BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization (WHO) Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) 2013-2030 emphasises that effective NCD prevention and control requires leadership, coordinated multisectoral and multistakeholder engagement across a broad range of sectors, and partnerships with relevant civil-society organisations and private-sector entities. This study identifies country specific policy instruments and levers, and thus, unfolds the context specific contributions of a national multisectoral commission to tackle the problems of NCDs.

The Northeast region of Brazil is characterized by long periods of drought. However, the region is also frequently affected by floods. The socioeconomic characteristics of the locality make the population more vulnerable to the impacts of these disasters. Therefore, the aim of this article is to investigate the short to long-term impacts of hydrological disasters in northeastern Brazil on morbidity and mortality rates, by age groups. For this purpose, the difference-in-differences method proposed by Callaway and Sant'Anna was applied to a monthly panel data spanning the period from 2000 to 201

Despite the importance of sleep to overall health and well-being, there is a high prevalence of undiagnosed sleep disorders and adverse sleep health, particularly among vulnerable populations. Such vulnerable populations include people experiencing homelessness (PEH), refugees, and incarcerated individuals. In this narrative review, we provide an overview of the literature on sleep health and disorders among key and vulnerable populations (e.g., PEH, refugees, and incarcerated individuals). The limited research among these populations indicated a high prevalence of sleep disorders, mainly inso

Introduction: Strabismus is a common condition among children, and its psychosocial impact has been demonstrated in recent years. The interest in a more comprehensive approach was enhanced by the recognition of health as a four-dimensional concept, arising the term Health-related Quality of Life. Therefore, we aim to evaluate the influence of strabismus in Health-Related Quality of Life of a Portuguese pediatric population. Material and Methods: Case-control prospective transversal study enrolling children between 5 and 12 years old. All had a complete orthoptic and ophthalmological evaluation

This paper is the third in a series of narrative reviews challenging core concepts in oral health research and practice. Our series started with a framework for Inclusion Oral Health. Our second review explored one component of this framework, looking at how intersectionality adds important complexity to oral public health. This current manuscript drills into a second component of Inclusion Oral Health, exploring how labels can lead to 'othering' thereby misrepresenting populations and (re)producing harms. Specifically, we address a common oral public health label: vulnerable populations. This

This paper presents a population health framework for homelessness prevention. Rooted in the Los Angeles County Homeless Initiative, the framework includes strategies that affect social determinants of health that influence a broad range of health outcomes prevalent among the homeless. For each prevention level, we consider the purpose of prevention, the sub-population of interest, and evidence of the effectiveness of interventions in addressing factors that affect health and health outcomes. Our review highlights the importance of cross-cutting strategies and the limits of our knowledge about…

BACKGROUND: Maternity care and women's health are measured, in part, by the stillbirth rate of a country. The purposes of this pilot project were to: a) establish a baseline of health care provider knowledge regarding stillbirth risk factors based on geographic distribution (urban/rural) and provider licensure (MD, APRN, PA, CNM) and b) evaluate the utility of a Stillbirth Risk Factor Toolkit and its effects on provider knowledge.
METHODS: Evaluative research using a retrospective pre-posttest survey design was completed. The study setting included primary care clinics (urban [n=25] and rural

They provide a contextual analysis of the conclusions and evidence from WHO commissioned research and expert consultations in 2013 and 2014, as well as a synthesis of literature reviews conducted on AHT and MD.
RESULTS: Practical, life-enhancing support for older people

Maximal levels of carcinogenic hazards under inhalation route of substances from the air were established to be noted on gasoline, manganese, sulfur dioxide, copper oxide, formaldehyde. In the formation of carcinogenic risk the greatest contribution is made by chromium, gasoline, formaldehyde, benzol. The risk of non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects for the population of the city continues to remain to be hi

An agro-industrial program involving sugar cane farming was established in Mbandjock (Cameroon) in the 1960's. We studied the impact of this development project on the health of the population by determining the prevalence and distributions of the major parasitic diseases according to district, ethnic origin, age and sex. Three main conclusions can be drawn. First, in the study area, economic development was not associated with deteriorating health conditions. Indeed, the incidence of parasitic disease was lower in Mbandjock than in surrounding areas. Second, imported diseases (loaiasis and sc

This Special Issue (SI) of Preventive Medicine is the 10th in a series on behavior change, health, and health disparities. This issue focuses on Contingency Management (CM), a highly efficacious behavior-change intervention for substance use disorders (SUDs) and other behavioral health conditions wherein patients receive material incentives (e.g., vouchers exchangeable for retail items) contingent on objectively verified behavior change. Despite substantial support for its efficacy, CM remains largely unavailable in U.S. community SUD treatment facilities and other healthcare settings. This is
