The future of barium radiology.

Barium radiology of the gastrointestinal tract has had a long history but its survival into the next century will be a challenge. The numbers of barium studies performed has declined in recent decades due to several factors; also, health care reforms in the United States will further impact on the use of barium examinations. The future status of these radiological procedures will change depending on these factors and the organ system being examined; an increased emphasis on functional evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract will also have an effect on the evolving role of barium radiology. Natural Language Processing to Improve Vertebral Fracture Identification in Older Adults Receiving Osteoporosis Therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral fracture identification using administrative codes is challenging because diagnoses often occur outside hospital and orthopedic care settings. Outpatient diagnoses improve capture but increase misclassification. Accurate methods are important for population-level research and care. OBJECTIVE: To develop an accurate natural language processing (NLP) algorithm to apply to radiology reports for vertebral fractures. METHODS: Adult members of an integrated health care delivery system who were aged 50-89 years at bisphosphonate initiation (1998-2019) and members 3 years lat

Development of educational modules for MRTs to better support patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities undergoing imaging procedures: A collaborative patient-oriented initiative.

BACKGROUND: Patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience increased anxiety when undergoing medical imaging procedures for a variety of reasons including sensory overload, comprehension difficulty, and meeting unfamiliar people. There are several strategies that medical radiation technologists (MRTs) can apply to improve the imaging process. The purpose of this project was to work together with patients to develop educational modules and resources for MRTs on how to best support patients with IDD during medical imaging procedures. DEVELOPMENT PROCESS AND FINDINGS:

Prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection in German radiologists.

Healthcare workers have an increased risk of tuberculosis infection compared with the general population. There have been few attempts to quantify the prevalence of latent tuberculosis infection amongst German healthcare workers, due to inadequacy of the current tuberculin skin test (TST). Therefore, it was our aim to investigate the prevalence of latent tuberculosis in this cohort using a tuberculosis-specific ELISpot (T-SPOT.TB) test and to compare the performance of this test to that of the TST. Ninety-five healthy participants working in departments of radiology were examined by ELISpot, l

Virtual colonoscopy training and accreditation: a national survey of radiologist experience and attitudes in the UK.

AIM: Expert consensus recommends directed training and possibly in the future, formal accreditation before independent virtual colonoscopy (VC) reporting. We surveyed radiologists' experience of VC training, compared with barium enema, and assessed attitudes towards accreditation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was sent to 78 consultant radiologists from 72 centres (65 National Health Service hospitals; seven independent primary screening centres) offering a VC service. RESULTS: Fifty-four (69%) eligible radiologists responded. They had interpreted 18,152 examinations (range 3-1500)

Malpractice litigation involving patients with carcinoma of the breast.

BACKGROUND: We sought to evaluate recent trends in the United States of America regarding malpractice awards for patients with carcinoma of the breast. STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective review was performed of 118 cases of purported malpractice in the diagnosis and management of patients with carcinoma of the breast and related problems. The information was tabulated from Westlaw Transmission, a computerized database. RESULTS: Gynecologists were the specialists most often sued and accounted for 47 percent of the physicians involved in lawsuits. Radiologists were cited in only 13 percent of the c

The National Alliance for Radiation Readiness (NARR): Driving Partnerships Within the Radiation Readiness Workforce.

Radiological incidents are rare, but can have significant public health consequences. Coordination across jurisdictions, government agencies, and different fields is critical to ensure an effective response that minimizes health impacts. State and local government agencies face challenges in responding to radiological incidents such as constrained resources, siloed communications, and gaps in workforce training and capacity. The National Alliance for Radiation Readiness (NARR) is a network of experts composed of 20 member organizations and 10 federal partners. The NARR seeks to advance the nat

Developing and Implementing a Standardized Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory Orientation Program: Improving Staff Preparedness.

The cardiac catheterization laboratory (CCL) is a highly specialized procedural environment that requires an effective orientation process for nurses and radiology technologists. Leaders at a health care network identified the need for a standardized CCL orientation program when high turnover rates and staff shortages created a need to hire nurses and radiology technologists with no CCL work history. A group of CCL leaders and perioperative educators collaborated to create and implement a network-wide CCL orientation program. The program is an instructor-led course conducted over three eight-h

Enhancing the use of computed tomography and cardiac catheterization angiography in Zambia: A project report on a global extension of medical technology in Japan.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is one of the leading causes of death in adults in Zambia among the non-communicable diseases. The Government of the Republic of Zambia through the Ministry of Health procured Japanese radiological systems, computed tomography, and angiography for the University Teaching Hospitals (UTHs) - Adult in 2015. However, the operation of these diagnostic systems has not been optimal due to lack of a proper maintenance service plan, lack of competent health professionals, and erratic supply of medical consumables. In this study, we report our experiences of providing intens

Overview of task shifting guidelines in Japan: from radiologists to radiological technologists.

As one of the key pillars of work style reform for physicians, task shifting and sharing from radiologists to radiological technologists has been considered. In May 2021, the Radiological Technologists Act was amended, allowing for the expansion of several duties. Alongside these legal and regulatory changes, a notice from Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare was issued, highlighting tasks to be particularly promoted under the current system prior to the amendment of the Radiological Technologists Act. These amendments authorize radiological technologists to perform advanced and specialized

Occupational Protection in Interventional Radiology. A Joint Guideline of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe and the Society of Interventional Radiology.

PURPOSE: Since the initial edition of this Guideline was published in 2010, it has become increasingly clear that occupational protection involves more than just radiation protection. Additionally, radiation exposure to operators and staff occurs from sources other than fluoroscopy. This Guideline has been updated to incorporate these topics and to reflect new information on occupational protection in interventional radiology. METHODS: The CIRSE Standards of Practice Committee, in conjunction with SIR, established a writing panel of twelve clinicians, medical physics experts, and others with

VI-RADS quality score: development and proposal of a scoring system by the American College of Radiology VI-RADS Steering Committee.

High-quality bladder MRI is essential for reliable detection and characterization of bladder tumors. While the Vesical Imaging Reporting and Data System (VI-RADS) was developed to standardize acquisition, interpretation, and reporting of MRI for bladder cancer staging, no universal scoring system has been established for quality assessment. A systematic review showed that existing efforts for bladder MRI quality assessment have largely relied on study-specific, subjective Likert-type scales, with substantial variability, hindering reproducibility and comparability across studies and institutio

Improving Abnormality Detection on Chest Radiography Using Game-Like Reinforcement Mechanics.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Despite their increasing prevalence, online textbooks, question banks, and digital references focus primarily on explicit knowledge. Implicit skills such as abnormality detection require repeated practice on clinical service and have few digital substitutes. Using mechanics traditionally deployed in video games such as clearly defined goals, rapid-fire levels, and narrow time constraints may be an effective way to teach implicit skills. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We created a freely available, online module to evaluate the ability of individuals to differentiate between

Diagnostic ultrasound at MACH 20: retroperitoneal and pelvic imaging in space.

An operationally available diagnostic imaging capability augments spaceflight medical support by facilitating the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of medical or surgical conditions, by improving medical outcomes and, thereby, by lowering medical mission impacts and the probability of crew evacuation due to medical causes. Microgravity-related physiological changes occurring during spaceflight can affect the genitourinary system and potentially cause conditions such as urinary retention or nephrolithiasis for which ultrasonography (U/S) would be a useful diagnostic tool. This study describes
