Radiologists’ Performance at Reduced Recall Rates in Mammography: A Laboratory Study.

Rationale and objectives: Target recall rates are often used as a performance indicator in mammography screening programs with the intention … informed consent was obtained from each participating radiologist. Five experienced breast imaging radiologists read a single test set of 200 mammographic cases (20 abnormal and 180 normal). The radiologists were asked to identify each case that they required to be recalled in three different recall conditions; free recall, 15% and 10% and mark the location o …

Intrauterine Linear Echogenicities in the Gravid Uterus: What Radiologists Should Know.

Intrauterine linear echogenicity (ILE) is a common ultrasonographic finding in the gravid uterus and has variable causes and variable maternal and fetal outcomes. Correctly categorizing ILE during pregnancy is crucial for guiding surveillance and advanced imaging strategies. Common causes of ILE include membranes in multiple gestations, uterine synechiae with amniotic sheets, and uterine duplication anomalies. Less common causes include circumvallate placenta, chorioamniotic separation, and hemorrhage between membranes. Amniotic band syndrome is a rare but important diagnosis to consider, as i

A Practical Approach to Supratentorial Brain Malformations: What Radiologists Should Know.

For general radiologists, congenital brain malformations pose substantial challenges in terms of recognition, description, and classification. This review describes a practical approach to imaging and classifying the most common supratentorial brain malformations. It begins with a discussion of embryology and optimal imaging technique and then summarizes distinguishing imaging features for several major categories of cerebral malformation, including holoprosencephaly, gray matter heterotopia, lissencephaly/pachygyria, focal cortical dysplasia, polymicrogyria, and cobblestone malformation. The …

Setting up a Nuchal Translucency Clinic: What Radiologists Need to Know.

The purpose of this article was to discuss the process of setting up a nuchal translucency (NT) screening clinic in clinical practice, how to interpret the information in combination with other clinical tests, what to do if abnormal results are obtained, and to illustrate some of the fetal anomalies that are associated with an increased NT. The NT was initially implemented to predict the likelihood of a fetus with Down syndrome. Maternal age can be combined with fetal NT and maternal serum biochemistry (free β-hCG and PAPP-A) at 11 to 14 weeks to identify about 90% of affected fetuses. Setting

Complications of fibrotic interstitial lung disease for the general radiologist.

Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a heterogeneous group of conditions characterised by non-infective inflammation and scarring of the lung parenchyma. They are not infrequently encountered by the general radiologist in both acute and outpatient reporting settings who may even be the first to make the diagnosis. In the acute setting, patients with ILD can present with respiratory deterioration due to a number of causes and in addition to the common causes of dyspnoea, an acute exacerbation of ILD needs to be considered. An exacerbation can be initiated by common triggers such as infection,

[Interstitial lung abnormalities : What the radiologist needs to know].

Interstitial lung abnormalities (ILA) are incidental findings on computed tomography (CT), particularly in elderly patients and smokers. They describe mild interstitial abnormalities that can be progressive and turn into overt interstitial lung disease (ILD). In recent years, ILA have increasingly come into focus because several large cohort studies have shown poorer clinical outcomes and increased mortality for patients with ILA compared to those without ILA. The radiological classification into nonsubpleural, subpleural nonfibrotic and subpleural fibrotic as well as the assessment over time
