Navigating Bias on Medical Cannabis.

Cannabis has long been associated with recreational drug use, countercultural movements, criminal activity, and stigma. Conversely, growing evidence supports that medical cannabis can help with management of chronic pain and treatment-related symptoms. As medical cannabis becomes more widely accepted in healthcare, Christian nurses must navigate tensions between personal values and beliefs, biblical perspectives, cultural norms, laws, and institutional policies about cannabis as they offer holistic compassionate care for patients who use medical cannabis.

Incidents with recreational nitrous oxide use before and after legislation: poisonings and police incidents in the Netherlands between 2020 and 2025.

OBJECTIVE: In the Netherlands, a legislative amendment announced on December 9th 2019, banned the production, sale, purchase, and possession of nitrous oxide (N₂O) for recreational use, and became effective January 1st 2023. This study examined the impact of this policy change on the number of nitrous oxide-related health and police incidents. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective analysis of nitrous oxide-related incidents between 2020 and 2025 (up to September), including exposures reported to the Dutch Poisons Information Center and incidents recorded by the Netherlands Police. Interrupted

On the rise or a return to pre-pandemic levels? A cross-sectional online survey on nicotine, alcohol, and illicit drug use among youth.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic has had unprecedented and deteriorating effects on the mental health of adolescents and young adults. Various studies have described changes regarding substance abuse, but findings are conflicting. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey on nicotine, alcohol, and illicit drug use. METHODS: From March to May 2023, 502 participants aged 14-24 from a community-based sample completed the questionnaire. RESULTS: We found a general trend of declining or stable substance use during the first 2 years of the pandemic; however, in the third year (i

Pop goes the O2: a case of popper-induced methaemoglobinamia.

A 39-year-old man presented to the emergency department after falling downstairs after he consumed a large quantity of alcohol. On examination, he had altered mental state (GCS 14), central cyanosis and low oxygen saturation of 86%, despite 100% oxygen being administered. His arterial blood gas confirmed diagnosis of methaemoglobinaemia with a methaemoglobin percentage of 14.08. He was treated successfully with methylthioninium chloride. The patient later admitted to use of recreational poppers (amyl nitrates) the previous evening. The emergency physician is challenged by the presentation of a

Multiple Drug-Toxicity Involving Novel Psychoactive Substances, 3-Fluorophenmetrazine and U-47700.

3-Fluorophenmetrazine (3-FPM) is a stimulant-like novel psychoactive substance (NPS) and fluorinated analog of phenmetrazine that has recently appeared on the recreational drug market, with limited published information. Likewise, the synthetic opioid U-47700 has gained popularity among recreational drug users and is frequently detected in postmortem casework. We present the case history, autopsy and toxicological findings of a fatality involving the designer drugs 3-FPM and U-47700 for the first time in the literature. Adverse drug effects as a deterrent against willingness to use in the future among nightclub/festival attendees.

INTRODUCTION: It is largely unknown whether adverse effects experienced from recreational drug use affect willingness to use again. This study determined whether adverse effects from select party drugs affect reported willingness to use again in the next month among a high-risk population-people who attend electronic dance music parties at nightclubs or dance festivals. METHODS: Adults (age ≥ 18) entering nightclubs/festivals were surveyed in New York City in 2018-2022 (n = 2981). Participants were asked about past-month use of common party drugs (cocaine, ecstasy, lysergic acid diethylamide

Recreational substance use and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: differential effects of alcohol and THC.

Objective: The use of recreational drugs such as alcohol and tetrahydrocannabinol(THC) is increasing worldwide. While tobacco and certain illicit substances are well-established risk factors for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH), the role of alcohol and THC remains less well defined. Understanding their potential impact on aneurysm rupture and clinical severity could have significant implications for prevention and patient management. This study aimed to investigate the influence of alcohol and THC use on the risk of intracranial aneurysm(IA) rupture and the clinical severity of aSAH.

A selected bibliography on the drug use(r) "career".

This paper provides a brief discussion of the issues in examining "heavy" drug use in terms of a "career." This is an old paradigm in drug user research, and one that has produced some of the richest descriptions in the literature. It draws on the analytic approach developed to study other criminal activity in terms of "criminal careers" as well as the literature describing the variety of career "patterns" for substance users. Research into drug user careers is focused on the most serious, chronic substance users and examines the predictors of transition from lower level involvement to higher

SODAS: Surveillance of Drugs of Abuse Study.

OBJECTIVE: Novel psychoactive substance (NPS) as a form of recreational drug use has become increasingly popular. There is a paucity of information with regard to the prevalence and clinical sequelae of these drugs. The aim of this study was to detect NPS in patients presenting to the emergency department with suspected toxicological ingestion. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The prospective study was performed in a large emergency department in the UK. During a 3-month period 80 patients were identified by clinicians as having potentially ingested a toxicological agent. Urine samples were analysed usi

Adults with a history of recreational cannabis use have altered speech production.

Stereotypical depictions of speech in cannabis users often suggest slow, laboured output, yet objective evidence supporting this assumption is extremely limited. We know that depressants or hallucinogenic drugs such as cannabis can cause acute changes in communication and speech rate, but the long-lasting effects of cannabis use on speech are not well described. The aim of this study was to investigate speech in individuals with a history of recreational cannabis use compared to non-drug-using healthy controls. Speech samples were collected from a carefully described cohort of 31 adults with a

Neurological complications of drug abuse: pathophysiological mechanisms.

Drug abuse is associated with a variety of neurological complications. The use of certain recreational drugs shows a marked temporal association with the onset of both haemorrhagic and ischaemic strokes, the majority of which develop within minutes to 1 h after the administration of the index drug. Delayed onset of stroke has also been observed. Acute, severe elevation of blood pressure, cardiac dysrhythmias, cerebral vasospasm, vasculitis, embolization due to infective endocarditis or dilated cardiomyopathy, embolization due to foreign material injected with the diluents under non-sterile con

Oxycodone abuse in New York City: characteristics of intravenous and intranasal users.

This pilot study sought to characterize typical nonmedical oxycodone use in the New York Metropolitan area. Accordingly, a clinical interview was administered to 25 intranasal (IN) and 25 intravenous (IV) oxycodone abusers to capture demographics and patterns of use within the region. IN and IV abusers shared a number of similar characteristics including age, proportion of men and women, criminal history, drug use history, and current recreational drug use. However, the two populations also differed in a number of aspects. IV oxycodone users had lower rates of employment, earlier onset of illi

Evaluating the Abuse Potential of Lenabasum, a Selective Cannabinoid Receptor 2 Agonist.

Endocannabinoids, which are present throughout the central nervous system (CNS), can activate cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1 and CB2). CB1 and CB2 agonists exhibit broad anti-inflammatory properties, suggesting their potential to treat inflammatory diseases. However, careful evaluation of abuse potential is necessary. This study evaluated the abuse potential of lenabasum, a selective CB2 receptor agonist in participants (n = 56) endorsing recreational cannabis use. Three doses of lenabasum (20, 60, and 120 mg) were compared with placebo and nabilone (3 and 6 mg). The primary endpoint was t

Recreational drugs: relationship to AIDS.

Current data suggest that a transmissible agent causes AIDS, but undefined cofactors may also play a role. This paper reviews published data on the relationship between recreational drugs and immune alterations, with particular emphasis on nitrite inhalant (NI) use by homosexual men. In our original cohort of 15 homosexual men, helper:suppressor (H:S) T-cell ratios are stable, but persistently lower in the NI users. A recent analysis of 245 homosexual men shows that NI use is associated with low H:S ratios in homosexual men in Washington, D.C., but not in New York. Although NI use could increa

[Thromboembolisms due to recreational use of nitrous oxide].

Nitrous oxide (N2O) is increasingly used as a recreational drug, and is presumed relatively safe and innocent. The risks for neurological complications are often known, however the risks of serious thromboembolic events are not. We describe three cases of acute thromboembolic events resulting in serious cardiovascular complications after N2O abuse: one case of myocardial infarction that resulted in a reduced ejection fraction, one case of peripheral arterial occlusion that led to limb amputation and one case of pulmonary embolism that resulted in hemodynamic instability requiring extracorporea
