BACKGROUND: We aimed to evaluate the characteristics of hospitalizations for radiation proctitis (RP).
METHODS: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) was analyzed to identify RP hospitalizations for 2016 and 2017. Outcomes included mortality, predictors of mortality, mean length of stay (LOS), mean total hospital cost (THC), and numerous system-based complications.

This prospective randomised controlled study of 40 patients could not show a statistically significant advantage with 6 months of pentoxifylline compared with standard measures for late radiation-induced rectal bleeding. This study explored the use of transperineal intestinal ultrasound (TPIUS) for assessment of ulcerative colitis (UC) in pregnancy. 8 pregnant women with UC underwent TP-US, clinical assessment and fecal calprotectin. TP-IUS was well tolerated and feasible with adequate rectal views obtained in all trimesters of pregnancy. No correlation between TP-IUS, clinical, or biochemical rectal disease activity assessment was found in this small cohort. Further studies are required to define the optimal technique and references ranges in the pregnant population.

Infectious proctitis by sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in incidence and should be considered in homosexual patients with rectal symptoms. In this case, we show a patient with proctitis and perianal disease caused by Chlamydia trachomatis that could be diagnosed as another anorectal disease such as inflammatory bowel disease if the clinical history is not taken into account. A high level of suspicion is crucial, in order to avoid an incorrect diagnosis, delayed antibiotic therapy and the development of complications.
