microfilaricidal and/or embryostatic effects of ivermectin on Onchocerca volvulus have been altered after several years of drug pressure. METHODS: We compared the dynamics of O. volvulus skin microfilarial densities after ivermectin treatment in two cohorts with contrasting exposure to this drug: one received repeated treatment for 13 year
