Prisoners' weight and waist circumference were measured 6 and 12 months after imprisonment. Variables known to be associated with differences in lifestyle behaviors and obesity were considered as covariates in the study. The obesity prevalence rate increased 50% from baseline (16%) to the 6-month follow-up (24%). Obesity prevalence rates then declined 4-fold from the 6-month (24%) to the 12-month follow-up (6%). While time in prison w

Problems in prisons worldwide, with a particular focus on Russia.

The link between prisons and disease has existed as long as prisons have been used for punishment. The prisons of the world still have high rates of infection with hepatitis, HIV, mental illness, and tuberculosis. TB is a major cause of death in prisons, mainly as a result of overcrowding, poor physical conditions, and lack of adequate treatment. The priorities of prisoners and of public health officials are often at odds with the priorities of prison administrators and prosecutors. Prison health care should be independent of prison administration and should be answerable only to the national …

The moral battleground of a prison psychiatrist.

ObjectiveMoral distress occurs when we know what the right thing to do is in accordance with our ethical principles and values, but institutional or other constraints make this difficult1. As psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees, we are asked to assume responsibilities and balance competing obligations to our patients, organisations, and the public. I offer a first-person narrative of the moral distress experienced by a prison psychiatrist. I hope it resonates with other psychiatrists and psychiatry trainees dedicated to addressing the moral challenges in mental health and inspires those to h

Debunking the Stanford Prison Experiment.

The Stanford Prison Experiment (SPE) is one of psychology's most famous studies. It has been criticized on many grounds, and yet a majority of textbook authors have ignored these criticisms in their discussions of the SPE, thereby misleading both students and the general public about the study's questionable scientific validity. Data collected from a thorough investigation of the SPE archives and interviews with 15 of the participants in the experiment further question the study's scientific merit. These data are not only supportive of previous criticisms of the SPE, such as the presence of de

Suicide by self-disembowelment in prison.

Self-inflicted abdominal injuries are uncommon. Fatal self-inflicted abdominal injury is a rare occurrence, especially as a custodial death. A prisoner under-trial for attempted suicide was in judicial custody and was found unconscious in a pool of blood in the bathroom with cut open abdomen and exposed coils of intestine. The bathroom was found locked from inside and had to be forcibly opened. In spite of immediate hospitalisation and appropriate emergency surgical treatment, he succumbed on the same day. As the person had previously made several futile attempts to commit suicide and was in f
