Who's at the Bottom of the Hiring List? Exploring the Compounding Effects of Applicant Race and Offense History on Employability.

Justice-involved persons, especially people of color and those convicted of a sexual offense, experience bias and other barriers when seeking employment. However, there is no research on the synergistic effects of race and sexual offense history on employment-related outcomes. This study examined whether a hypothetical job applicant's race (Black vs. White) and/or sexual offense history (sexual, non-sexual, or no history) impacted hiring decisions and employment-related outcomes. Results revealed no significant main effects of applicant race and no interaction between applicant race and offens

Epistaxis related to exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage in south African Thoroughbreds.

This study investigated if environmental factors had an effect on the incidence of epistaxis related to exercise-induced pulmonary haemorrhage (EIPH) among racehorses in southern Africa. Data covering the period 1986-2001 and involving 778 532 race runs were analysed. This included the following information: date of race, age, sex, name of breeder, trainer, distance, jockey, state of going, weight carried, racing centre and altitude. Veterinarians employed by the Jockey Club suspended officially entered horses that presented with epistaxis (frank bleeding from the nostrils) after racing. On-co

Managing existing pain: Predicting pain progression and improvement using machine learning approaches.

PURPOSE: Chronic pain (CP) is highly prevalent in the U.S. and imposes substantial health and economic burdens. Understanding which biopsychosocial and treatment-related factors drive pain progression and improvement is essential for developing targeted prevention strategies. METHODS: Using the 2019-2020 National Health Interview Survey Longitudinal Cohort data, we applied Random Forest machine learning algorithms with permutation-based feature importance to predict four one-year pain transitions: nonchronic-to-chronic pain progression, CP-to-high-impact chronic pain (HICP) progression, compl

Bullying Victimization and Mattering: An Analysis of Adolescent Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation.

Background/Objectives: Youth who experience bullying victimization often report lower mattering, the perception of being valued by others; yet this association remains underexplored across intersections of gender and sexual identities. Methods: Using Spring 2025 data from the Health and Peer Relations Study, we examined whether gender identity and sexual orientation moderated the association between bullying and mattering among Canadian youth in Grades 7-12 (N = 54,181; racially/ethnically diverse = 65.2%, sexually diverse = 14.8%, gender diverse = 3.5%), controlling for grade and race/ethnici

Associations of antidepressant medication consumption with changes in personality pathology and quality of life among community-dwelling adults.

BACKGROUND: Although antidepressant medication (ADM) has produced small advantages over pill placebo in randomized controlled trials, consuming ADM has predicted prospectively increasing depressive symptom severity in samples of community-dwelling adults. OBJECTIVE: We extended the community literature by testing ADM's relations to changes in personality and quality of life that may underpin depression. METHOD: In this longitudinal, observational study, community-dwelling adults (N = 601) were assessed twice, 8 months apart on average. Assessments included depressive symptoms, personality, l

Research on racial/ethnic inequities in oral health over the past 80 years: The role of racism.

AIM: This study aims to (1) describe trends in explanations provided for racial/ethnic inequities in dental caries and periodontitis, and (2) explore the patterns of relatedness among explanations for these inequities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Highly cited publications based on studies indexed in the Scopus database were retrieved and assessed for eligibility. Explanations for racial/ethnic inequities were classified into eight different, but interrelated domains. We assessed trends and examined the relations among explanations using multiple correspondence analysis. RESULTS: A total of 200 ar

Sluggish cognitive tempo in psychiatrically hospitalized children: factor structure and relations to internalizing symptoms, social problems, and observed behavioral dysregulation.

As research examining sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) advances, it is important to examine the structure and validity of SCT in a variety of samples, including samples of children who are clinically-distressed but not referred specifically for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study used a large sample of psychiatrically hospitalized children (N = 680; 73 % male; 66 % African American) between the ages of 6 and 12 to examine the latent structure of SCT, ADHD, oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), depression, and anxiety using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). C-reactive protein and substance use disorders in adolescence and early adulthood: a prospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Dysregulated immune function and elevated inflammation markers are seen in adults with chronic diseases, including some psychiatric disorders, but evidence on inflammation in the case of drug abuse is conflicting. OBJECTIVE: To test the concurrent and predictive relations between C-reactive protein (CRP) and use and abuse of alcohol, nicotine and cannabis in a longitudinal, population sample of adolescents and young adults, at the period of highest increase in drug use. METHODS: Data from the prospective population-based Great Smoky Mountains Study (N=1420) were used, covering ch

Analysis of the 50-mile ultramarathon distance using a predictive XGBoost model.

Although the 50-mile ultramarathon is one of the most common race distances, it has received little scientific attention. The objective of this study was to assess how an athlete's age group, sex, nationality, and the race location, affect race speed. Utilizing a dataset with ultramarathon races from 1863 to 2022, a machine learning model based on the XGBoost algorithm was developed to predict the race speed based on the aforementioned variables. Model explainability tools, including model features relative importances and prediction distribution plots were then used to investigate how each fe

Correlates of suicidal ideation and non-suicidal self-injury in a large community sample of children.

OBJECTIVE: Relatively little research has examined the correlates of suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in children. To address this gap, we sought to identify demographic, psychological and parent-related factors associated with increased SI and NSSI in this population. METHOD: Participants were 697 children (ages 7-11; 62.6% Non-Hispanic White; 51.9% boys) and their mothers recruited from the community. Information was collected regarding children's histories of SI and NSSI, demographics, children's and mothers' psychopathology, mothers' prior suicide attempt and par

The gendered violence of injecting-related stigma among relatively affluent, suburban women who inject drugs.

INTRODUCTION: In honouring the legacy of Jude Byrne's life-long advocacy for women and mothers who use drugs, this paper presents a case study of a group of women about whom we know little about and hear even less from: women who inject drugs in relatively affluent suburbs. METHODS: Based on a 2020 qualitative study of people who inject drugs in an affluent area of Sydney known as 'The Beaches', we use in-depth interview data to thematically explore the lived experiences of gendered stigma among women who inject drugs. RESULTS: Even when women occupy the 'ideal' social position in terms of c

Cognitive and affective predictors of smoking after a sentinel health event.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined how smoking-related causal attributions, perceived illness severity, and event-related emotions relate to both intentions to quit and subsequent smoking behavior after an acute medical problem (sentinel event). METHODS: Three hundred and seventy-five patients were enrolled from 10 emergency departments (EDs) across the USA and followed for six months. Two saturated, manifest structural equation models were performed: one predicting quit attempts and the other predicting seven-day point prevalence abstinence at 14 days, three months, and six months after the inde

Environmental and sociocultural factors are associated with pain-related brain structure among diverse individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain: intersectional considerations.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain including knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Previous research indicates ethnic-race groups differ in the pain and functional limitations experienced with knee OA. However, when socioenvironmental factors are included in analyses, group differences in pain and function wane. Pain-related brain structures are another area where ethnic-race group differences have been observed. Environmental and sociocultural factors e.g., income, education, experiences of discrimination, and social support influence brain structures. We investigate

Living with sickle cell disease: traversing 'race' and identity.

OBJECTIVES: Sickle cell disease (SCD) has a distinctive social history that continues to influence research and clinical practice related to the disease. Despite the historical link between SCD and concepts of 'race', there is limited empirical information on the relationships among SCD patients' 'race'/ancestry/ethnicity/nationality, their beliefs and attitudes associated with these identities, and their SCD experiences and outcomes. We conducted a preliminary study to explore some of these relationships. DESIGN: This US-based study comprised 46 adults with SCD, 20 males and 26 females, with
