Imitating the natural way of infection of Farmer's lung disease, we succeeded in inducing acute lesions of Farmer's lung disease in rabbits by the dry powder of thermohygroscopicus. Histopathological examination revealed typical interstitial pneumonitis, alveolitis and bronchiolitis. One week after the inhalation of the dry powder of thermohygroscopicus, the precipitins could be detected in the rabbits' serum by immunoblotting. Depending on the lung lesions of rabbits, we discussed the pathogenetic mechanisms of Farmer's Lung.

The objective of this study was to detect the presence of antibodies by the complement-mediated lysis test in patients with paracoccidioidomycosis, before and after treatment, and to correlate them with the clinical form of the disease and with the levels of precipitin and fluorescent anti-P. brasiliensis antibodies. Sera from 778 patients presenting a hospitals in Zaria and Kaduna, northern Nigeria, were tested for amoebic precipitins by the gel diffusion test; 106 (14%) were positive. Positive tests were obtained in 16 of 18 patients with an amoebic liver abscess, in 17 of 31 patients with amoebic dysentery and in three of 100 apparently healthy controls. Positive tests, and clinical cases of amoebiasis, were seen more frequently in the wet season than in the dry season.

To evaluate the specificity of serologic tests for histoplasmosis in an endemic area, we studied sera from 104 consecutive healthy blood donors, testing for antibodies to either histoplasmin or Histoplasma yeast antigen, using complement fixation (CF), radioimmunoassay (RIA), and radial immunodiffusion (ID). The agglutination of avian red cells, particularly pigeon and budgerigar cells, by sera from patients who had been exposed to birds and had respiratory symptoms, as well as from healthy bird fanciers, has been used to detect the presence of avian specific antibody. A 61 year old agricultural worker, without any respiratory past history, presented with a pulmonary fibrosis of rapid and fatal outcome. This was due to an extrinsic allergic fibrosing alveolitis of the Farmer's lung type. A search for precipitins "vis-à-vis" Micropolyspora faeni was strongly positive in the serum and broncho-alveolar lavage. Specific IgA antibodies to M. faeni, as well as specific antigenic fractions of M. faeni were demonstrated in the broncho-alveolar lavage. This IgA was almost certainly produced locally.

Hypersensitivity to ingested hen's egg yolk is described in a 65-year-old female patient. The patient's symptoms started in adult life and coincided with the acquisition of a parrot as a household pet. The bird's presence caused complaints of allergic rhinitis, while the ingestion of eggs caused urticaria and angioedema. Analysis of sequential blood serum samples revealed high levels of IgE antibodies to egg yolk and to various bird sera, but no precipitins. RAST-inhibition experiments indicated that the primary sensitization may have been to antigens from the parrot.

The glycoprotein, but no other virion protein, of vesicular stomatitis virus was solubilized by the nonionic detergent Triton X-100 in low ionic strength buffer. The solubilized viral glycoprotein induced the synthesis of antibody that formed a single precipitin line with the glycoprotein and that neutralized the infectivity of the virus. The neutralizing activity of the antibody was efficiently blocked by purified glycoprotein.
