Hyperproliferation of Elschnig pearl-type posterior capsule opacification and spontaneous regression in two pseudophakic canine eyes.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the hyperproliferation of Elschnig pearl-type posterior capsule opacification and concurrent uveitis in two canine eyes after phacoemulsification, followed by spontaneous resolution of the Elschnig pearls. ANIMAL STUDIED: A 10-year-old castrated male Spitz (Case 1) and a 4-year-old spayed female Bichon Frise (Case 2). PROCEDURE: Elschnig pearls proliferating beyond the anterior capsulotomy site were observed in the right eye 10 months after bilateral diabetic cataract surgery (Case 1) and 7 months after unilateral cataract surgery (Case 2). In both cases, hyperprolifer

Long-term outcome of primary versus secondary intraocular lens implantation after simultaneous removal of bilateral congenital cataract.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcomes of intraocular lens (IOL) implantation for congenital cataract in children under 2 years old are still undetermined. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed all cases of bilateral congenital cataract who had undergone simultaneous bilateral cataract removal with posterior capsulotomy and central anterior vitrectomy between 1990 and 2010. Patients randomly underwent primary IOL implantation or secondary IOL implantation after a period of contact lens wear. The two groups were compared for visual outcome and complications during follow-up. RESULTS: Cataract removal

Spontaneous Healing of a Bucket-Handle Posterior Labral Detachment After Hip Dislocation in a Five-Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

CASE: We report the case of a 5-year-old girl who sustained a traumatic hip dislocation and a spontaneous reduction that was complicated by nonconcentric reduction and a large bucket-handle labral detachment. This injury was managed, via an anterior approach, with capsulotomy and reduction of the large interposed labral tear with an attached osteochondral fragment from the posterior aspect of the acetabulum. No additional surgical treatment was employed for the labral tear. CONCLUSION: The patient ultimately demonstrated radiographic healing and an asymptomatic, clinically stable hip. This ca

The effect of capsule tension ring on posterior capsule opacification: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Posterior capsule opacification is one of the most common complications after cataract surgery. Studies have suggested that the introduction of a capsule tension ring might play a critical role in the prevention of capsule opacification, yet quantitative evidence is still lacking. This work consists of a meta-analysis on available data in order to explore the influence of a capsule tension ring on posterior capsule opacification. METHODS: A comprehensive review of the literature on capsule tension ring and posterior capsule opacification was carried out using the Embase, Pubmed, W

Endocapsular hematoma with biconvex posterior chamber intraocular lenses.

We describe ten cases of endocapsular hematoma that developed in the early postoperative period after cataract or combined glaucoma and cataract surgery. After capsulorhexis and phacoemulsification, one of three types of posterior chamber lenses with biconvex optics was implanted in nine eyes. In one eye, a convex-plano poly(methyl methacrylate) lens was implanted. All lenses were implanted in the bag. Postoperatively, an anterior chamber hyphema was observed in four eyes and erythrocytes in another five. Subsequently observed endocapsular hematomas disappeared gradually over the next several

Results of intraocular lens implantation in paediatric aphakia.

Intraocular lenses were implanted in 16 eyes of 13 patients with congenital cataract, and visual progress was plotted using a preferential-looking technique. Initial surgery was by lens aspiration with preservation of the posterior capsule, and subsequent posterior capsulotomy without anterior vitrectomy. Poly-HEMA posterior chamber lenses were used, usually as a primary procedure but in four cases as a secondary procedure after contact lens failure. No serious complications were encountered. Most eyes achieved a very significant visual improvement, and none were worse than preoperatively. Res

Vitrectorhexis and lens aspiration with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in spherophakia.

UNLABELLED: We describe a technique that uses the vitrector to perform successful lens aspiration and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in children with spherophakia and anterior lens subluxation. After an anterior chamber maintainer is placed, the ocutome is introduced through a limbal incision to perform a circular vitrectorhexis to avoid excessive manipulation of the unstable lens followed by gentle cortex aspiration. A foldable IOL is injected into the sulcus (3-piece IOL) or bag (1-piece IOL) if the capsule is sufficiently stable. Through a pars plana incision, the ocu

Correction of equinus in clubfoot: the contribution of arthrography.

The equinus deformity in clubfoot is twofold: talocrural and talocalcaneal. No study has been carried out on the link between these two elements and whether they are mutually dependent or independent. This has led to an unvarying operative strategy confined to opening the talocrural capsule and section of the talofibular ligament. To assess the extent to which these procedures are warranted, the authors performed perioperative talocrural arthrography, taking radiographs before and after each stage of operative treatment. In all cases, talocrural equinus seemed to disappear without the need for

Incorrectly Focused Neodymium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet (Nd:YAG) Laser Beam Leads to Massive Destructive Effects in Small-Aperture (Pinhole) Intraocular Lenses.

INTRODUCTION: Pinhole intraocular lenses (IOLs) were developed to improve reading by compensating for loss of accommodative function. The IC-8® Apthera™ is a small-aperture presbyopia-correcting IOL that combines the proven principle of small-aperture optics with an aspheric monofocal lens to deliver a continuous range of vision for patients with cataracts from distance to near vision. Posterior capsule opacification is the most common sequela after cataract surgery. It is effectively treated by laser capsulotomy. However, if the laser beam is incorrectly focused, the IOL can be permanently da

Intraocular pressure increase after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy and anterior segment optical coherence tomography analysis.

This study is to determine whether post-procedure intraocular pressure (IOP) increase is associated with the anterior chamber angle in cases of Neodymium: yttrium-aluminum garnet (Nd: YAG) laser capsulotomy. The study included 51 eyes with posterior capsule opacification. Initial IOP values of the patients were compared with IOP values without intraocular pressure-lowering administration at the end of the 1st hour, 1st day, 3rd day, and 7th day after Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. The anterior segment angle configuration was evaluated using anterior segment optical coherence tomography analysis wit

Polishing the posterior capsule after extracapsular extraction of senile cataract.

Posterior capsular polishing is performed to delay or prevent capsular opacification. To study its effectiveness, a prospective study of 412 patients with bilateral senile cataracts was conducted. Each patient had bilateral extracapsular cataract extraction with laser ridge, posterior chamber lens implantation. The right eye of each patient had posterior capsular polishing using the Tennessee-Freeman polisher. The posterior capsule in the left eye was not polished. All patients above the age of 80 years (22 patients) had bilateral opacification within 16 months postoperatively. For patients le

Advances in interdisciplinary medical and engineering research of intraocular lens surface modifications to prevent posterior capsule opacification.

Posterior capsule opacification (PCO), a common complication after cataract surgery, impacts a patient's long-term visual quality to various degrees. Although a neodymium:yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy is a very effective treatment, it may lead to a serial of complications. Accordingly, the search for simple, safe, and effective methods to prevent PCO has received widespread attention. Various researchers are committed to the interdisciplinary collaboration between medicine and engineering fields, such as functionalizing the surface of the intraocular lens (IOL) v

Pseudoexfoliation material on posterior chamber intraocular lenses.

The presence of pseudoexfoliation material on the surface of an intraocular lens (IOL) is a rare finding. We report a series of seven cases with different patterns of pseudoexfoliation material deposition on the posterior chamber IOLs, recognized 2-20 years after cataract surgery. Six patients had an IOL implanted in the capsular bag and one in the ciliary sulcus. Two patients had undergone posterior capsulotomy. Although the pathophysiological mechanisms and clinical significance of this finding remain unknown, the careful follow-up of pseudophakic patients with known or suspected pseudoexfol

Posterior Capsule Opacification after Cataract Surgery via Implantation with Hydrophobic Acrylic Lens Compared with Silicone Intraocular Lens: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lens (IOL) is the most popular material in cataract surgery. Posterior capsule opacification (PCO) is a long-term complication of cataract surgery. It can impair vision and adversely affect the prognosis of IOL delamination. The objective of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis to provide an updated evaluation of long-term complications and visual function after implantation with hydrophobic acrylic and silicone intraocular lenses. PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched from January 2000 until March 2021. Randomized control
