A rapid air titration method for determining SO2 concentration in inhalation chambers has been validated using the pararosaniline-formaldehyde (PRA) method of West and Gaeke. This air-titration (iodate) method is an adaptation of iodometric methods using a starch indicator. Potassium iodate and an excess of potassium iodide are used in the reaction. Sampling is completed in ten minutes or less and concentration is calculated by use of a simple formula. We found that difluorocarbene generated from chlorodifluoromethane with 50% aqueous sodium hydroxide reacts with lipophilic tertiary amines 1a-g giving difluoromethyltrialkylammonium chlorides 2a-g in high yields. Similarly, difluoromethyltrialkylammonium iodides 3h-l, nitrates 4h-k, or isothiocyanates 5i,j were synthesized from hydrophilic tertiary amines 1h-l and the corresponding sodium or potassium salts. The process is catalytic with respect to the base used.

Gardeners, florists, lawn laborers and agricultural workers are routinely exposed to Sporothrix schenckii, as are those working in building supplies and nurseries. The primary lesion is an ulcer or a chancre, which is followed by the development of a lymphangitic cord with nodules along its course. Biopsy is not necessary and can worsen the infection. The culture technique is simple and provides definitive diagnosis. Systemic potassium iodide therapy rarely fails. Disseminated disease is rare except in immunosuppressed patients.

Antimicrobials are used emperically in a variety of inflammatory dermatoses such as rosacea and dermatitis herpetiformis, although these diseases are not believed to be of bacterial etiology. We have used potassium iodide ointment to induce follicular pustules and have found in this in vivo model properties of antimicrobials not related to their antibacterial actions. Topical demethylchlortetracycline and erythromycin (5%) lead to suppression of KI-induced inflammation (erythema, pustules) and systemic use of these drugs as well as diaminodiphenylsulfone produces the same effect.

Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) occurs most frequently in patients with underlying thyroid disease and is generally believed to be due to the iodine contamination of amiodarone and iodine released by the metabolism of the drug. A 19-year-old woman with Graves' disease developed thyroid storm 8 days after radioactive iodine therapy. The clinical manifestations of thyroid storm promptly improved after treatment with large doses of propylthiouracil, potassium iodide, propranolol hydrochloride, and dexamethasone. Four days after discontinuing dexamethasone, the syndrome recurred and was corrected by reinstitution of the glucocorticoid. We conclude that dexamethasone was an important adjunct for treating thyroid storm and was effective mainly by reducing peripheral triiodothyronine production.

A young man presented at Lugala Lutheran Hospital (Tanzania) with an ulcer on his lower leg which had developed over the past 9 weeks. Subcutaneous nodules and plaques were found all the way up to his groin; this observation prompted a strong suspicion that the patient had the lymphocutaneous form of sporotrichosis which had not been seen at this hospital before. The diagnosis was confirmed histopathologically. The patient was then treated with saturated solution of potassium iodide.

The authors report a case of granulomatous mastitis associated with erythema nodosum and oligoarthritis. The skin and joint symptoms improved with potassium iodide. The breast lesion clinically simulated a tumor of high malignant grade. Granulomatous mastitis is a benign and rare disease. Its interest lies in the possible association with systemic manifestations and in its steroid responsiveness. This condition has been recently described as a distinct entity. When associated with systemic manifestations, sarcoidosis should be considered.

The influence of drugs on ciliary beat frequency in the intrapulmonary airways of rats was studied in vitro. Sympathomimetic drugs significantly increased the ciliary beat frequency. Thyroid vascularity was measured in 101 thyrotoxic patients by analysis of 99mTc pertechnetate thyroid flow studies obtained with a gamma camera--minicomputer system. The diffusely hyperplastic goitres tended to have higher vascularity than the toxic multinodular goitres, and many of the solitary toxic nodules had vascularity results within normal limits. Potassium iodide therapy, 60 mg b.d. for 10-14 days results in a dramatic reduction in thyroid vascularity in diffuse thyroid hyperplasia and toxic multinodular goitre but the effect on toxic nodules was marginal.
