Dose distribution around intracavitary applicators (Stockholm technique) has been investigated. The gradient of dose around the combination of intrauterine and vaginal applicators used is steep. The position of the uterus with and without the radium applicators inserted varies. Together with the steep dose gradient this implies that external irradiation following intracavitary treatment involves a risk for overdosage to tissues in the vicinity of the uterus and underdosage to the parametrium.

Between 1959 and 1975, 256 patients with pathologic Stage I uterine adenocarcinoma were treated at Stanford University Hospital, Stanford, California. Conventional radon chambers vent radon produced by the radium source during non-replenishment periods, raising environmental concerns, while slow replenishment limits operational efficiency. A 14 year old girl presented in 1986 with a huge perineal swelling which was progressively increasing in size and associated with loss of weight and loss of appetite. Biopsy from the mass revealed rhabdomyosarcoma of the vulva. She was treated with chemotherapy and radium implant. She responded well to the regime. Fibrosis of the vulva and vagina caused difficulty in consummation. Once it was corrected, she conceived easily and proceeded to a normal pregnancy and delivery.

Melanonychia is a black, tan, or brown streak within the nail plate subsequent to activation of melanocytes in the nail matrix. We present a case of a Haitian girl who presented with transverse melanonychia involving all 10 fingernails in the setting of hyperthyroidism and acute liver injury. Melanonychia has been described only one time in the literature in the setting of hyperthyroidism though this patient also underwent radium treatment which could have led to nail changes.

The analysis of 770 patients after irradiation of cervix-carcinoma from 1968 to 1976 with Cobalt 60, radium or operation or only irradiation therapy shows five-year survival rates of 78% for stage I, 61% for stage II, and 23% for stage III. Bowel reaction was seen in 27%, 4% developed stenoses, 1.3% a recto-vaginal fistula. A complication of the bladder was seen in 18%, 2.7% had an ureteral stricture and 0.8% a bladder-fistula.
