Internationally, best practice for prison health care recommends transferring health service provision from corrections to health authorities. Although it is expected that this change will result in improved health care, there is little evidence of evaluation. This article used qualitative interviews with health service providers to gain insight into the health needs of women's prisons in Queensland, Australia, both prior to and after the transition in health care service provision. We found that service providers identified that problems persisted regardless of service provider and that impro

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of intellectual disability (ID) in the prison setting has scarcely been studied. Although some approximations o … prison population showed that ID levels were higher than those in the community, especially amongst prisoners requiring specialized psychiatric care. What is also evident is that adequate resources are required in prisons and in the community to provide better care for people with intellectual disabilities who are in the pathway of the criminal justice syst …

The historic increase in U.S. incarceration rates made the transition from prison to community common for poor, prime-age men and women. Leaving prison presents the challenge of social integration--of connecting with family and finding housing and a means of subsistence. The authors study variation in social integration in the first months after prison release with data from the Boston Reentry Study, a unique panel survey of 122 newly released prisoners. The data indicate severe material hardship immediately after incarceration. Over half of sample respondents were unemployed, two-thirds recei…

BACKGROUND: Tattooing in prison represents a unique combination of risk factors for blood borne virus (BBV) transmission because it is illicitly performed by untrained operators with homemade, unsterile, and frequently-shared equipment. It occurs in a setting where a high proportion of people are already infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and other BBVs.
OBJECTIVES: This study measured the frequency of tattoo acquisition by prisoners inside and outside prison, and the associations between tattooing, injecting drug use, and HCV infection risk.
METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducte…

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence and causes of vitamin A deficiency disorders (VADD) in adult male prisoners in Nakuru, Kenya.
METHODS: A total of 1048 male prisoners aged > or =16 years in Nakuru Government of Kenya prison in Nakuru, Kenya were examined by an ophthalmologist for signs of xerophthalmia. Two hundred and forty-one cases with xerophthalmia and 448 controls randomly selected from the remaining prison population were interviewed about risk factors for xerophthalmia and blood samples were taken to measure serum retinol and haemoglobin.
RESULTS: 23.6% (95% CI = 21.1-26.3%) of …

At the end of 2005, approximately 7 million people (or 1 of every 33 American adults) were either in jail, in prison, or on parole. Compared with the general public, newly incarcerated inmates have an increased prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus infection, hepatitis B virus infection, hepatitis C virus infection, syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. While incarcerated, inmates are at an increased risk for the acquisition of blood-borne pathogens, sexually transmitted diseases, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus infection, and infection with

The health care received by prisoners in the area of tissue and organ transplantation is not well discussed or documented. We encountered a prisoner with newly diagnosed chronic myelogenous leukemia who was a candidate for allogeneic bone marrow transplantation and had two HLA-identical siblings who were willing to donate bone marrow. Based on humanitarian, constitutional, and ethical considerations, we suggest that the prisoner (patient) should receive the same health care as individuals who are not incarcerated and that the costs of care should play no greater role for prisoners than for oth…

BACKGROUND: Much concern has been expressed about the high prevalence of tuberculosis in prisons in industrialised countries. Since there is almost no information from developing countries, we investigated the rate of pulmonary tuberculosis in a large prison in Malawi.
METHODS: Between May and July, 1996; we carried out an active case-finding survey in Zomba Central Prison, Malawi, through the National Tuberculosis Control Programme. We interviewed prisoners, and those with a cough of at least 1 week's duration were screened by sputum-smear microscopy. If microscopy was negative, prisoners un…

OBJECTIVES: Knowing about the rate of tuberculous infection and disease in prison population and workers in Huelva prison, and the association of tuberculosis with the sociosanitary risk factors.
EQUIPMENT AND METHODS: Descriptive research for a year in 141 male prisoners at the age of 20 to 52 years old, from the 1sT of February in 1994 to the 1sT in 1995.
RESULTS: The prevalence on tuberculous infection is 46.4% (accumulative incidence); and tuberculous disease 3.5% (accumulative incidence 1.4%) on the prisoners and the prevalence on tuberculous infection on the prison officers is 18.8% (t…

Fifty consecutive admissions to the psychiatric division in a central metropolitan goal were given DSM III diagnoses and their psychiatric, social and criminal histories analysed. Seventy-two per cent suffered from schizophrenic, affective or organic mental illness, 56% had chronic physical disabilities and 84% had had previous in-patient treatment in either hospital or prison or both. Fifty-four per cent exhibited psychopathology that most clinicians would have thought required urgent attention. Of the current offences committed by this group 54% were against the person (murder, assaults, sex

BACKGROUND: The convergence of an ageing prison population and increasing numbers of women in custody globally has resulted in a growing sub-population of females of menopausal age experiencing imprisonment; however, this specific area is rarely studied.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the experiences and support needs of women in prison transitioning to the menopause.
DESIGN: A systematic review performed to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses.
DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: A thorough search of multiple databases, including Web of Science, ProQuest, JSTR, Ovid Med

In Queensland, Australia, adults in custodial facilities do not have discretionary access to over-the-counter (OTC) medications for mild pain relief and management. This study evaluated a trial allowing prisoners in male and female units at a regional Queensland correctional facility to purchase OTC medications from the prison store. The trial aligned with human rights legislation, international obligations, and the requirement for community equivalence of health care for prisoners. Queensland is the first jurisdiction in Australasia to undertake such a trial. We analyze the results from focus…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors which influence male prisoners' motivation for, and engagement in, exercise and subsequent healthy behaviours.
DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: The first authors conducted 20 semi-structured interviews with male prisoners inside an English medium-security male prison. Interviews were recorded and transcribed, themes were identified using thematic analysis and a critical realist perspective applied to understand objective processes behind prisoners' experiences and shared meanings of exercise and engaging in healthy behaviours in prison…
