Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) regenerate blood cells upon hematopoietic injuries. During homeostasis, HSCs are maintained in a low reactive oxygen species (ROS) state to prevent exhaustion. However, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in controlling HSC regeneration is still unclear. Here, we find increased NO during HSC regeneration with an accumulation of protein aggregation. Portal vein thrombus (PVT) is a challenge in liver transplantation. How PVT develops in cirrhotic patients who already have coagulopathy is unclear. This study aimed to investigate possible contributing factors to PVT in cirrhotic patients. A total of 349 cirrhotic patients who waited liver transplantation were included in this study and 48 of them had PVT. For all the patients, the mean age was 53.5 ± 9.0 year old, and 75.9% of the patients were male. There were 233 (66.8%) patients who had either hepatitis B or C. Surfactant protein-D (SP-D) is a regulator of pulmonary innate immunity whose oligomeric state can be altered through S-nitrosylation to regulate its signaling function in macrophages. Here, we examined how nitrosylation of SP-D alters the phenotypic response of macrophages to stimuli both in vivo and in vitro. Dural Venous Sinus Thrombosis (DVST) is a sporadic cause of headache. DVST is a recherché complication of maxillary sinus infection. Maxillary sinusitis infection may spread directly to orbit via lamina papyracea and it is expedited by the presence veins of breschet. The authors present a clinical case of dural sinus thrombosis with protein S deficiency and also describe an effective management approach for DVST.

A general strategy of delivering hydrogen persulfide (H2S2) is described herein. Esterase- and phosphatase-sensitive H2S2 prodrugs with tunable release rates have been synthesized. Their utility is validated in examining protein S-persulfidation. There are several conditions that can lead to portal vein thrombosis (PVT), including including infection, malignancies, and coagulation disorders. Anew condition of interest is protein C and S deficiencies, associated with hypercoagulation and recurrent venous thromboembolism. We report the case of a non-cirrhotic 63-year-old male diagnosed with acute superior mesenteric vein thrombosis and PVT and combined deficiencies in proteins C and S, recanalized by short-term low molecular heparin plus oral warfarin therapy.

Inherited hypercoagulopathies such as protein C and S deficiency usually lead to the formation of venous thrombi in clinical practice; however, they rarely lead to arterial thrombosis. It has been demonstrated that both protein C and S deficiency may lead to myocardial infarctions. However, our literature review revealed no reports of left main coronary artery thrombi caused by protein C and S deficiency. This paper presents a case of a left main coronary artery thrombus resulting from protein C and S deficiency in a young patient with normal coronary arteries.

Purpura fulminans and venous thrombosis are rare complications of chickenpox. We report the case of a 6 year old with no history individuals who experienced cerebral thrombophlebitis, 3 weeks after varicella. Bacillus anthracis, a causative agent of anthrax, is able to germinate and survive within macrophages. A recent study suggested that B. anthracis-derived nitric oxide (bNO) is a key aspect of bacterial defense that protects bacterial DNA from oxidative burst in the macrophages. OBJECTIVE: The serum S-100 beta protein level is a specific marker of damage to the central nerve system (CNS). We studied its significance in pediatric cardiac surgery as a possible marker of CNS damage.
METHODS: Subjects were 18 consecutive pediatric patients aged 12 days to 13 years (mean: 2.8 years) undergoing open-heart surgery. We measured the serum S-100 beta protein level using ELISA (SRL Co. Ltd., Tokyo) immediately after inducing anesthesia and immediately, 12 hours, and 24 hours after weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB).
RESULTS: None had postoperative neurological symptoms.

A sensitive sandwich enzyme immunoassay for identification of brain S-100 protein in blood or bloodstains containing brain tissue is described. A polystyrene ball coated with rabbit anti-S-100 protein IgG was incubated with human S-100 protein, and then with anti-S-100 Fab'-peroxidase conjugate.
