From a clinical perspective, prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) is a valuable target for both diagnosis and radioligand therapy (RLT) of prostate cancer. The term 'specific' has been used to characterize a histologic hallmark of overexpression in the membrane of most prostate cancer. Many PSMA ligands have been developed since the previous decade and have been used in several clinical trials and clinical studies. However, procedure, specification, protocol, interpretation criteria, radiation dose, and cost-effectiveness of PSMA ligands have not been fully explained. Regardless of worldw

The use of PET/CT with prostate-specific membrane antigen radioligands for staging prostate cancer patients presenting a biochemical recurrence is increasing. As a consequence, the number of reports of diagnostic pitfall of this imaging modality is also increasing. A 75-year-old man referred for a second episode of biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer presented an isolated intense prostate-specific membrane antigen-11 uptake from a right lung abnormality. This abnormality was suggestive of pulmonary vein varix on contrast-enhanced lung CT. The uptake remained stable 1 month after starting

BACKGROUND: The Finnish Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (FinRSPC), the largest component of the European Randomized Study of Screening for Prostate Cancer (ERSPC), showed a smaller, nonsignificant reduction in prostate cancer-specific mortality by systematic prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening compared with the overall ERSPC results. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) reduce inflammation and also PSA elevations due to intraprostatic inflammation.
OBJECTIVE: To explore whether NSAID usage modifies the effects of PSA-based screening on prostate cancer in…

PURPOSE: Patients with end stage renal disease plus prostate cancer are ineligible to receive a renal transplant at most centers until an acceptable cancer-free period is demonstrated. To our knowledge previously established prostate specific antigen reference ranges have not been validated in patients with end stage renal disease. We determined age stratified 95th percentile prostate specific antigen reference ranges and the prostate cancer detection rate at specific prostate specific antigen intervals for patients with end stage renal disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively revie

BACKGROUND: Hepsin (HPN), a type II trans-membrane serine protease, has been reported to be one of the most up regulated genes in prostate cancer. The aim of the present study was to find out immuno-histochemistry based phenotypic expression of HPN in formalin fixed paraffin embedded sections of prostate cancer compared with that in benign prostatic hyperplasia, in a prospective clinical setting, to know the differential status of HPN expression in benign and malignant prostatic disease.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Tissue biopsies of histologically proven cases of prostatic cancers (48), benign pr

OBJECTIVE: To further analyse the relationship of c-reactive protein (CRP) levels to prostate cancer, by measuring CRP in men with prostate … ntly higher in men with bone metastases. There was also a significant correlation of CRP level with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in those with cancer. Because PSA is correlated with disease stage, multiple linear regression was used with CRP as the dependent variable, and PSA and disease stage as independent variables. The regression was significant overall (P < 0.001) …

BACKGROUND: Several methods for the identification of patients with prostate carcinoma have been proposed to enhance the clinical usefulness of prostate specific antigen (PSA). However, it remains unclear which method is superior in practical use. The authors attempted prospectively to identify the most powerful method with which to detect prostate carcinoma, especially among patients with intermediate PSA levels.
METHODS: Between October 1997 and August 1999, systematic sextant biopsies were performed on 281 patients, including 147 with PSA levels between 4.1 ng/mL and 10.0 ng/mL. The clinic

PURPOSE: We evaluated differences in the prostate cancer detection rate among black and white men with serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels between 2.6 and 4.0 ng./ml., and benign findings on digital rectal examination.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From May 1995 through June 1997 we screened 14,209 white and 1,004 black men 50 years old or older with serum PSA and rectal examinations at 6-month intervals. If PSA was greater than 2.5 ng./ml. or the rectal examination was suspicious for cancer, we recommended an ultrasound guided sextant biopsy of the prostate. We compared differences in clin

Screening was performed on 102 patients aged 60 years or older who visited the Outpatient Department of Internal Medicine in Tane General Hospital between June 1994 and May 1995. Of those screened, 36 patients (35.3%) had elevated prostate specific antigen (PSA) values, and 20 of them visited the Urological Department, and underwent digital rectal examination (DRE) and transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) for further screening. Of the 16 patients who underwent ultrasound guided biopsies of the prostate, 7 patients were found to have prostate cancer. Therefore, the cancer detection rate was 6.9%,

We present 3 of 25 patients with massive, occult transition zone cancers 7 to 86 cc in volume. Despite serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels of 150 to 456 ng./ml. (Yang polyclonal assay), all 3 were organ confined at radical prostatectomy and have undetectable serum PSA levels by an ultrasensitive assay at 300 to 650 days postoperatively. This clinical syndrome includes a highly elevated PSA level, benign prostatic hyperplasia on digital rectal examination, a nondiagnostic transrectal ultrasound and frequently negative transrectal or perineal needle biopsies. We prospectively studied 103 men who had normal results on digital prostate examinations but had bladder outlet obstruction secondary to prostatic hypertrophy and needed transurethral prostatectomy. All men underwent a preoperative transrectal ultrasonographic examination of the prostate and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) level determination. A total of 30 cancers were ultimately detected, 22 (73%) of which were detected preoperatively by either an abnormal ultrasonogram or elevated PSA levels (or both). Eight of these men were spared transurethral prostatectomy and had definitive treatment b…

INTRODUCTION: Benign enlargement of the prostate (BEP) is a common urological condition among aging males, often leading to lower urinary tract symptoms and an increase in serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels. The clinical challenge lies in distinguishing benign prostatic hyperplasia from prostate cancer, as both conditions elevate PSA levels. This study aims to investigate the correlation between prostate volume and PSA levels in BEP patients to refine diagnostic accuracy and improve management strategies.
METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on 100 patients dia…

BACKGROUND: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a tumor marker helpful in the diagnosis and follow-up of prostate cancer. However, PSA level may rise due to other causes than prostate cancer such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), acute prostatitis, chronic bacteria and a bacterial prostatitis. Total serum PSA (TPSA) and free prostate-specific antigen (FPSA) levels of patients with prostatitis symptoms as well as these levels in male population at risk but without clinical prostatic diseases (>40-years-old) with regard to age should be documented in order to increase the sensitivity and spe…

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein produced in the prostate and is widely used as a biomarker for the diagnosis of prostate cancer (PCa). Although elevated PSA levels are often associated with PCa, several noncancerous conditions can also lead to increased PSA. In addition to total PSA, various PSA isoforms are detectable in the blood of patients, and their levels may differ depending on the underlying pathophysiological condition, whether benign or malignant. Measuring serum PSA levels alone is not sufficient to detect PCa, leading to widespread overdiagnosis and overtreatment.…

INTRODUCTION: Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) combined with prostate-specific antigen density (PSAd) has emerged as an effective risk-stratification tool for guiding prostate biopsy decisions. This study aimed to determine the optimal, clinically feasible biopsy strategy by combining the mpMRI Prostate Imaging-Reporting and Data System (PI-RADS) score and PSAd to minimize unnecessary biopsies while maximizing the detection of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa; Gleason score {GS} ≥7), using transperineal targeted and systematic biopsy as the reference standard.

Photothermal therapy (PTT) in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) enables deep-tissue penetration and reduced off-target damage, offering a promising approach for localized cancer ablation. A major challenge, however, lies in achieving efficient and tumor-specific accumulation of photothermal agents. In this study, we developed a prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-targeted NIR-II photothermal nanoplatform based on an organic semiconducting polymer (OSP12). The OSP12 core was encapsulated with DSPE-PEG-Mal and covalently conjugated with ACUPA, a high-affinity PSMA liga

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Achieving undetectable prostate-specific antigen (PSA) has been correlated with improved outcomes for patients with metastatic prostate cancer. Comprehensive involved site radiotherapy (ISRT) consisting of local therapy to the prostate and radiation to all visible metastases has emerged as a method of treatment intensification for prostate cancer oligometastases. The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency and predictors of undetectable PSA in patients who received radiotherapy for oligometastases.
METHODS: Thirty-five consecutive men with oligometastat…
