Cardiovascular and electrodermal responses to support and provocation: interpersonal methods in the study of psychophysiological reactivity.

This study examined the joint and independent effects of experimentally manipulated social contexts and individual differences in hostility and perceived social support on physiological responses to a social stressor, while illustrating the use of the interpersonal circumplex for integrative social psychophysiological research. Undergraduate women completed a speech task in a supportive, neutral, or provoking context and completed measures of hostility and perceived social support. The provoking context evoked the largest blood pressure and heart rate (HR) responses, followed by the neutral an

Psychophysiologic sensitization to headlight glare among professional drivers with and without cardiovascular disease.

Previous studies have shown that young, healthy professional drivers show heightened central nervous system arousal and cardiovascular hyperreactivity to simulated headlight glare. Electroencephalographic and cardiovascular response and recovery to simulated headlight glare (the glare pressor test) were examined in 4 groups of male professional drivers (age 25-52 years)--12 with ischemic heart disease (IHD), 12 with hypertension (HTN), 10 with borderline hypertension (BHTN), and 34 who were healthy--and in 23 non-professional driver controls--with the aim of assessing sensitization to this nig

Psychophysiological reactions in methadone maintenance patients do not correlate with methadone plasma levels.

In methadone maintenance therapy methadone plasma concentrations of 400 ng/ml are necessary to suppress any further opiate action and to provide stabilized maintenance. In a controlled study we have searched for a differentiation in autonomous activation between patients having low and high methadone plasma levels, using static and dynamic pupillometry and habituation of skin conductance response. Results show that there is no difference in psychophysiological response between patients with high (greater than 400 ng/ml) or low (less than 400 ng/ml) plasma levels of methadone. This indicates th

A psychophysiological study in humans using phasic colonic distension as a noxious visceral stimulus.

Psychophysiological experiments were performed in 9 humans using constant-pressure, phasic, graded distention (30 sec, 20-70 mm Hg) of the sigmoid colon as a visceral stimulus. Reliable cardiovascular (pressor), respiratory and visceromotor responses in addition to reports of pressure/pain sensations were evoked by colonic distension in 8 of the 9 subjects. The pressure/pain sensations were referred to the lower abdomen, lower back and perineum and their intensity quantified using a visual analogue scale. Responses to colonic distension were graded and increased with repeated distensions at th

Clinical, psychophysiological, and neurological characteristics of volunteers with impaired smooth pursuit eye movements.

Two hundred eighty-five volunteers from a community college were screened on campus for accuracy of their smooth pursuit eye movements (SPEM) by electrooculograph (EOG). Those volunteers with the least and the most accurate SPEM were recalled to the laboratory for a comprehensive evaluation of clinical and demographic characteristics, family history, neurological status, and psychophysiological and biological measures, including SPEM [repeat EOG test and infrared (IR) test], an electroencephalogram, auditory and visual evoked potentials, reaction time (RT), the continuous performance task (CPT

Emotional fainting and the psychophysiologic response to blood and injury: autonomic mechanisms and coping strategies.

This experiment was designed to examine the psychophysiologic response pattern associated with emotional fainting. A survey was carried out among students, from which 30 volunteers who reported that they felt faint at the sight of blood or injury were recruited, together with 26 nonfainters. Blood pressure, heart rate, and respiration rate were monitored while subjects viewed a film depicting open-heart surgery and a neutral control film. Parasympathetic cardiac control was indexed by respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and coping was assessed by questionnaire. Responders (n = 17, group FPOS)

Self-control of psychophysiologic response to motion stress: using biofeedback to treat airsickness.

Investigators of the Neuropsychiatry Branch, Clinical Sciences Division, U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine (USAFSAM), provided biofeedback-moderated behavioral treatment to 53 fliers grounded for chronic, severe motion sickness, and followed each flier for 2 years after treatment completion. Success was defined as returning to and maintaining satisfactory operational flying status. Of these, 42 fliers (79%) met this criterion; 3 (6%) were partially successful, and 8 (15%) were subsequently grounded for recurrent airsickness. Follow-on studies will investigate psychophysiological mech

Effects of self-selected music on psychophysiological responses to goal-directed exercise in Parkinson's disease.

Exercise is a cornerstone adjunct therapy for people with Parkinson's Disease (PwP) but tolerance is often impaired by non-motor processes including decreased motivation, psychological arousal, and physical effort allocation. Self-selected music (SSM) improves motivation and arousal state thereby enhancing physical effort and capacity during goal-directed exercise in healthy adults. Whether these effects translate to PwP is unclear. The purpose of this study was to measure the effects of SSM on psychophysiological responses and goal-directed exercise performance during a 6-minute walk test (6M

Psychophysiological stress response to the Open TSST VR-Y in a youth sample: A feasibility study.

The Open TSST VR is a freely available virtual reality adaptation of the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) designed to enable standardized, adaptable, and scalable stress research. However, its feasibility as a stressor has only been validated in adult populations. Here, we present results from a study using the Open TSST VR for Youths (VR-Y), a version adapted to adolescent populations. We compared self-ratings, endocrine, and heart rate responses to the VR-Y stress condition and a placebo TSST (active control condition without social-evaluative threat). A total of 37 individuals aged 13-18 yea

The role of trust in psychophysiological adaptation during split-belt treadmill training: a multimodal study.

Trust is a key factor in motor learning, but its psychophysiological correlates remain poorly understood. This study examined how trust relates to neural, muscular, and behavioural adaptation during split-belt treadmill training. Twenty-five healthy adults (12 males, 13 females) underwent gait training with unilateral knee/ankle restrictions and weight-bearing. Electroencephalographic, electromyographic, and inertial signals, gait kinematics, and subjective trust were recorded. Variance decomposition characterised variability across signals, and multi-block partial least squares (MB-PLS) extra

Moderating effects of individual factors on the relationship between inflammation and psychophysiological states in healthy adults.

Systemic inflammation affects psychological processes. Although the association between inflammation and psychophysiological state has been extensively investigated in patients with depression or inflammatory disease, how this relationship manifests in healthy individuals is not clearly known. Not all individuals exhibit distress in response to elevated inflammatory markers, suggesting the presence of psychological moderators. Elucidating the effect of elevated inflammatory markers on healthy adults would broaden the understanding of the relationship between inflammation and psychophysiologica

A Comparative Analysis Between National-Level and Young Professional Road Cyclists: A Psychophysiological Approach.

INTRODUCTION: While physiological predictors like maximal oxygen uptake and lactate threshold are well established in cycling, psychological factors such as affective load and effort perception remain less studied. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to explore the possible differences in psychophysiological responses between professional and national-level cyclists during a race simulation. METHODS: Twenty-four male cyclists (12 professionals and 12 national level) matched for V˙O2max (75.2 [5.9] vs 74.3 [7.1] mL·min-1·kg-1) performed a 60-minute treadmill cycling test simulating race-end co

Sleep deprivation disrupts postural balance and sensorimotor integration: A combined psychophysiological-behavioral analysis.

BACKGROUND: Sleep is crucial for optimal sensorimotor integration, a fundamental process enabling coordinated motor responses to sensory inputs. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms through which acute sleep deprivation impairs this integration remain incompletely understood. This study investigates the impact of acute sleep deprivation on postural balance and elucidates the underlying multilayered mechanisms using a combination of behavioral, psychophysiological, and neuroimaging indicators. METHODS: Twenty-five healthy young participants underwent 36 h of total sleep deprivation. Befo

Psychophysiological and Dual-Task Effects of Biofeedback and Neurofeedback Interventions in Airforce Pilots: A Pilot Study.

(1) Background: Neurofeedback (NFB) and biofeedback (BFB) have been shown to reduce stress, enhance physiological self-regulation, improve cognitive performance, and accelerate response times. Stimulating the sensorimotor rhythm (12-15 Hz) is particularly effective in improving working memory and selective attention. However, most studies on air force pilots focus on addressing post-traumatic stress disorder rather than investigating how these interventions might enhance performance and safety during flights, as explored in the present study. (2) Methods: Twelve Spanish Air Force fighter pilot

Getting Better with Age? A Review of Psychophysiological Studies of Fear Extinction Learning Across Development.

A critical developmental task is learning what constitutes reliable threat and safety signals in the environment. In humans, atypical fear learning processes are implicated in many mental health conditions, particularly fear and anxiety disorders, pointing to the potential for laboratory measures of fear learning to facilitate early identification of at-risk individuals. This chapter reviews studies of fear learning and extinction learning that incorporate peripheral measures of psychophysiological response and include a developmental sample. Broadly, these studies indicate substantial consist

Effect of slow, deep breathing on visceral pain perception and its underlying psychophysiological mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: Studies using somatic pain models have shown the hypoalgesic effects of slow, deep breathing. We evaluated the effect of slow, deep breathing on visceral pain and explored putative mediating mechanisms including autonomic and emotional responses. METHODS: Fifty-seven healthy volunteers (36 females, mean age = 22.0 years) performed controlled, deep breathing at a slow frequency (6 breaths per minute), controlled breathing at a normal frequency (14 breaths per minute; active control), and uncontrolled breathing (no-treatment control) in randomized order. Moderate painful stimuli wer

Emotion and Psychophysiological Responses During Emotion-Eliciting Film Clips in an Eating Disorders Sample.

Background: Greater vulnerability to negative emotions appears associated with the development and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). A systematic review of psychophysiological studies using emotion-eliciting film clips reveals that there are no studies examining the effect of standardized validated film clips on psychophysiological response across a range of EDs. Methods: Using standardized validated film clips without ED-specific content, the present study examined self-reported emotions and psychophysiological responses of women with Binge-Eating Disorder (BED; n = 57), Anorexia Nervosa
