Unpacking reappraisal: a systematic review of fMRI studies of distancing and reinterpretation.

In recent decades, a substantial volume of work has examined the neural mechanisms of cognitive reappraisal. Distancing and reinterpretation are two frequently used tactics through which reappraisal can be implemented. Theoretical frameworks and prior evidence have suggested that the specific tactic through which one employs reappraisal entails differential neural and psychological mechanisms. Thus, we were motivated to assess the neural mechanisms of this distinction by examining the overlap and differentiation exhibited by the neural correlates of distancing (specifically via objective appra

Social Cognition and Social Inclusion in Young People With First-Episode Psychosis: A Brief Report.

AIM: First-episode psychosis (FEP) is a disabling illness associated with poor social inclusion, a critical determinant of mental health. Social cognitive impairment, a core feature of psychosis, may have implications for social inclusion. METHOD: This cross-sectional study investigated relationships between social inclusion and social cognition in 56 young people with FEP (aged 16-25, M = 20.4; SD = 2.8 years) receiving treatment at Orygen's Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre in Melbourne, Australia. Social inclusion was assessed alongside social cognition (domains including

Psychosocial status modifies the effect of maternal blood metal and metalloid concentrations on birth outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Metal exposure and psychosocial stress in pregnancy have each been associated with adverse birth outcomes, including preterm birth and low birth weight, but no study has examined the potential interaction between them. OBJECTIVES: We examined the modifying effect of psychosocial stress on the association between metals and birth outcomes among pregnant women in Puerto Rico Testsite for Exploring Contamination Threats (PROTECT) birth cohort study. METHODS: In our analysis of 682 women from the PROTECT study, we measured 16 essential and non-essential metals in blood samples at two

Modifying a negative interpretation bias for ambiguous social scenarios that depict the risk of rejection in women with anorexia nervosa.

BACKGROUND: A heightened sensitivity to social rejection might contribute towards the interpersonal difficulties and symptoms that characterise Anorexia Nervosa (AN). This paper examines the effect of Cognitive Bias Modification for Interpretation biases (CBM-I) training on a negative interpretation bias for ambiguous social scenarios that involve the risk of rejection and eating behaviour. METHOD: Women with AN received a single session of CBM-I training to develop a more benign interpretational style or a control condition (which included 50:50 negative and benign resolutions). To measure p

Problematic Peer Functioning in Girls with ADHD: A Systematic Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: Children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience many peer interaction problems and are at risk of peer rejection and victimisation. Although many studies have investigated problematic peer functioning in children with ADHD, this research has predominantly focused on boys and studies investigating girls are scant. Those studies that did examine girls, often used a male comparison sample, disregarding the inherent gender differences between girls and boys. Previous studies have highlighted this limitation and recommended the need for comparisons between ADHD f

Haptic perception of rod length when exploration is self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined.

Previous research has shown that when estimating accuracy of an object property like shape, haptic perception is better when exploration is active rather than passive. To further investigate this finding, participants estimated the length of a rod under differing exploration conditions: self-determined, other-determined, and self-other co-determined. During the self-determined exploration, participants moved their end of the rod while the experimenter held the other end of the rod stationary. During the other-determined exploration, the participant held the rod while the experimenter moved the

Physiological and Psychological Predictors of Functional Performance Related to Injury Risk in Female Athletes: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background and Objectives: Lower-extremity injuries are common among female athletes; however, their multifactorial predictors remain insufficiently understood. Given the interplay between physiological and psychological readiness in athletic performance, identifying the factors that influence lower limb performance is crucial for effective injury prevention. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive effects of physiological (VO2peak, anaerobic power, agility, and isokinetic strength) and psychological (resilience and self-efficacy) variables on functional performance related to risk of inju

Cognitive behavioural therapy for unusual experiences in children: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Over half of children in the general population report unusual or "psychotic-like" experiences (PLEs). The development of a later at-risk mental state is associated with persistent, distressing, PLEs, which are appraised negatively and hard to cope with. We have designed a novel, manualized, cognitive behavioural intervention for children aged 9 to 14 years, which aims to reduce emotional problems, improve coping and resilience, and help children manage PLEs, before an identifiable psychosis risk develops. We report on the feasibility, acceptability and clinical impact of the inter

The Effects of Political Misalignment With the Government on Individual Well-Being and Mental Health.

While psychological well-being and life satisfaction have been widely studied, the mental health effects of political events remain understudied. This paper examines how the ideological distance between individuals and their government affects well-being and mental health. We use 11 years of panel data from the SHARE survey across 21 European countries, merged with cabinet ideology data from ParlGov. A two-way fixed-effects model reveals that greater ideological distance negatively impacts life satisfaction and mental health, and, to a lesser extent, overall well-being, especially in polarized

Effects of self-selected music on psychophysiological responses to goal-directed exercise in Parkinson's disease.

Exercise is a cornerstone adjunct therapy for people with Parkinson's Disease (PwP) but tolerance is often impaired by non-motor processes including decreased motivation, psychological arousal, and physical effort allocation. Self-selected music (SSM) improves motivation and arousal state thereby enhancing physical effort and capacity during goal-directed exercise in healthy adults. Whether these effects translate to PwP is unclear. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of SSM on psychophysiological responses and goal-directed exercise performance during a 6-minute walk test (6M

The effect of time-of-day on short-term repetitive maximal performance, cognitive ability and psychological variables in adolescents.

Previous studies investigating the diurnal variation of physiological and psychological variables during exercise have yielded conflicting results. The present investigation was designed to assess the impact of time-of-day on short-term repetitive maximal performance [i.e., single and two consecutive bouts of 5m shuttle run test (5mSRT), long jump test] as well as cognitive ability and psychological variables [i.e., mood states (POMS) and Hooper questionnaire] in male and female adolescents. Effects of digital exercise therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy on body image and social distance of postoperative patients with breast cancer: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Modified radical mastectomy is a widely used operative method for patients with breast cancer. Although it can significantly improve the survival rate, it can also lead to various adverse reactions, such as the loss of sexual characteristics, skin damage, and hair loss, which in turn can cause body image disorders and social avoidance among postoperative patients. Exercise therapy and cognitive behavior therapy are frequently employed as rehabilitation treatments to increase the mental well-being and stress coping styles of patients with breast cancer. However, no studies have dire

Psychological factors and sex differences in acceptance of monovision.

49 participants, adapted to using contact lenses, completed a battery of psychological tests to examine differences between persons who were successful in wearing monovision lenses for presbyopia and those who were unsuccessful. Although visual performance and requirements strongly affect participants' satisfaction with monovision lenses, personality characteristics and visual processing styles appear to in fluence the percentage of full-time wear. Of the participants, 41% (20 of 49) ultimately rejected monovision for a variety of both visual and psychological reasons. Sex differences were evi

Autobiographical memory and psychological distress in a sample of upper-limb amputees.

Amputation is a traumatic and life-changing event that can take years to adjust to. The present study (a) examines psychological adjustment in a specific trauma-exposed sample, (b) compares the phenomenology (e.g., vividness) of amputation-related memories to more recent memories, and (c) tests whether memory phenomenology is associated with psychological distress. A total of 24 upper-limb amputees recalled two autobiographical memories--an amputation-related memory and a recent memory--and rated the phenomenological qualities of each memory, including Vividness, Coherence, Emotional Intensity

Online couple interventions in cancer.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Cancer diagnosis and treatment can have long-lasting psychological and physical consequences that affect both patients and their intimate partners. Improved understanding of extant dyadic interventions in the context of cancer, and how access to these may be enhanced through web-based technologies, introduce new directions for how cancer-related psychological distress for couples may be ameliorated. RECENT FINDINGS: Couples are negatively impacted by cancer, both individually, and as a dyad. Bolstering techniques to support effective communication about common cancer-relate

Predictors of Loneliness and Psychological Distress in Older Adults During the COVID-19 Pandemic: National Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly affected the mental health of older adults, particularly through increased loneliness and psychological distress. While various contributing factors have been studied, the role of preference for solitude as a potential predictor and mediator remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: This national cross-sectional study aimed to examine predictors of loneliness and psychological distress among older adults during the pandemic, with a specific focus on preference for solitude and its mediating role between pandemic-specific stressors and self-effic

Trails, traits, and mental states: Psychological differences between competitive and recreational sub-ultra and ultramarathon runners.

Psychological trait differences between ultrarunners (completing more than a standard 42.195 km marathon) and sub-ultrarunners (≤42.195 km) have been assumed, but not robustly examined. The current study investigated trait differences between competitive and recreational runners at sub-ultra and ultramarathon distances. Six hundred and eleven participants (334 recreational, 400 sub-ultrarunner) completed an online, anonymous survey assessing five traits: mental toughness (MT), grit, motivation, general self-efficacy (GSE), and personality. Bayesian ANOVAs indicated at least moderate evidence f
