Pheophorbide A from Acrotrema agastyamalayanum: A potent antibiofilm agent targeting Proteus mirabilis.

The antibiofilm potential of the hexane extract of the rare and endangered endemic plant Acrotrema agastyamalayanum was determined against Proteus mirabilis. The biofilm-inhibitory activity of the hexane extract was evaluated by crystal violet quantification and light microscopy, which showed 89% inhibition at 11 mg/mL. The hexane extract exhibited 89% inhibition at 11 mg/mL as determined by crystal violet quantification and light microscopy. Pheophorbide A (PA), the active and most abundant chlorophyll derivative in the hexane extract, was identified based on its molecular ion fragmentation p

Cultivable Skin Mycobiota of Healthy and Diseased Blind Cave Salamander (Proteus anguinus).

Proteus anguinus is a neotenic cave salamander, endemic to the Dinaric Karst and a symbol of world natural heritage. It is classified as "vulnerable" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and is one of the EU priority species in need of strict protection. Due to inaccessibility of their natural underground habitat, scientific studies of the olm have been conducted mainly in captivity, where the amphibians are particularly susceptible to opportunistic microbial infections. In this report, we focused on the diversity of cultivable commensal fungi isolated from the skin of

Misaligned foveal morphology and sector retinal dysfunction in AKT1-mosaic Proteus syndrome.

PURPOSE: Proteus syndrome arises as a result of a post-zygotic mosaic activating mutation in the AKT1 oncogene, causing a disproportionate overgrowth of affected tissues. A small number of ocular complications have been reported. We present the unique findings in a patient who had molecular confirmation of AKT1 mosaicism alongside fulfilling the clinical criteria for Proteus syndrome. METHODS: Pattern electroretinography, visual evoked potentials and multifocal electroretinography testing were performed alongside detailed retinal imaging and clinical examination to detail the ophthalmic chara

Virulence targeted inhibitory effect of linalool against the exclusive uropathogen Proteus mirabilis.

Proteus mirabilis is one of the leading causes of catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTI) in individuals with prolonged urinary catheterization. Since, biofilm assisted antibiotic resistance is reported to complicate the treatment strategies of P. mirabilis infections, the present study was aimed to attenuate biofilm and virulence factor production in P. mirabilis. Linalool is a naturally occurring monoterpene alcohol found in a wide range of flowers and spice plants and has many biological applications. In this study, linalool exhibited concentration dependent anti-biofilm activity against crystalli

CTX-M-1 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Proteus mirabilis in Greece.

To examine the dissemination of CTX-M-type extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) in clinical isolates of Proteus mirabilis, 91 nonrepetitive ESBL-producing P. mirabilis were collected from infected patients in a tertiary Greek hospital during September, 2001, to May, 2004. A bla (CTX-M) gene was amplified in one isolate (strain A328), but bla (CTX-M) was not detected in any of the remaining ESBL producers. Sequencing results showed that P. mirabilis A328 produced a CTX-M-1 enzyme while PCR mapping of the genetic element carrying bla (CTX-M-1) revealed that the gene was located downstream o

Detection of OXA-23 and OXA-58 in Proteus mirabilis by immunochromatographic assays.

UNLABELLED: Proteus mirabilis is increasingly recognized as a carrier of carbapenemases, which are particularly difficult to identify, since most isolates have low carbapenem MICs. Additionally, most phenotypic tests (e.g. CARBA NP, mCIM) have insufficient sensitivity in this species. Furthermore, OXA-23 and OXA-58 are frequent in carbapenemase-producing Proteus but not included in most molecular and immunochromatographic assays for carbapenemase detection in Enterobacterales. The RESIST ACINETO lateral flow test (CORIS BioConcept) was recently developed for the detection of OXA-23, OXA-58/OXA

Isolation and characterization of a bacteriophage targeting Proteus mirabilis for use in culture media.

Proteus mirabilis is an important opportunistic bacterium that affects both animal and human health. One of the key characteristics of this bacterium is its distinctive zonal spreading on solid media. This movement, known as swarming, complicates the isolation and identification of pathogenic agents present alongside P. mirabilis in clinical samples. The aim of this study was to isolate a lytic bacteriophage targeting P. mirabilis to prevent its growth and evaluate the use of these phages in cultures of clinical samples contaminated with Proteus. A phage designated as P5663 was isolated using

Pulmonary Involvement in Proteus Syndrome: Clinical and Imaging Correlates in a Rare Case.

Proteus syndrome is an uncommon, sporadic disorder characterized by progressive and heterogeneous overgrowth of tissues, resulting in distorted and asymmetric development. In most individuals, Proteus syndrome has minimal to no manifestations at birth but progresses during childhood and adolescence. Clinical manifestations of the disease include isolated asymmetric hemihyperplasia, isolated asymmetric macrodactyly, subcutaneous masses, plantar and palmar cerebriform fibrous overgrowth, exostoses, epidermal nevi, and scoliosis. Cardiothoracic structures are less commonly involved, and the manif

Asymmetric urinary lesions associated with Proteus mirabilis infection in a beef calf.

An 8-mo-old Japanese Black beef heifer calf was presented with anorexia, dysuria, and abdominal pain. Ultrasonographically, the left renal pelvis and calyces were markedly dilated and contained numerous calculi; the right renal pelvis was filled with hyperechoic material without obvious calculi. Despite supportive care and antimicrobial treatment with ceftiofur, the calf died 4 d after presentation. Autopsy revealed severe hydronephrosis with numerous struvite calculi in the left kidney and advanced pyonephrosis in the right kidney. Proteus mirabilis was isolated antemortem from urine and post

A Rare Complication of Proteus Brain Abscess Due to Coccidioidomycosis Causing Hydrocephalus.

Proteus mirabilis is a very common gram-negative facultative anaerobe seen in urinary tract infections. This rod-shaped bacterium tends to cause urolithiasis via its ability to alkalinize the urine. However, in some cases, this bacterium has been shown to cause bacteremia as well as other complicated infections. Here we would like to present a rare case of Proteus mirabilis that has invaded the brain in a patient that has a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt placed due to coccidioidal meningitis causing hydrocephalus. We would also like to discuss the importance of the monitoring of VP shunt and

Effectiveness of ozonized saline solution in the treatment of Proteus spp. bacterial cystitis.

Bacterial cystitis is a common clinical problem among cats and dogs and is one of the main reasons for the administration of antimicrobials. This can cause serious damage to public and animal health, as this practice facilitates the selection of bacteria that are multidrug-resistant to antibiotics. In this context, it is urgent to understand and validate therapeutic modalities that complement antimicrobial treatment in cystitis cases. Ozone therapy has been proposed by scientists owing to the various mechanisms of action in a range of pathologies, both in human and animal medicine. This paper

Proteus Syndrome: A Rare Disease Of Disproportionate And Asymmetric Overgrowth Of Connective Tissue.

Proteus syndrome is a rare disease manifested by progressive segmental overgrowth involving the skeletal, Cutaneous, subcutaneous, and nervous systems. We report the case of a 24-year-old female who was born with no obvious abnormality at birth. From the age of 1 year, she developed asymmetric enlargement of her left upper limb and bilateral lower limbs leading to enlargement of the right-hand phalanges with radial deviation, enlargement of the right big toe, lateral deviation of left foot, and discrepancy in the length of lower extremities and kyphoscoliosis. She had become bed-bound for the

Vitamin C Intake and Risk of Prostate Cancer: The Montreal PROtEuS Study.

Background: Vitamin C is a reducing agent and free radical scavenger, acting as antioxidant in plasma membranes and within cells. Based on these properties, a role for vitamin C in cancer incidence has been suspected. There are as yet few large population-based studies focusing on prostate cancer, with the preponderant evidence leaning toward the absence of an association. Nevertheless, many previous studies overlooked prostate cancer aggressiveness, as well as screening and detection issues, which could bias potential associations. Methods: The Prostate Cancer and Environment Study (PROtEuS)
