BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) often experience postural instability that worsens when exposed to visual motion stimuli. We investigated how different visual motion stimuli affect patients' postural sway and their perceived egomotion during stance.
METHODS: 28 PPPD patients and 26 gender and healthy control subjects (HC) underwent posturographic measurements on a firm or foam platform while being exposed to either vestibular or visual motion stimuli or their combination. Vestibular stimuli were applied via 1.3 mA galvanic vestibular stimula

Evidence suggests that neuromuscular function and balance of younger adults can be modified by the perception or predictions of an outcome. This study aimed to determine the effect of manipulating perception of postural stability on standing postural stability and gait of younger and older adults. 14 older adults and 14 younger adults completed quiet normal standing (NS) and tandem stance (TS) postural stability, and normal preferred (PWS) and fastest (FWS) walking speed gait assessments under three conditions. Conditions included control (CON) with no manipulation, and stable (STB) and unstab

Postural hyperventilation has been implicated as a cause of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), yet the precise mechanisms underlying the heightened breathing response remain unclear. This study challenges current hypotheses by revealing that exaggerated peripheral chemoreceptor activity is not the primary driver of postural hyperventilation. Instead, significant contributions from reduced stroke volume and compromised brain perfusion during orthostatic stress were identified. These findings shed light on our understanding of POTS pathophysiology, emphasizing the critical roles o

BACKGROUND: Functional status, postural dizziness (PD), and postural hypotension (PH) were important issues in older adults. Only one study on the relationship for the three of them in female was without adjusting some important associated factors. This study was intended to investigate the association of PD and PH with functional status in older people of both genders.
METHODS: Based on a stratified randomized cluster sampling, 1361 subjects ≥ 65 years in the community were recruited from Tainan City, Taiwan, from 2000 to 2001. PH was defined as a decrease in systolic/diastolic blood pressur

Sleep posture and movements offer insights into neurophysiological health and correlate with overall well-being and quality of life. Clinical practices utilise polysomnography for sleep assessment, which is intrusive, performed in unfamiliar environments, and requires trained personnel. While sensor technologies such as actigraphy are less invasive alternatives, concerns about their reliability and precision in clinical practice persist. Moreover, the field lacks a universally accepted algorithm, with methods ranging from raw signal thresholding to data-intensive classification models that may…

BACKGROUND: Balance Body Tape (BBT) is a recently developed taping-method with the aim to reduce pain and improve posture through change in movement behavior. However, the potential effects of a treatment with BBT are scarcely documented. Therefore, the aim with this study was to investigate the effect of a three-week Balance body tape-treatment on the intensity of perceived neck, shoulder and back pain and forward head posture.
METHODS: In this RCT study, subjects (n = 26), who reported being university students or having a sedentary work and experiencing pain in neck, back or shoulders, wer…

INTRODUCTION: People with haemophilic arthropathy (PWHA) have impairments in postural control. However, little is known about the effects of demanding conditions, including the unipedal stance and dual tasks, on postural control in PWHA.
AIM: Determine the effects of performing dual tasks while in the one-leg stance on postural sway and postural control complexity in PWHA vs. healthy active (HAG) and non-active (HNAG) groups of individuals.
METHODS: Fifteen PWHA and 34 healthy subjects (18 active and 16 non-active) were recruited. Vertical (V), mediolateral (ML) and anteroposterior (AP) cent

A number of case studies were followed for 10 years. Children suffering from postural defects, structural scoliosis and spinal osteochondrosis were separated from a normal group. Spinal mobility and posture were compared with the mobility of normal, healthy boys and girls aged 5-14 years. In postural defects curves similar to the physiologic one were observed. The range of motion was not physiologic in scoliosis. In this disease, rotation-flexion thoracic hypermobility with decreased lumbar flexion ability was found. A physiologic trend was found in spinal osteochondrosis, although sometimes t…

BACKGROUND: Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a heterogeneous condition. We stratified patients previously evaluated for POTS on the basis of supine resting cardiac output (CO) or with the complaint of platypnea or "shortness of breath" during orthostasis. We hypothesize that postural hyperventilation is one cause of POTS and that hyperventilation-associated POTS occurs when initial reduction in CO is sufficiently large. We also propose that circulatory abnormalities normalize with restoration of CO2.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Fifty-eight enrollees with POTS were compared with 16 healthy vol

Automated posture quality assessment has become increasingly important in health and wellness technology. However, existing methods predominantly provide point estimates without quantifying prediction confidence, posing a critical limitation in safety-sensitive applications where incorrect assessments may lead to improper guidance. This paper addresses this gap by introducing a reliability-oriented evaluation framework based on Bayesian Liquid Neural Networks (LNNBI). Unlike conventional approaches, our method simultaneously delivers a quality score and a principled uncertainty measure derived…

OBJECTIVES: The psychophysical demands of playing a musical instrument at a professional level pose significant challenges to the musculoskeletal system. Maintaining a position adapted to the instrument for long hours, every day and for many years may result in future postural abnormalities and chronic health problems. This study evaluated the 3-dimensional spinal and pelvic posture of professional saxophone players compared to non-musician controls.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study included 60 men aged 20-30 years: 30 professional saxophone players with an average playing experience of mean (…

Cerebellar dysfunction leads to postural instability. Recent work in freely moving rodents has transformed investigations of cerebellar contributions to posture. However, the combined complexity of terrestrial locomotion and the rodent cerebellum motivate new approaches to perturb cerebellar function in simpler vertebrates. Here, we adapted a validated chemogenetic tool (TRPV1/capsaicin) to describe the role of Purkinje cells - the output neurons of the cerebellar cortex - as larval zebrafish swam freely in depth. We achieved both bidirectional control (activation and ablation) of Purkinje cel…

Background: Occupational low back pain (LBP) is a pervasive health issue that significantly impacts productivity and contributes to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). Inadequate lifting postures are a primary, modifiable risk factor associated with LBP, making early detection of unsafe practices crucial to mitigating occupational injuries. Our study aims to address these limitations by developing a markerless, smartphone-based camera system integrated with a deep learning model capable of accurately classifying lifting postures. Material and Method: We recruited 50 healthy adults …
