CrO3 was found to affect norepinephrine release in a biphasic manner: at concentrations above 100 microM, it inhibited, while at concentrations below 10 microM, it enhanced DMPP- and high K+-induced [3H]norepinephrine (NE) release from bovine adrenal medullary cells. Similar effects were found for K2Cr2O7. CrO3 inhibited the 45Ca2+ uptake induced by DMPP and high K+, suggesting that the voltage-gated Ca2+ channels are possible sites of the inhibitory action of CrO3. Analysis of positive patch testing during the last years revealed increased occurrence of contact allergy against arnica. Our investigations were done at the Department of Dermatology of the General Hospital, Linz. We take the view that the frequency of this contact allergy represents the consequence of using household remedies containing arnica.

An outbreaks of cases of airborne irritant contact dermatitis developed among incinerator workers employed in a sewage treatment facility. Contamination of the workplace and workers' clothing by sludge from the interstices of an incinerator exhaust fan proved to be the cause of the problem. The irritancy of the sludge was determined by tests in rabbits. There was no recurrence of the problem after the institution of hygienic measures designed to control contact with the sludge during subsequent fan maintenance procedures.

Using personal air sampling exposure to hexavalent and trivalent chromium was measured in 22 workers mainly exposed to Cr(VI) and in 15 workers mainly exposed to Cr(III) as basic chromium sulphate.
