Economic burden of Peste des Petits Ruminants in India: A meta-analysis with probabilistic uncertainty assessment.

Peste des petits ruminants (PPR) is an enzootic disease of small ruminants and imposes substantial economic losses. This study estimated the national-level economic burden attributable to PPR in India through meta-analysis based on mortality loss, body-weight loss, treatment cost, opportunity cost of labour, distress sale loss and milk loss (for goats) by systematically synthesizing available evidence. Since several studies reporting per-animal economic losses did not provide measures of dispersion, a reference variability of 15% of the reported loss estimates was assumed for the primary meta-

Non-rheumatic calcific aortic valve disease as a global driver of heart failure: Burden and three-decade trends.

BACKGROUND: Global aging and lifestyle shifts raise cardiovascular disease burden, but the specific contribution of non-rheumatic calcific aortic valve disease (nrCAVD) to heart failure (HF) in older adults is incompletely defined. OBJECTIVES: To quantify global trends, drivers, inequalities, and future projections of HF attributable to nrCAVD among persons aged ≥60 and to assess causality. METHODS: Using GBD 2021 estimates (1990-2021) for prevalence, Years Lived with Disability(YLDs), and age-standardized rates across 204 countries, we applied decomposition analysis, Social Inequality Index

The use of environmental data in descriptive and predictive models of vector-borne disease in North America.

Vector-borne disease incidence and burden are on the rise. Weather events and climate patterns are known to influence vector populations and disease distribution and incidence. Changes in weather trends and climatic factors can shift seasonal vector activity and host behavior, thus altering pathogen distribution and introducing diseases to new geographic regions. With the upward trend in global temperature, changes in the incidence and distribution of disease vectors possibly linked to climate change have been documented. Forecasting and modeling efforts are valuable for incorporating climate

Climate change and mosquito-borne disease: knowing the horse before hitching the cart.

Speculations on the potential impacts of climate change on human health often focus on the mosquito-borne diseases but ignore the complex interplay of the multitude of factors that are generally dominant in the dynamics of their transmission. A holistic view of this complexity - particularly the ecology and behaviour of the host and the ecology and behaviour of the vector - is the only valid starting point for assessing the significance of climate in the prevalence and incidence of these diseases.

Application of the CDC EbolaResponse Modeling tool to disease predictions.

Model-based predictions were critical in eliciting a vigorous international public health response to the 2014 Ebola Virus Disease outbreak in West Africa. Here, we describe the performances of an extension of the CDC-initiated EbolaResponse Modeling tool to the Ebola Forecasting Challenge, which offered a controlled environment for epidemiological predictions. In the EbolaResponse tool, transmission risks and proportions of population affected by interventions were fitted to data via least square fitting. Prediction performances were evaluated for 5 prediction time points of 4 synthetic outbr

Spatio-temporal analysis of the main dengue vector populations in Singapore.

BACKGROUND: Despite the licensure of the world's first dengue vaccine and the current development of additional vaccine candidates, successful Aedes control remains critical to the reduction of dengue virus transmission. To date, there is still limited literature that attempts to explain the spatio-temporal population dynamics of Aedes mosquitoes within a single city, which hinders the development of more effective citywide vector control strategies. Narrowing this knowledge gap requires consistent and longitudinal measurement of Aedes abundance across the city as well as examination of relati

Longitudinal Pointwise Visual Field Prediction in Early-Stage Glaucoma Using Regression Models and Long Short-Term Memory: A Simulation Study.

BACKGROUND: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy in which longitudinal visual field (VF) prediction is essential for timely clinical decision-making and preventing irreversible VF loss. However, accurate prediction remains challenging due to the noisy, high-dimensional nature of VF data and their complex longitudinal patterns. Capturing these patterns may require increasingly sophisticated prediction models, but greater model complexity can reduce interpretability. Therefore, prediction models need to capture temporal patterns while balancing interpretability and computational feasibilit

Is Brazil reaching malaria elimination? A time series analysis of malaria cases from 2011 to 2023.

In Brazil, 99% of malaria cases occur in the Amazon region, mainly caused by Plasmodium vivax (~83%) and Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) species. Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, Brazil aims to eliminate autochthonous malaria by 2035. This study aims to analyse epidemiological patterns of malaria in Brazil to discuss if Brazil is on track to meet malaria control targets. A time-series study was conducted analysing autochthonous malaria new infections notifications in the Brazilian Amazon region from 2011 until June 2023. Descriptive analyses were conducted, along with joinpoint regre

Potential epidemiologic, economic, and budgetary impacts of current rates of hepatitis C treatment in medicare and non-medicare populations.

We forecast the health and budgetary impact of hepatitis C (HCV) treatment on the Medicare program based on currently observed rates of treatment among Medicare and non-Medicare patients and identify the impact of higher rates of treatment among non-Medicare populations. We developed a computer microsimulation model to conduct an epidemiologic forecast, a budgetary impact analysis, and a cost-effectiveness analysis of the treatment of HCV based on three scenarios: 1) no treatment, 2) continuation of current-treatment rates, and 3) treatment rates among non-Medicare patients increased to match

Projections of the current and future disease burden of hepatitis C virus infection in Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in Malaysia has been estimated at 2.5% of the adult population. Our objective, satisfying one of the directives of the WHO Framework for Global Action on Viral Hepatitis, was to forecast the HCV disease burden in Malaysia using modelling methods. METHODS: An age-structured multi-state Markov model was developed to simulate the natural history of HCV infection. We tested three historical incidence scenarios that would give rise to the estimated prevalence in 2009, and calculated the incidence of cirrhosis, end-stage liver disease,

Frame forecasting in cine MRI using the PCA respiratory motion model: comparing recurrent neural networks trained online and transformers.

Respiratory-induced motion complicates accurate irradiation of thoraco-abdominal tumors during radiotherapy, as treatment-system latency entails target-location uncertainties. This work addresses frame forecasting in dynamic chest and liver MRI to compensate for such delays. We investigate RNNs trained with online learning algorithms, enabling adaptation to changing respiratory patterns via on-the-fly parameter updates, and transformers, increasingly common in time-series forecasting for their ability to capture long-term dependencies. Experiments were conducted using twelve sagittal thoracic

A Novel Deep Learning Approach for Forecasting Myocardial Infarction Occurrences with Time Series Patient Data.

Myocardial Infarction (MI) commonly referred to as a heart attack, results from the abrupt obstruction of blood supply to a section of the heart muscle, leading to the deterioration or death of the affected tissue due to a lack of oxygen. MI, poses a significant public health concern worldwide, particularly affecting the citizens of the Chittagong Metropolitan Area. The challenges lie in both prevention and treatment, as the emergence of MI has inflicted considerable suffering among residents. Early warning systems are crucial for managing epidemics promptly, especially given the escalating di

Forecasting the Dialysis Burden in Japan: Validation-Based Projections of Prevalence and Incidence Through 2050.

BACKGROUND: Japan has one of the highest dialysis prevalence rates worldwide and a shrinking, aging population. Whether dialysis burden has entered a sustained post-peak phase or whether recent declines partly reflect pandemic-related disruptions remains uncertain. METHODS: We analyzed nationwide data from the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy Renal Data Registry (1983-2022) to project dialysis prevalence and incidence through 2050. Seven forecasting approaches were implemented, including classical time-series models, demographic regression models, machine-learning algorithms, and a perfo

The Evolution of Modeling Approaches: From Statistical Models to Deep Learning for Locust and Grasshopper Forecasting.

Locust outbreaks cause a significant threat to global food security and ecosystem stability, with particularly severe consequences in grassland regions, where grasshoppers also exert considerable ecological pressure. In comparison to grasshoppers, locusts typically occur at much larger spatial scales, as their strong migratory ability and collective movement behavior lead to greater spatial connectivity and autocorrelation. The forecasting of both locust and grasshopper outbreaks remains a formidable scientific challenge, primarily due to the complex, nonlinear spatiotemporal interactions amon
